Hey Team!

I am involved with a project that is taking out my familiar and comfort zone as well as away from my family once in a while. I'm hanging with a lot of people who are fit but yet seem to eat on the run and whatever they want. I am trying to stick to my good eating, but the take out and catered meals (I'm involved with a production company and am being treated very nicely) are killing me. I found a gym, but having a hard time sticking to good eating in the hotel and on the job with unlimited food (chips, pretzels and everything else bad...), sodas and the like around. It's a junk food junkie's heaven...I hate this! Do I pack a backpack of nuts, tuna and shakes and look like a Richard Simmons junkie?

Help me out here please!

Thank, Dave

We all still have learning to do, unless we'd all be our ideal weight... Weight maintenance is the second half of this journey. Hard as hell until it clicks.

You're normal; very normal. Chances are that you've splurged on sodium treats and some of that weight is water retention. Just a gut feeling.

Keep going and realize next time when you've got that "feeling to eat!".

Don't forget the muslces in the arms and upper body & abdomen that are recruited during an actual road bike ride. Keeping balance, anticipation or turns/bumps, centrifigal force and the like all contribute to different muscle contractions during your ride as opposed to a totally stationary bike.

Mike, I was where you're at now. In the beginning, I did have my emotional ups & downs. Why? Because when we embark on something new, we always tend to put all our eggs in one basket and pressure ourselves with all or nothing. This is a huge change in your life.

I did the following:

Cut the calories...no getting around that.

Concentrate on eating clean (cut out the crap food; this is the hardest)

Journal...period (how do you know where you're going unless you know where' you've been?)

Hit the weights and cardio (I do a 60/40 balance) and try to lift first.

This will take over a year to lose weight, but if the number is the only thing that matters to you, then you WILL get discouraged. Remind yourself that from now on...you'll be healthier and work out diligently.

Wash on...wash off my friend.

Message me and let's team up! I am at 285 and still have about 85 to go.

If I feel it in the head only (sore throat, mild sinus congestion), I'm off to the gym. If it's in the lungs or below the neck, I'll just hang out at home and do situps or whatever.

I HAVE notice though that since I've been working out, my immune system is on overdrive. My wife's has been through pink eye and a horrible cold recently due to her teaching/exposure to kids. I just take mega Vitamin c, drink loads of water and wash hands and face every few hours....Don't know if it helps, but it seems to.

My son wanted a Wii for the longest time, now that he's played his friend's a few times, he doesn't want it. Is it really as good as people thought?

Reading all of these posts, I'd like to start "working out" at home...if it's worth the investment.

Try to be objective. He said something about the controllers not working right...Can I play against the computer if nobody wants to play with me?

Thanks! Dave

Tom, I have that same dilemma. I don't believe that our scales are the most accurate method to finding true BF%.

I am currently 32% and 280lbs (~90lbs. fat) . This would mean that at my goal of 190, I would be around zero% fat. Impossible to say the least.

I am learning to stay away from the scale and closer to my nicer fitting and more forgiving clothing... If you find anything else out, kindly message me.

Keep up the great work!

"If somebody invades your home, it's you or them, so make it so there is only one side to the story..."

*This is not intended to start a political thread*

Q: Are some martial arts schools forgiving for people that have bad backs, heel spurs etc. ?? I'd like to start but always thought of these schools as very strict (I took karate as a youngster in the 70's and was very intimidated by the teacher who pushed and tripped me to toughen me) and rugged with "no excuses" thinking. Am I wrong?

Hi Brenda and welcome!

First off, these are basics that I'm sure you're already doing, so please don't get intimidated by this post...

By looking at your profile, I see the weight that you need to lose. Without knowing any medical conditions or medications/restrictions (hopefully none, but that's OK) I'd say eat 4-6 times a day spreading and grazing throughout the day. [i]Maintain your calories as too much of a deficit will stall your metabolism.

I'd recommend cutting out ALL:

Regined sugar

High Fructose Corn Syrup & all other disguised insulin inducing sweeteners.

Soda of ANY kind (including diet)

Fruit Juices

Simple carbs like those found in crackers, cookies and white breads.

Red meat & shell fish

Most things out of a box or package (wheat thins, triscuits, etc.)

Adding as much as you want (within reason) of

Activity (walking with light weights), aqua fit...

Something at least 30 mintes 4-5 times a week.

complex carbs (green veggies)

Fish (mahi mahi, tilapia, flounder)

Chicken breast

Whole grain products

Steel cut oats (complex carbs) for breakfast

Water (at least 1/2 gallon to one a day) - you should be eliminating water at least every hour or so...this helps get rid of metabolised fat and to keep your metabolism revving.

Go easy but try to add in:

Raw unsalted nuts (medium handful a day should be plenty; almonds and walnuts are my favorites)

Natural unsalted peanut butter

Olive Oil

Garlic

Some fruits like apples and oranges when/if you crave sweets in cottage cheese (casein/slow burning protein) which will keep you full.

Stretching throughout the day to start becoming flexible.

I'd recommend some of these yoga books. Especially "Yoga For Wimps".

Feel free to message me...I've been almost where you are and it is a wonderful world once you get going (like you've already done) and see results. Keep at it and most of all read the labels if this is a new step for you. Marketers will suck you in without shame.
Phone system question
Off-Topic & General Chat
Posted: February 23, 2007
Seeing that there are a lot of smart people here...I thought I'd ask a telephone wiring question. Talk about <off topic>!

I have a new Brinks system in the house in the master bedroom. The people that used to live here had an outdated system in the laundry room that still has the battery and connection to the phone system. Phone went dead a few weeks ago and I've been going back and forth with Brinks and Bellstouth as they point the finger at each other. I'm trying to avoid them coming out and NO I didn't purchase the extended warranty service on the home...don't remind me!

Q: If I totally disconnect and cut the old phone wire from the older system, should this restore the phone service within the house? As I move the old panel around, I hear static and more white noise so I am assuming that something shorted or got loose on the old panel...

Just exchanged my 44 pants for a 42. After that, I stopped at WalMart and picked up a new copy of Back in Black, The Cars and Def Leopards greatest hits... Yes an 80's nerd & lovin' it!

Anybody see the Hugh and Drew movie "Music and Lyrics"...?

Some great NLP memories there (thin ties, side dancing...) Boring movie (IMHO) overall, but I related to the music and fashion....
