Increasing my stamina
Exercise & Training Tips |
I'd probably do about ten circles around the football field, sprinting the length of the field, jogging to the other side, sprinting back, jogging, etc. Start and end with a mile warm up and cool down, though. Something nice and easy like a 10m/mile pace.

Bour, I'm aiming to meet criteria A, so the ultra-distance stuff is not relevant. The 8% is a measurement given to be awarded "elite" status from the USAT officials, and sprint triathlons apply. So it isn't really crazy. I'm into practical exercise and just becoming a capable person; in a triathlon, in particular, the transition from bike to run is my favorite part because it's a very legitimate workout. I like people that do parkour (the discipline, not freerunning the skate punk b.s.) and martial arts forms and boxing, because those seem practical too.
It seems, too, that all those disciplines give a cut, defined form without looking like a painted skeleton (ultra-running) or a questionably roided appearance. What are the benefits of Zinc and Magnesium? After pretty much every workout, I take down 3 tbsp of brewer's yeast which has PLENTY of every B vitamin, but I don't particularly aim to get the other two. I do try to avoid supplementation and prefer to look up foods with the nutrients and eat them instead. EDIT: For reference, I think this means my targets are Swim: 1m20s/100y Bike: 24m/hour Run: sub-19 5k ...put together (that's the trick) |

Hm. It didn't give me such a negative impression, maybe because I'm negative and competitive anyway. It just kinda made me think, ok if you're going to do it, then do it, but it's hard. And it was hard to do, and I made a lot of mistakes on my way down.
But I win. |

The Olympics pump me up!!
Motivation Tips |
Regardless of why it's there, typically more growth and weight have been added on to a 16-year old than a 14-year old, so gymnastics moves are harder to perform. The argument is, of course a 14-year old can do it, look at what little mass she has to throw around.
That's the rule, and that's the argument, anyway. |

Importance of Meal Planning?
Diet & Nutrition Tips |
I try to plan my meals for saving money, not wasting food (watching expiration dates and produce, planning accordingly), keeping something of an eye on nutrient levels, and avoiding having to eat something simple and less healthy to 'tide me over' while I'm preparing a proper meal.

I've had about fifteen kidney stones in my life, and I've felt some discomfort under my ribs in the back a couple times the past few days. I'm trying to space out the protein better and eat more vegetable and fruit carbs.
Bourblaster, are you still tearing up the coffee? What is your sleep like? Presumably, you go through coffee like alcohol, and it has less of an effect than it would on ... less-than bodybuilders. |

How do your dentists feel about your oral care? What do they recommend?
Personally, I brush twice every day, and floss about once a YEAR unless I've got some fiber or sinew stuck in my teeth. Every time I see the dentist, he applauds my "excellent home care," and I've never had a cavity. EDIT: And I use a manual brush. |

Soreness after stretches and kicks
Martial Arts |
Quoting: Servinghim Massage (once every 2-3 weeks is great if you can afford it). I agree with this. A nice leg shave and some lotion is good times and free. Plus you get to avoid massage therapists, who are typically mystified by weird things and take such approaches to wellness. Avoid baths filled with green tea, essence of lavendar, and rose petals. Just take care of yourself. Ice baths are great, too, if you can stomach them. And good luck on the test! Brown belt is where I left off as a youth.... I will pick it up again some day, if for nothing else, then for flexibility. I remember doing some insane splits and things that I couldn't dream of doing now. |

So here's my goal then:
At least one of the following three criteria: CRITERIA A: Finish top-eight overall and within 8 percent of the overall winner's time, according to gender, in at least three (3) USAT sanctioned events that occurred within the past 12 months and had at least 500 participants. No exceptions will be made. CRITERIA B: Finish within 8 percent of the overall winner's time in at least two (2) ultra- distance events that included an elite field (offering $5k or greater in prize purse) that occurred within the past 12 months and had at least 500 participants. Ultra distance is defined as any distance equal to or greater than a 4K swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run. Events must have been sanctioned by USA Triathlon. No exceptions will be made. CRITERIA C: Finish within 8 percent of the overall winner's time in one (1) ultra-distance event that included an elite field (offering $5k or greater in prize purse) that occurred within the past 12 months and had at least 500 participants AND finish top-eight and within 8 percent of the overall winner's time, according to gender, in at least one (1) USAT sanctioned event that occurred within the past 12 months and had at least 500 participants. Gotta work on my cycling. |

I believe in tweaks. I'm not set in my ways; in fact, my post was asking a question, whether the rate of growth is the same for a bodybuilder or a beginner. Actually, it would make sense to think a bodybuilder would have diminishing returns.
I'm trying it out, for what it's worth. Just fruit and vegetable carbs, a ton of tuna and sardines (I still won't go overboard with crap like steak and bacon), nuts, dairy. I ran seven miles Sunday night with two tempo intervals and actually performed better, but I guess I'll see why over time. Quoting: Bourblaster If all that mess still works for you when you are performing in an elite category, I'll promptly shut the fuck up. Until then, I'll just keep talking. Give me a year. |

The powerlifters still have the same rate of growth, though. It isn't like you're gaining 1 lb. of muscle per week and consuming 1g/lb of body weight every day until you can bench 300, then you're gaining 3 lbs of muscle every week, right? The same rate of growth would seem to require the same consumption of protein.
There are lots of things that Bourblaster finds to be terrible ideas that I survive quite well through. I do long distance cardio up to three times a week with my training, I eat around .4g protein/lb of body weight, and I eat a lot of carbs. But I have lost inches, lost body fat percentage, and gained some weight, according to various tests. |

Quoting: Servinghim I dont use straps and never have. My hands aren't the 'softest' because of it, but I laugh when I see guys strapping up just to do pullups... its ur own body weight...learn to hold urself up. You were doing pull-ups all throughout life, huh? I need to see some studies that show the human body can use anywhere near 300g of protein, or that it didn't hurt kidneys to consume that much protein, or that it's beneficial to consume THAT much. That can't be necessary. |

Cool, thanks for all this. My lifestyle is very different, looking at 7 and 8. I might give 7 a try after my August 30 triathlon. I don't really want to get fancy leading into it.
EDIT: Our goals are very different, but I think with a very high intake of natural foods (meats, fruits, egg-whites, vegetables), I can achieve my needs and follow 7. |

What's With Japan and Losing Fat?
Off-Topic & General Chat |
It recently became illegal for men to have a pants size over 32 or 33 inches in Japan, I believe. I'm not sure what those proportions indicate for an average American male, but I think most guys over here would be forking up some heavy taxes.

Having trouble filling daily calorie target
Diet & Nutrition Tips |
James, you were seriously talking about the exact same workout period? What useless information. It's like discouraging weightlifting because you can't do that and eat at the same time.
I'm inclined to think Bourblaster inferred correctly. However, I haven't specifically tailored my lifestyle so that muscle can be built at the same time as weight lost. I'm either building muscle mass and weight or losing weight that probably includes muscle. |

Sweat Like a Man
Exercise & Training Tips |
I think the sweatband is the best idea so as not to add to the drag (a cap), mess with your form (a band on the arm), or give you Alzheimer's (the aluminum in the anti-perspirant).
Since you're already sweating, you're not exactly winning the public over with looks and sex appeal, so why worry about dorkiness with the band? |
