Thanks in advance!

Hi, I completely understand, however, your "over weight" is so minor that I really wouldn't worry about it. Personally I don't stay motivated, I force myself not to eat too many calories - every day.

If you need to lose another few pounds, try eating a healthy meal every day. I have changed a meal a day for soup, that may be extreme for some so try something else. Change your breakfast from bread to low fat youghurt with some fruit and muesli, could be as simple as that. Or at least change whatever you eat for breakfast to something lighter (whole milk for semi-skimmed, white bread for whole grain etc). Never take second helpings! Don't drink beer if you can help it, white wine is better.

And even though it is boring and I sound like a real mom - eat slowly! You will feel full sooner than you think!

Walk up the stairs to your apartment instead of taking the elevator. Walk one extra subway/bus stop instead of getting on closest to home. Explore your environment, walk a direction you haven't walked before for 15 minutes and walk another route back.

Get a routine. After a month of doing something that seems really strenous in the beginning, it starts feeling like second nature.

Cool tip with the Up Day Down Day Diet! Also, interesting to actually see how much calories are in fries... never again

Aisha, that calculator doesn't really sound right!? According to it, I should use 1464 Calories (or kcals) for my day, other calulators range from 2800 to 3500? Am I missing something? I have lost 8 kg in 25 days or so and never felt better. I eat good stuff every day. Substitute one meal a day for a soup (but it can be with chicken pieces in it or a hardy meat soup or similar) and do 30-40 minutes high speed elliptical plus a 45 minute fast walk a day. I would guess that I eat somewehere around 1500 calories a day spread on 5 meals. 5 fruit or veg a day. But according to the calculator here on Traineo, I excercise away around 1000 calories. Don't really see how my muscles can be eaten up and become larger at the same time? And I am feeling better than ever! Sure, I don't expect to keep this up for more than another 2 months BUT I will not go back to my old food and I will try to balance my calorie intake to my calorie output, that's why I would really like to find out what - exactly - my body requires in calories to stay at the same level.

Thankful for any reply and by the way - Andrej, good job! Just make sure not to fall back into your old routine.

I punched in this information in several different calculators and got the same answers all over, without any mention of exercise. A long time ago I was told that men (and this was a broad generalization) should diet slowly by eating no more or less than 2100 calories. According to Traineo, and if my thoughts are correct, my "maintenance intake" should be around 2700 which makes the "2100 to diet" sound just about right...

I think it has a completely different meaning. The calories mentioned are calculated based on gender, height and weight. They are your "maintenance calories" - what your body will consume doing nothing but being. (I base this on other sites, Google "Calorie Calculator" and you will find a few that show pretty much the same results as here)

If you eat the suggested intake, and do nothing, you will stay level in weight. If you go under, you will loose weight.

I go around 1000 calories under every day, which the Traineo site says is bad for me (pull the slider all the way to the right and you will see the scale go red). You need to find a balance between dieting and eating healthy (of course so I would say your intake should be 500 or so lower than the suggested amount in order to maximize your dieting without ruining your health, burning muscle etc.

Good luck!

Good job! Keep it up. I would go crazy if the scale didn't move for two weeks, but you kept at it and it paid of. Good for you.

Because I quickly reduce the intake of calories and it actually keeps me full for quite a while. But of course I will have to mak my own soups in order to make them healthier and with less sugar/salt.

I had a 4 day cheating session which is why I didn't reply. A appreciate all input here and will just answer briefly:

Yes, I absolutely see a very big change in muscle tone of legs, butt, stomach and also some of the shoulders and upper arms (probably because of how the elliptical triner excersizes the body). I am still not loosing weight but I will change the way I intake calories from Thursday (Valentine's will contain wine and pancakes, can't have wifey have mimosas and other good stuff on her own). I will then likely stop completely with alcohol an sub one meal a day with soup and add two snacks containing just fruit. Most likely I will have to move my goal to a later date, but I have to be realistic.

The salt thing is more going back to a healthy level instead of "salting for color", I like salt but recent Swedish studies tells that pretty much all grown ups eat way too much salt. I will not cut it out, but I can probably decrease my intake to a healthy dose.

As a layman I ahev never heard of "tearing down muscle" and other lingo you use here, I appreciate all input like I said and please keep it coming.

Thanks a lot of your advice and encouragement!

And although I wish this effort was for a fighter jet piloting position, it sadly isn't... I'm too tall for that ;)

Thanks for those encouraging words, yes I am a "big guy" at almost 6.3 and 254 pounds. I am eating well below what my body consumes but not as little as to make me overly tired or dizzy. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks!

Kelsey made me understand what is happening, and it is happening faster than I had previously understood. Muscle mass increases in weight much faster than the fat loses weight (does that make sense?). I have been what I would call "damn good" for three weeks but my weight-loss stopped after 10 days. After seeing Kelseys post I realize that I have lost quite a bit of fat and gained quite a bit of muscle. To all of you out there wondering what the h*ll is happening, and why you aren't shedding any pound any longer - I hope that is the explanation for you too. Keep it up and good luck!

Hi,

I have pretty much completely quit carbs and I follow a regimen where I eat around 2000 calories (as opposed to the 2700 recommended by this site). I also exercise off around 6-900 calories a day in the form of walking and elliptical trainer. After a week of dieting I had lost close to 6 kilos, I know that is probably near 5 kilos of just water but I have kept going for another 2 weeks and have GAINED 2 kilos.

I am slimmer at the waist and I have a more toned bum and legs, but can the weight be muscle? I am less fat, I am pretty sure, but am I retianing water for some weird reason? I am, by the way, usineg less salt than ever.

Thankful for your input!

Sincerely,

Fred

I have tried the extreme meals loads of times and I always get so bored that I stop dieting. This time I made up my mind, no more painfully boring meals, just skip all sweet stuff apart from Diet Coke now and then, and all sugar, white flour, pasta, bread and rice. Wild rice is ok. Bulgur wheat is ok too, just made my own "taboule" and it is extremely good. I make salads with "tsatsiki" (greek yoghurt dressing from non fat yoghurt, garlic, mint and cucumber) as dressing. Works as a sauce for meat etc as well. I wok a lot, I use ANY vegetables I feel like with any meat, fish or poultry I like and I still lose weight. Stop tormenting yourselves with boring food, it is counter productive and not good for the health. Good luck, eat well, eat healthy but please, eat something good.

Last week I lost 4 kilos in 5 days, and another Kg in the three days following. This week I have lost around a kilo the first 4 days, so yes, it will slow down, and as far as I have read, around 75% of the weight I lost the first week is water. If you go back to normal habits now, chances are you will get those pounds back pretty quickly. But if you keep dieting/exercising those pounds will stay off as far as I know. Good job, keep it up!

Hi,

Since nobody has yet written here, I will start, maybe someone will feel compelled to follow. I have never kept any New Years resolutions before, but this time I felt it was a necessary evil. I started off on a hefty 121 Kg (almost 267 pounds) - Yikes. I am tall, 191 cm (almost 6.3) so that covered up some, but it is silly to carry around all that baggage. I signed up here yesterday and even though I have posted a 1 kg drop, that was actually from this week-end... I am not trying to make it sound better than it is.

I am a graphic designer / art director. I have worked at agencies but chose to stay at home. I would appreciate tips on how you guys make ends meet, where you find work or any other interesting tidbits you have to share. I work a bit on Elance off and on but other than that I find my clients locally. I'll be happy to discuss this further if there's any interest.

Good luck getting rid of those extra pounds, I will update my page here often and I hope to hear from some of you.

Sincerely,

Fredrik
