Great to see you Jem!! I lurk around Traineo from time to time. I was going to do the switch to Sparks People, but didn't like the format....
I am keeping off the 30ish pounds with some ups and downs. I am on hiatus through the holidays. We will see how much damage occurs!!!!

Excellent choice of food, Kris. Most of us have found that lots of protein and saving most of our calories until evening help a lot.
2000 calories for an up day sound great. Especially since you are so strict about the under 500 calorie down day.

Hey there,
I have been with this program for 2 years. I go off for holidays ( about to go off for a week over Thanksgiving ) and summers are brutal for me!!! I gain about 5-8 pounds during these periods and get right back to JUDDing also known as ADD. I don't have the emotional battle of starting another diet!!! and I don't get discouraged by the weight gain.
Charla, it sounds like are you are figuering out what works for you!!!

You are both on the right track. When I started ADD two years ago, people thought I was crazy too!!! Now 2 years later, 30 pounds gone AND staying off... the scoffers are no longer amused.
It truely is a way of eating and managing weight for life!!!
I with you all the best.

I teach first grade.... the more "hands on" and visual the better. Using magazine pictures to place nutrition foods/non nutrition foods.
Also some classic books, " The Very Hungry Catipillar" and "More spaghetti, I say" . The teacher will probably already have these on hand.
Enjoy...... they are fun!!!

Howdy David and Minu!!!!
Great to see some "old" folksters around.... meaning, of course, long time JUDDERS!! I might look into those crackers. I have also gotten dd's down to a no brainer system. Even after 2 years I continue to struggle with up days, especially the evening hours!!!
The evidence of a few of us hanging around is an indication that, indeed, this a way of eating for life!

HI Angie,
Thanks for your message!!! I am still Judding away and really love it after almost 2 years. I will spike a 5-8 pound gain and then get back on it and quickly lose again. I am maintaining about the 145 range and size 12.... I am happy with that.
How is your sister? I hope her prognosis is good. Give yourself lots of grace. When i was taking care of my very ill mother..... losing weight was the last thing on my mind!!!

Hi to all!!
My computer was infected with a virus and it took ages to get it up and running again..... mainly because I had to work around vacations.
This summer has been nuts for me and I almost bailed on any kind of eating/exercise plan..... BUT then I realized I had to stick a few dd's in there for emotional reasons. I knew that one dd in isolation wouldn't create a significant weight loss, but it helped so much for me to feel better... physically and emotionally. I think our body just needs a break from digestion for awhile.
I just returned from a family reunion at a midwest lake.... I tell you those, midwesterners know how to appreciate life with good food and lots of it!!!
Soon I will need to deal with the reality of it all and get on the scale. As for now, I need to dig out from the accumulated paper piles. ( hope I remembered to pay the electric bill :confused

Hi to all,
Great to see David and Minu popping in...... Like Minu said - it is a reunion of sorts!
I am in the same camp as Minu. Hovering around goal..... thought I would be thrilled as can be with my new weight.... but I want an extra cushion. Seems like any vacation, celebration, etc. pushes me back to a number I never want to see again!!! So I am Judding away until I go to Hawaii on June 19th. The summer is another lost cause... so many vacations, events, kids home, For me, it really is worse than the holidays.
The biggest thing for me is my new found cardio ability. Last week, I did a spinning marathon/ fund raiser at my local Y. I have never felt so great!!!
Great to see you all. I am a JUDDER for life!

Well, I am pretty jazzed. I did a "spin mini marathon/fundraiser" at my YMCA yesterday.
2 1/2 hours of intense spinning...... I did it!!!! with all those young whippersnappers!!
I really am feeling the energy and vitality I had as a younger me....
Gratitude abounds........

How to increase energy on DDs? And trend of weight

Hi there Hannah,
400 calories is pretty low. I find dd much more doable at the 500-600 mark. The key for me seems to be protein, protein, protein!!!
I have been at this for almost 1 1/2 year. I am pretty much at maintenance now ( of course, I would love to lose ten more pounds) but ultimately, I am learning to accept my body as it is!!
Hang in there and find how to tweak it to make it work!

My dad has lived his entire life ( he is now 82, bikes, skiis, golfs, travels... just got married) with the "to hell with it" mantra for weekends. The rest of the week he is stellar- low cal, lots of exercise, etc.
Maybe the key is balance..... we are all living life to its fullest, which sometimes includes food and a party here and there.

Hi There,
One of the first "compliments" I got was from a co-worker it went something like this:
"Wow.... you have really lost weight.... like.... what ... a ton?!?!"
I had the same reaction as you, instead of feeling any good from the comment I felt like I really must have been a "two ton tilly"!!
People are clueless. Bottom line we are our best cheerleaders!!

Quoting: wayofthewarrior some of his closer friends that he really isn't going to be up to the challenge and may actually destroy the experience for everyone else involved.
I am curious about this comment.... is it directed to his phyical ability only or some other issues that are of concern?
The reason I ask is that the above strategy of natural weeding out those who are not capable physically is great..... really takes you out of the direct position of talking to him. However, this statement indicates there may be other issues besides physical.
It seems like being a part of an intense rowing team will involve the physical ability and also great emotional stability to really team play when things get tough!!
At any rate, if in fact, he is not a good fit. Is there anyway this information could come to him ..... not from you directly... so the other aspects of your relationship could be kept in tact.

JUDDDD + Exercise

Posted: April 15, 2008
Hey,
There are many avid exercisers who also JUDD. While JUDDing, I have undertaken quite a rigorous exercise program. It may take a little adjustment to figuere out the time. My best, most energetic exercise is the morning after an up day...... I tend to exercise in the a.m. so the morning after a dd is a little bit weaker, but I eat at least 1 1/2 hour before I exercise.
And by exercising, I mean a super intense "spin" class that is supposed to burn almost 800-1000 calories in an hour!!!
You may need to play with it a little.... but it is doable!

So hungry on UP days--please help!

Hi There,
I am with Monica = think "fill me up" foods..... and maybe spacing your meal out. I am on an up day and am "in the middle" of breakfast. About an hour ago I had a small bowl of cereal ---- about 5 minutes a go, I had a 100 calorie yogurt... and I am going to have a protein bar in a few minutes because I am off to the gym for a step class.
Also, I am realizing as I am within 10 pounds of my goal that this is a very frustrating diet with those who have only 10 pounds to lose and don't need to drastically change their lifestyle. It is a "long haul" road, not a quick way of getting rid of 10 pounds that creeped up.
After reading the book, I realize that the Dr. , himself, is living with 10 extra pounds he would rather not have, but he is maintaining that weight and not gaining weight!!! That is the key.

Exercise Equipment and Obesity
Exercise & Training Tips

my brother died at the age of 54 and 420 pounds. Truely, exercise equipment for him would have been a joke! Just walking up three steps was an incredible work out for him and walking to the end of the block was out of his range of movement. Movement of any type is the way to go.
I think everyone has hit on the key issue... at that weight, motivation and physical limitations are the hindering factors to exercise.

Quoting: melissaj I, too, am still struggling on UD's,
After over a year and shedding 30 pounds, up days are still my struggle!
I really think the key is not starving yourself everyday.... the emotional component of not dieting every day is a key component to the long term success of this WOE.

Hi there,
What a bummer...... everyone has such good things to say. The consensus seems to be... don't take your doctor for his last word. Do a little more investigating.
1000 calories is very low for everyday and seems like it is a recipe for one huge backlash.
I have been on the JUDD which is calorie cycling - really keeps the body guessing. I am going to try and go dig up the link.

this is really becoming an issue. I really feel for the people trying to get groups going and members with no background or interest "hop on" thinking it is a general chat thread. I accidently found myself in the "think yourself thin" group!
Pretty soon our gentleman friends are going to find themselves chatting away on "lactating mommies" and not realize where they are! LOL
This problem really needs to be addressed. I think Rachael and Minu have tried to email the techies.

Hey there Kim, Welcome!!
Lots of people get on a set schedule and have two up days in a row. It works!! I have done that at several different points. I do have to say that I am the most successful when I can really do the every other day no matter what. It has meant gutting through a few social events. I usually give myself a cut off date. Like from now until April 21, I am going every other day - no matter what!!
The most important thing is to pick at least 3 days a week you can dd and stick to them!!! There is lots of flexibility. Keep us posted!
