Talk to me of low-carb...
Diet & Nutrition Tips
Posted: May 03, 2009
I have PCOS myself and weight loss has always been difficult for me. so i know your frustration.
right now i am following as close as i can get to a Low G.I diet. i haven't done the phases i just try to follow as close as my budget will allow. i have a book coming that is called New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS: Lose Weight, Boost Fertility and Gain Control Over Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome with the Glycemic index(will let you know if it is any good). the are many more out there. there is one about insulin resistance that many PCOS sufferers have used too. i can't remember the exact title.

maybe you could go to the local library(i tried here myself, they have nothing literally) and look up G.I diets or insulin reistance diets . they are often low carb, high protein. some say if your going to have a high glycemic food pair a low glycemic with it. take all the information you find and work it to fit your diet and lifestyle.

that is what i have done, i am not following any diet religiously. just taking the information and using it to help me with a lifestyle change thats suitable for me and so far i managed to lose 8 pounds, without exercising, in a short amount of time. i cut bread mostly out but still eat potatoes, i just do it a couple times a week and have a half a stuffed potato and i make sure i have a half a plate full of salad and veggies(i love broccoli too with it.

my best advice i guess is research as much as you can for pcos friendly diets(diabetic, insulin resistant, low G.I) and then use what you need to suit your body and lifestyle from that info.
And don't be too hard on yourself. with pcos you can do everything right and still not lose for periods of time.
that's one of the many curses of the it

good luck and take care

ty and your welcome.
i've had Pcos for years(diagnosed early 20's) and insulin problems in the past few years.
i'm still leery of taking medication(would have to go on metformin) because i am not sure how long my prescription coverage will last, it truly would be the last resort for me and it was never a secret i hate taking medication.

Surprisingly though if it will help jumpstart the weight loss with the low G.I like diet, i'm willing to take it.
i have to discuss the pros and cons of it with the doctor though before a final decision.
also thanks to a mystery illness(undiagnosed so far) affecting my bones and muscles i can't do the heavy cardio workouts as often i was doing last year so my focus will be on diet this time around.

i've just begun researching PCOS and insulin reistance so i don't have all the information but what i have found explains alot of what i experienced last year and recently. it's a relief to know there IS a reason and there CAN be a solution to help.

despite what people on the forums told me last year when i mentioned it,I have recently discovered if you have PCOS and insulin resistance. weight loss is extremely difficult to achieve following the eat less and exercise more plan. sufferers often have to work twice as hard for weight loss then others. anybody who remembers me from last year knows i had(still do)a difficult time losing weight, even though i was eating healthy and exercising like crazy,. in fact i lost nothing at all.
well now i know why.
i was eating food that are considered high glycemic and thanks to the PCOS with that i was just making things worse.

so i just wanted to let women out there on traineo know if you are like i was last year and doing everything you are supposed to and your gaining weight or not losing it when you should be even though your doing everything everybody else is and they are losing... Go to your doctor and get your hormone levels checked.there are alot of undiagnosed women out there and it can be a possible explanation.there are things that can be done to help promote weight loss including diet and medications(hopefully as a last resort, in my case).

after unexplainable weight gain(yes, you can gain weight even eating lower calorie and healthy if you have insulin resistant PCOS if you are eating the wrong type of foods and it can happen fast ) recently i discovered what had gone wrong with me.

now i am looking to start a diet that follows the low glycemic index that fits my budget the best it can. i'm hoping it helps like other PCOS sufferers say it will.

i normally don't post to forums anymore but i thought this was too important for women to know whether they be diagnosed or undiagnosed. it is a whole lot less devastating to know there is a reason and there are things you can do about it.

thanks.

Hi i just got Stott pilates basic.has anybody had experience with this?
i am also trying out prenatal pilates even though i am not pregnant because i think it will work better on my obese body.

my concern is the breathing and the ab.. (holds?), each one has differing ideas of what to do i have tried the "zip and hollow" of plus size pilates and can't hold it to do the exercises.i also can't "engage" my abs for the amount of time it takes t get the exercise done either.
yes i am that out of shape...

any suggestions?

Thank you!

I'm entering into a big time of change in my life. I can't go into a whole lot of details at this point (this is a public forum and I don't know who reads this stuff but never posts). It's definitely going to be a good change and put me in a better place.

sorry it took me so long to see this. i hope it all worked out. good luck with the change in your life.

i hope things have improved for you.

To me, to have an income where you'd be considered poor would have to be more like under $30k, but that's just me.

Just giving her a kick in the butt type thing, is NOT going to help her.

it didn't. all it proved to me is that alot of people are a-holes and i am right not to trust them.with some exceptions.

not that it's anybody's business i am lucky if i clear over $10,000 a year. i have to rely on relatives and friends for hand me down clothes and certain household objects. i pay an affordable amount for rent because i am the housekeeper of the house and i do the ALL house errands on the days my body lets me leave the house. i buy my own food because the person i live with eats totally different things so we buy our own stuff.i can't drive, i can't afford bus fare in city or out of. i need first, last months rent and a security deposit to move anywhere also that doesn't include moving expenses of the important things like a bed to sleep in(cause at my income i can't afford a new one) clothes and dishes.

also MOST of you are telliing me to change something about myself that took years to grow and instill itself in me, you expect me to change it NOW. it don't work that way. it takes time and i am working on it but it doesn't change overnight.

right now i have a very serious health issue going on and haven't got clear answers yet to what i really have but have been told it may be very bad and i need to brace myself for the possibilty and i don't need this crap on top of it.so for now i am gone. i will return occasionally to update my logs, update on my health to those people who are on the friends list and send some good wishes to those same friends.i won't be posting on the forum.

congratulations boys and couple of girls you got your wish i'm mostly gone but like hemorrhoids i may be back. you win...... for now.....

i'm not in america. and yes it is that expensive, a few days ago it was $13.45 it fluctuates daily.

if i could freaking afford to leave i would! i have been trying for god knows how long to save the money for it AND IT COSTS MONEY TO MOVE!

In any case, I call bullshit. You're probably in a self-exagerrated situation that isn't nearly as bad as you say (you haven't named what town you live in, so the power of Google cannot be used to prove what you're saying is true or false), so you're spinning a web of lies so deep that you might as well be working for the Bush administration (oh yes, I went there). There really isn't anything you can say to justify the plain and simple truth that YOU are in control of YOUR LIFE and, right now, you're LETTING it kick you in the ass.

why the hell would i tell you exactly where i live. i never tell anyone where i live. i don't know you. i don't even tell people i meet on the street where i live. i have mentioned i am in northern canada.

think whatever the hell you want i am done with this!

piss off!

and chicken breast isn't cheap! why am i going to spend 14 bucks on four chicken breasts when i can buy sandwich makings that will last me a hell of alot longer!!!

I live in northern canada practically in the middle of a damn forest so ya your pretty close! maybe your american stuff is cheaper i don't know.

I DON'T HAVE MUCH MONEY!

i have to stretch out what i got!

and i said i buy tuna, jerk, i'm saying the fresher stuff and certain items aren't cheap where i am.

there's always gotta be one jerkoff that makes me reconsider being a part of something like this, i met one today. i may have a woe is me viewpoint, it's the way i am, of the world but it doesn't mean what i am saying is any less true.

i am having a similar problem with weather though not severe as a hurricane.

we are having rare hot weather here soometimes going up in the mid 30'c with humidity. when you are from northern canada where we have winter 8 months out of the year and temperature's drop to -55c some weeks during winter having this kind of heat is hard on our bodies.we aren't used to it.

then add on when i get overheated i get dizzy and pass out. right now all i gotta do is sit here and that happens so actually working out is impossible for me. what i try to do is put a workout in my housework.

instead of picking alot of items up at the same time to take elsewhere i take one at a time meaning i have to go back repeatedly for the next. it gives me bit of a walk then especially if there are alot of items i have to move. not much but it's something.

i wish i could do the same thing with the outside stuff but discovered when i spend too much time in the sun i break out in red spots and blisters all over my body. there is one on my arm(exposed to the sun) that looked like i held a ciggarette to it for a second or two. freaked me out. otherwise i would do the same thing with the outside work too.

good luck on your 5k!!!

obviously alot of you must have comfortable incomes and live places where they don't overcharge because shipping is expensive to an isolated area.

The money i spent on buying the ingredients for the salads with tuna would be about $25, it would last me maybe two days, three if do the starvation thing. i take that same $25 buy a couple of loaves of bread a couple of packages of beef bologna or hot dogs, a large container of skim milk, some cans of tuna for variety and i have enough left over for a couple of pieces of fresh fruit(which is expensive around here) and whatever they might be having a sale on in the canned veggie and soup department and i got myself food to last me awhile. except for the tuna, veggie and fruit none of the other stuff is that healthy and can be quite fattening(especially when you gain two pounds just LOOKING at heavy carbs). meat is a treat and sometimes a person can only afford it twice a month if there is a sale. frozen veggies and fruit here cost almost as much as the real thing.

it's not all bull, it's difficult but you can have a semi decent diet not the perfect one everyone says you need to have but you can still make healthy changes.

try to keep in mind that some people do live in poverty(i'm sinking deeper as time passes and student loans want thier money that i can't pay) and live in areas where food is expensive to ship to so what is cheap for you might not be cheap for them. you wouldn't believe the price of potatoes here recently. you get what you can afford and quite often it is the unhealthy stuff.

Don't tear my head off and say i am making excuses. this is the way it is. not everyone is lucky to live in places with cheap food or have enough of a income so they can buy the foods that they WANT to buy.

i am telling you the viewpoint of someone who IS poor and struggles to have a healthy diet.

Wheat and dairy are famous for causing allergies, and often the symptoms are masked.

is this why i always feel sick to my stomach after eating something 100% whole wheat? i can deal with the 60% ok but the other one makes me feel awful everytime i eat it.

goals for the 6-8 months

my goals are: 1)more portion and calorie control(working on it, working on it)

2) tone up more

3)up workouts to six times a week

4)more yoga

5) be able to eventually see if i actually have hip bones and a butt and not two VERY large round lumps of fat......

6) start cooking low fat meals more often and cut back on easy to make or ready made foods

7) start baking more so i can have sugar free alternatives for my sweet cravings.

8) start turbo jam and keep up

9) start learning different kinds of dance workouts(bollywood, industrial strength, tahitian and hula, exotic) and accept i might not ever be graceful and fluid like them but i can still enjoy shaking what i got.

10) find some confidence and self esteem.

Edited to add: forgot to add "finish crocheting that bloody blanket by x-mas" maybe if i put it here it will remind me it needs to be done.

ok now i am laughing hysterically. in the past two weeks i have barely exercised (like maybe three days out of two weeks)my diet has gotten slightly off track(not majorly just a had fries more than i allow myself) and ...i lost another pound.

thus the hysterics i couldn't lose a thing when i was working my butt off and now it's coming off without me doing anything. maybe i should do that more often? workout hard for 6 days a week for 3 weeks and then take a week off?

am appalled that a counselor would leave a patient with a history of suicidal thoughts for an entire month before a period when she has historically had difficulty. The least she could have done is set up an interim counselor.

it's not the counsler who is at fault. it's the medical system. i have repeatedly asked for help from mental health here three times. all for them to tell me i am not"depressed" enough for them to give me any. apparently because i keep myself clean and brush my hair i don't qualify. exact words from the counsler i was seeing at that time. i have asked for help three times since a month after my father died and i moved back here. the first time i got into a major screaming match with the counsler they set me up with(opposite personalities who clashed even she agreed) and the second time the counsler said if i didn't do what she said she couldn't help i tried her again for the third time and she took my words and twisted them into something i never said at all. at that point i told them where they could stick thier so called help all they did was make things worse.since she my counsler is the only "soft"counsler(thier words for someone who you talk to iinstead of get help with meds) there is nobody else to talk to except these idiots. they would just make things worse.

Thanks for the great advice and the wonderful support i will do what i can as i am able.

i am confused by some of the dvd's i use for strength training.

one of them says to do it 4 to 5 days a week for best results. which means there is barely no rest period.

The weight's being used are 3pnd to 5 pnd weights(for now) and the exercises are lots of repetition, i use the s.w.a.t body definition and rarely biggest loser power sculpt. they use alot of curls, raises, push-ups and squats to work the whole body.

since the weights are so light could these exercises be done daily? or should you still give your muscles a break for a day?

i want to tone up some and build a little bit of muscle to define but i don't want to hurt myself in some way doing it either.

Thank you, and i do understand what all of you are saying and if i had that ability to let go yet i would be following the advice.

there are also other issues involved with me being unable to go out and make friends too including a health one that can keep me from going anywhere and sometimes stop me from doing things i want to do.

i won't even go into the emotional issues...

but thank you all for listening or in this case reading and replying.

I've found that, when you bump into them in town and the first thing they'll do is apologise

Geez, i guess you guys are the lucky ones.seriously.

i have met a few of the people from my past and all i got was "hey your that fat %&*# we used to make cry" or they don't even remember what they did to me or who i am and there was physical abuse. you would think you would remember someone you punched in the head and ribs a few times but apparently not.

i wish someone would apologize. would be nice. i went from outgoing gentle kid who made friends with everybody no matter what clique to that scared(prone to violence when trying to protect myself) freak shaking in the corner hoping i didn't go home with bruises that day the worst one was some guy thought it was funny to shove my face into a snowbank by pushing me from behind then the whole lot stood around and watched while i started choking on snow that had turned to ice in my throat i still don't know how i got that thing out as things were going black.yes it was only a few of the kids that were abusive physically but it changed me as a person and not in a pleasant way.

so no, i don't think i will be forgiving these people too soon. the memories are too harsh right now(even after all this time) maybe time will soften them.

the only bully in town that i know of who feels bad about the past is myself. when i got sick and tired in high school of being a hysical and verbal punching bag i turned on another kid to get the focus off of me. to him if i ever met him again i would apologize and tell him there are no excuses and that i am sorry i hurt him in anyway.

i understand what you are saying though i have to let go to move on. it's just hard. really hard when there was physical cruelty on top of emotional involved.

well ya i just wanted to explain why i can't bring myself to forgive these people yet...if at all....i can understand why there was some of the bullying now that i am older but i don't think i can ever understand why the physical abuse.

So just for the heck of it i went and weighed myself today, i seem to have this weird addiction to that scale and can't stay away for longer than a week. i haven't been exercising for almost a week now and my diet hasn't been as strict as it had been when i started(i keep trying to start up again but life and my spotty health has been getting in the way) so i figured it as probably going to be up there in the even more depressing range. ok to let you know the last time i weight myself i was 255. 8, i know i should put 256 into the weight log but i was sick and tired of looking at 256.

my weight today 255.0. somehow despite the fact that i haven't been doing anything(except standing in an emergency room for about two hours...long story about my mom, she's fine ). i am still dealing with the shock and trying to figure out how it happened so i can keep doing it.

also i just found motivation and it came from an unexpected place. the old friend who had came to the house and noticed(and mentioned) i had lost weight has been talking to her mom about me and says if i can work out and eat healthy and start looking like that then she can too. so it looks like she is going to be doing her own thing because apparently i inspired her. she doesn't need to lose much weight she was already slender but there can be some toning and it never hurts to eat healthy. i am still in a state of shock that i managed to inspire somebody....seriously i never inspired anybody to do anything in my entire life...well until this..

so bluntly put i can't give up now that someone's looking to me to succeed so they know they can too.

looks like it's back to the ole diet and workout routine, although with some changes so it's not so overwhelming like it has been.

alix,Unfortunately there isn't much here that is available and what s here has a long waiting list.also i am having a hard time keeping myself organized. organizing a group is out of the question.

racheal, This is my hometown, i was born here, grew up here escaped here but like pure evil it reached out and pulled me back in. so now i am trapped here once more. the people who are here now mostly are the same people who tormented me endlessly when i was a kid and just needed some compassion from someone. we may all be adults now and some may be different but i can't forget the misery i was put through just because i was different and don't want to "make" friends with these same people. i know it means i end up lonely.

as it comes to this depression, i guess i just have to suck it up and deal the best i can.
When will i be able to trust the scale?
Exercise & Training Tips
Posted: July 25, 2008
Trust me i know how you feel. i have been at this for almost two months (and until recently i was exercising six days a week with a mix of cardio and strength training, i have cut down and right now due to illness am barely doing anything)now and all the scale does is go up. i have not lost anything but inches.

Maybe you should do measurements with a tape measure instead so you can see the changes.

also i talked to a nurse and she told me it could be two to three months before i see anything on the scale due to muscle building up. don't know if she's right but between that and the heartbreak of seeing that number on the scale weekly i have put the scale away for a month or so.

Good luck!
