Wow Angie!!! I haven't been on Traineo in a LONG time, but I remembered your name - then I looked at the pics and I was like "nnaaaa, that's not the same Angie" - I remembered seeing a pic of you in a purple bridesmaid dress. So I looked in your profile and there it was! You literally look like a different person, what fantastic results!!!

It is crazy to see how much progress you have made - while I have GAINED weight since I was here last I really let the whole diet/fitness regime go to hell in the last year! Talk about a kick in the behind though, maybe I could be posting hot pics on here this time next year Thanks for the inspiration

Woohoo eggs rock! I stopped eating them when I found out I had high cholesterol cause at the time they were bad for it - supposedly! But now they are saying that an egg a day can actually help to lower cholesterol... bloody researchers, make up your minds!!! I'm happy to be eating eggs again though
How does this make sense??

Haha I heard someone say that muscle was EIGHT times heavier than fat... bit of wishful thinking on their part I think!

So you've gained 6 lbs... and yet your goal is to lose 18? Seems like a bit of a miscalculation to me... That would put you at 98lbs which would probably be way underweight - unless you are really petite?

If you are extra-hungry all of a sudden maybe your body is just telling you that you need to eat more... and maybe give yourself a bit of a break from exercise every now and then - 100 mins is a lot of running, especially if you are doing it every day!

Why, why, WHY do they put mirrors in a gym?!?!?! Nobody looks good in the gym for god's sake! Don't beat yourself up so much...

It is easy to focus on what you look like in a negative way but two things...

1. If it wasn't the weight that bothered you it would be 'oh I'm so sweaty and red' or something similar - in other words EVERYBODY will find some fault with themselves while jiggling about on a treadmill!

2. I guarantee that there was somebody else there worse off than you! Or probably more to the point there are people worse off who are not in the gym but are sitting at home on the couch eating - at least you are DOING something about losing weight.

I don't know if you have that TV show over there 'How to Look Good Naked'? That is so what you need right now... it's all about loving your body even if it's not perfect - they just do a makeover no lipo!!!

Anyway chin up, you will get there eventually

Good luck! Don't be afraid of weights or even gaining a little weight if it is because you are building muscle.

I heard a great interview of a female personal trainer. She has worked with lots of women who "just want to lose weight". Even very thin women say this. She has them feel their arms and asks what they feel. Generally, they say that it feels soft or flabby. She will then ask them if they like the size of their arms. If they say yes, she points out that muscle weighs more than fat. So, if they work out to keep their arms/legs/whatever the same size but do it with muscle, they will weigh more.

I know this makes sense, but I still think I would be upset if I gained weight! I know it's stupid and it's only a number and all that... I still want to see that number get smaller though, I don't know why!!!

Yes 100 pushups is great although I am still at about 5 pushups - and they are 'girly' ones too hahaha!!!

I think you can probably get a lot of good info out of existing topics on this forum, since Ms. M will call me out if I go off on the same tirade that I usually do, so I'll just point you at another thread here to get you started:

Tirade away Cliff!!! I won't say anything I promise You give great advice and as you said before there are constantly new people on this forum so that advice is needed. Anyway how much of a hypocrite am I, posting a topic less than a week later about wanting to gain muscle lol I could have done with some advice on that one

Glovia I know you are disappointed but I think that is amazing!!! The marathon I was supposed to be training for is in 2 weeks time but I won't be doing it because I gave up training for it! So I think it is fantastic just to run a marathon at all, you should be proud

Still I know you probably want to improve your times each time you run a marathon so I can see why you would be upset... I don't know anything about that spray but maybe that was it! It would be interesting to see what other people say if they have tried it... All the other things you did in preparation sound really good - although maybe a little intense! Do you ever take any days completely off from training?

Congratulations on finishing another marathon - I think you should be happy that you completed it even though it didn't go perfectly - and just take a nice long rest, you deserve it
I can't run very far... advice?
Exercise & Training Tips

Maybe you are running too fast? I used to do that at the start, just set off running at what felt like a normal speed but then nearly collapse after a few minutes! It was only when I started running slower that I could go further - obviously over time you can start to go faster again but only when you're used to it. It is hard to get over that barrier unless you slow down at first.

Try starting off by going WAY slower than you think you should... make sure it is slow enough that your breathing only gets a little bit harder. I think the main problem that people have when starting to run is that they can't control their breathing but once you go slow enough that you don't get too out of breath you should be fine!

Something that I found out this year: the first 10 minutes is harder than the first 10 miles! I know it sounds odd but it took me sooooo long to build up to just running for 10 minutes and I thought I'd NEVER get there... that took from January till maybe April/May... and then by July/August I was running 10 miles - by then it just seemed so easy in comparison! You will get there eventually just keep at it

Thanks anyway though

Thanks for the link Angie... although it told me my body fat was 32% whereas I thought it was 26%... eek!!! When they ask for the abdomen measurement do they mean your waist or your midsection (i.e. a couple of inches below your belly button)? Anyway it gave my daily protein requirement as 77g which I probably don't get anywhere near on a normal day! So I will give it a go...

CM I am actually in a gym - but um... I haven't gone in months cos I just prefer exercising outdoors! But if I want to do weights I suppose I will have to hit the gym again... the weights section in my gym is huge and filled with muscley men so quite scary... and the staff aren't very helpful! Any time I've ever asked them anything all I've gotten is 'Uhhhh..... ummmm... I'm not sure...' But I might get my fiancee to come with me and he can show me what to do!

I just made a depressing discovery... I did the calculations for lean body mass and body fat % that Shawn was talking about on another thread and found out that of the 7lbs I lost recently only 3lbs were fat So that means 4lbs of LBM lost... I know that is not TOO drastic but I'm planning on losing more weight, so how can I be sure that won't be mostly muscle too?!?!

I think I know the answer already... weight training??? Currently all I really do is running and it is pretty low intensity too. The problem is I just don't know what to do with weights - and also that I can barely even pick up a 10lb weight...

Can anyone suggest some kind of program that will:

1. First of all, tell me what kind of exercises/weights I am supposed to do!

2. Be a fairly intense workout - but doable with lighter weights to start with!!!

3. And finally be somewhat enjoyable for someone who thinks weight training is painfully boring.

Hmm tall order I guess... any advice at all would be appreciated!

Another thing, could the LBM loss be from not getting enough protein? Cos that's another thing I'm pretty bad at, so I might need to work on that too...

Hi Matt, yes it can if you click on 'Use Custom Figure' and enter in around 1500 cals the whole scale will change so that the lower end is around what you want to record. I think if you go too far from the centre of the scale (1500 in this case) in either direction - so if you don't eat enough - you will get less points! Which solves the problem on your other thread too...

Agreed also! I wish i'd never seen 2 and 3... by the way have people heard about the Donnie Darko sequel that is being made??? I heard about it the other day and was like "Nooooooo!!!" There is just no way to follow up that movie...

For losing weight I would say higher reps, lighter weights, less rest

I disagree wholeheartedly with the philosophy of higher reps, lighter weights and less rest for anything other than endurance training.

If it's not this it's debates about whether HIIT is the best thing ever or not... So I wasn't saying anything about the topic itself, but when I saw the title I thought "Oh yay, ANOTHER debate about weight training!!!"

And yes, yes I know if I don't have anything to add why did I even bother to comment - but I guess that's just the mood I'm in today

Stephanie, I recommend a sex change

Haha sorry I couldn't resist... anyway my point is, yes, you may be right and it may be harder for women but there ain't a hell of a lot you can do about being a woman, is there? So just get on with it... and hey, at least we are usually less hairy!?!?!

I've actually been dieting for almost two months, having good habits like cutting out soda (still trying to kick the diet coke habit though), sugar free/fat free/reduced fat everything, having alcohol in small amounts once a month, eating high protein bars and reduced calorie/smart portion foods, (attempting to) eat more fruits and veggies, drinking LOTS of water, exercising every day between 30 minutes (on really busy days) to an hour, getting at least 6 to 7 hours of sleep, taking vitamins and appetite surpressants (Slim Shots with my yogurt and pudding, twice a day), and keeping track of what I eat, portion controlling everything it seems. I'm getting very discouraged about my weight loss goal even though I'm doing the "right" things.

Ummm... I'm not sure that they are all the "right" things to be honest!!! Some of it is great, obviously, like the more exercise, more fruit & veg part for example. But eating "sugar free/fat free/reduced fat everything"... that means they're all processed right? And the appetite suppressants too... it just all sounds quite unnatural to me. I don't know anything about veganism but maybe even just choosing more natural foods and cutting out anything processed would be a good start!

Also, you may feel bad that you finished "last", but I gaurantee that some people quit or just chickened out. You finished ahead of all them WITH AN INJURY

Thanks guys you are probably right!!! I am starting to feel better about it now... now that I have gotten over the initial embarrassment of being last

I know it is all about competing against myself, rather than competing against anyone else - and one thing is for sure I will soon be able to KICK MY OWN ASS!!! Hahaha

So I just finished my first half-marathon! But I came last I obviously was not ready for it - training had been going good until about 4 weeks ago when I got injured and then I couldn't do very much for a while. I went to a physio who said it was a muscle tear and he did a massage and ultrasound which helped it to start healing but it was too little too late I think!

On the day I was in pain from the end of the first mile onwards - wasn't too bad to begin with and I was actually making good time, but around mile 8/9 everything else started to get tired too, the pain kept getting worse and eventually I had to start walking/running. By mile 12/13 I couldn't even run anymore and just walked the rest of the way In the last mile a cop even pulled over to see if I was ok but I just couldn't give up at that point.

Anyway I know I probably shouldn't be upset... but I really am!!! Everyone keeps saying "but you DID it, at least you finished it etc etc" but that doesn't make me feel any better At the moment I just feel like I need to go and do another race A.S.A.P. just to place anywhere but last... but part of me says that may not be the wisest decision!

Anyway, advice/other-race-disaster-stories welcome!
