Ah, thanks David. Yes, I'm in the UK, not the US. Another crippled Apple product for us it seems... :/

In case anyone is interested, the Nike kit works with the new Nano too. Shame the Nike/iTunes audio content is still 'coming soon' though

I've just invested in a new Nano and Nike fitness kit and so far it works like a dream. I was pretty disappointed that the workout audio content is still 'coming soon' in iTunes though so took a look around at other options.
I really like the idea of Lance Armstrong or someone like him, popping up and telling me my pace has slowed etc, and this is what the iTunes/Nike solution promises. So, this would be the ideal solution for me. Does anyone else know if this sort of content is available elsewhere? If not, what about products like podfitness.com - anyone have any experience of those? Would love to hear people's opinions/experiences/suggestions please! (also, maybe we should share our favourite workout playlists here too )

Devil! Thy name is fast food!
Diet & Nutrition Tips |
for me it's the definite 'quick fix' if I let myself get too hungry. So, I avoid that now wherever possible - and as a result I haven't had any fast food for ages.
I think it's a case of identifying your own 'call to action' over wanting fast food and then working to avoid that scenario. As a visitor to the US, I do find it really hard to get good food sometimes though - even some of the restaurants seem to server pretty unhealthy stuff (this isn't the same in the main coastal cities generally I guess). |

The menace of different scales
Motivation Tips |
Hey Nick - thanks for the reply. Yep, I know - it's impossible to gain that much in like 48 hours I reckon! Still, I really want to know which set of scales is correct. If the hotel scales are, then I have a very demoralising few weeks ahead

Modular approach for Traineo

i agree with this - 'mood' factor is pretty important if you refer back to your training logs much. I use Moodstats at the moment, from K10K.

Running Issues
Exercise & Training Tips |
it takes a while Will, to get used to the pounding. If you want to be into running for the long-term then you really really need to start off gently.
You may be fitter than this, but nevertheless maybe you should start by running/walking for the first few weeks. Start with a larger proportion of walking and gradually even it out until the emphasis is on running. Like I said, you may be fitter than this sort of regime requires but you have to get your body used to it too. For me, it started with a run/walk of 30 secs run followed by 2 mins walk and so on, for 20 mins total. After a few weeks, I was at 1min run/1 min walk for 30 mins total and then gradually increased to 5 mins run/1 min walk for 30 mins total. I'm heavy, and this starting practise saved me from any joint problems or shin splints too. Anyway, I hope you find what you're looking for in running.

Walking
Training Routines |
So, at the moment I'm trying to walk for at least 30 mins each day with regular 1.5 hour walks during the week too - all hilly.
In the past my motivation has been destroyed by doing too much too soon and not allowing my body to recover so I've decided to not do any weights or other exercise until I've kept the walking regime up for a month or so. Should I reconsider this and make time for weights now? |

I'm jealous that the US can get TV series from the itms! We still don't have access to that in the UK

Can't get off the sugar in my tea & my di
Diet & Nutrition Tips |
I used to have lots of sugar in my hot drinks too. I kicked it by reducing it slowly - it tastes horrible while you reduce though. The key for me, was every now and then (not too often though) to have a drink with the same amount of sugar as I used to have - then you'll find out the real meaning of disgusting! Everytime I did this, the reduced sugar drinks started tasting great so I could start reducing again.
Sweet hot drinks really make me wanna puke now - if I accidentally put too much sugar in a drink I simply can't drink it now. Bleh! The whole process didn't take long at all - a couple of weeks max... |

The menace of different scales
Motivation Tips |
So using my scales at home I've been tracking a steady (but slow) weight loss here on Traineo for a short while. Yesterday I flew into Austin for a conference and since I hadn't weighed myself for a few days I checked on the scales in the hotel bathroom - thinking that I could probably come on here and update with a little more loss...
The scales here, however, reported that I'd gained almost 20lbs from my last weigh-in at home in the UK. Obviously this can't be right - either my scales at home or the scales here are completely innacurate - but the effect was quite demoralising to be honest. I'm also unable to track my weight this week whilst I'm travelling (and for a lot of Sept) because despite which set of scales is right, the difference reported between them gives me no common ground to work from. So, the lesson here is to stick to one set of scales I guess - although I shall be seeking a 3rd opinion from somewhere just as soon as possible so I can establish whether my scales at home are at fault. |
