I have some very good sites that illustrate the correct form for some new and different exercises. these are listed as exercises for skiing but they are really just good, general exercises for overall fitness, as required to ski. http://www.fitskiing.com/Articles---Videos/Ski-Exercises.aspx
In the same way, the videos here are great if you are looking to mix things up. http://www.mountainathlete.com/page.php?page_ID=14. Again the focus is on outdoor sports but you need to be in just good overall shape to perform in the outdoors.

I use it because I love to ski, but it has lots of great all around exercises for general fitness, balance and stability that you can use for almost any sport or just to mix up your routine.
PS. these bosu ball exercises may look easy, but they are not..

I have been off the discussion for a while, but still listening to the podcast and still on my journey.
I started this with what I have been calling diet boot camp. I went on a medically supervized diet of about 1200 cals/day and lost 85 pounds. That is obviously not sustainable but it was very helpful as a method for breaking old habits. Since then I plateaued, so I started working with a personal trainer and dietician (one and the same person). She has been helpful in getting things jump started. Following the advice from the podcast of taking one week where I was "off" but not nuts also helped.
So here are my questions...
First, I had my annual physical a few weeks ago. My diet doc had suggested I have my testosterone checked when we discussed the issues around the plateau. The level was well below normal. I have noticed that my desire to do the mattress mambo has been down. Also, it takes me longer to recover from exercise - delayed onset muscle soreness lasts longer and comes on more frequently when I increase the amount of wieght I lift or change up exercises. I went from lunges to hack squats and my legs were sore for a week.
Could the extreme low calorie diet have caused the reduction in testosterone?
Is the lower testosterone contributing to the plateau of wieght loss? If so, how?
I'll be seeing an endrocronologist later this week. Any suggestions on what questions I should ask?

I must confess that I am a bit confused over advice to "feed the effort" I put into exercise vs. running a caloric deficit to loose fat.
I understand that caloric deficits are basic laws of thermodynamics. You need to burn more then you take in, and you make up the difference by burning fat.
I have always thought of "feeding the effort" as trying to balance what you burn with what you take in. For example, a Tour De France rider burns about 6000 kcal/day on a race day, so he should consume the same amount to feed the effort.
So how does one reconcile these?

To echo Tara, I live in Colorado where we also get some pretty spectacular thunderstorms. Every year people are killed or hurt really badly because they ignore a storm or think they can outrun one. That also does not mention the flash floods that can occur out here that I did not see when I lived back on the US east coast. These storms move very fast and are very dangerous. Get inside and stay safe.

Maggie that is very cool.
For me.. started at 52 inch waist, now at 40 and those are getting too loose
I can run again. Before it was way too hard on the knees
This weekend hiked 12 miles in Rocky Mountain National Park with roughly 1000 vertical feet of elevation gain (to just over 10K feet - above that was snow). No problem and only needed to break for scenery (SPECTACULAR) and lunch. Getting ready to climb a 14'er once the snow melts at that elevation.
If I hike 4 miles or bike for 50 minutes I feel like a wimp.

Abdreas - Try reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollin. Hopefully you can get it in Denmark or Amazon will ship it to you. His advice - "Eat real food, most of it from plants, not too much." I have always found that advice easier to follow when I have been in Europe then the USA. There is a much bigger emphasis on fresh local seasonal foods there.

Amie - I think that is true, but it may also be because riding outside imposes a natural high intensity interval training - you most likely will need to climb a hill, at least here in Colorado. Also, riding a bike inside is about as interesting as watching paint dry, but outside it is lots of fun, so you tend to extend the ride and do a bit more. Inside on machines I jump off the instant my time is up.

Let me start with saying that Mike Huckabee and I are about as far apart on the political spectrum as it is possible to get, however, when the man was a govenor, he managed to loose 100 pounds. Moreover the man is a politician from the South, and that means fund raising dinners and other events all of them involving "down home" cooking - think fried chicken, barbecue and sweet potato pie.
I think it is safe to say the a sitting govenor of any state - even Arkansas - will be a bit busier than most of the folks who have time to post on this forum. If he can find the time and ability to diet and exercise, anyone can.

This is an old thread but I'd like to add to it.
1. If it has a shelf life expectancy longer than my life expectancy, I do not eat it (e.g. Twinkies)
2. If it looks vaguly radioactive, I do not eat it (e.g. Cheetos, Dorittos, Red Bull, Mountain Dew)
3. If I get a whiff of BS then I do not buy it or eat it (e.g. a "serving" of Pam involves a spray lasting .333 seconds which is how they can claim that a product that is, in fact 100% fats has 0 fats in one serving, the magic of rounding down to the closest integer)
4. If translating the ingredient list involves the Chemical Rubber Company's Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (I may be dating myself there) or my college Organic Chemistry text, I do not eat it.
5. It is a diet and not a monastic order - so I splurge but only on the highest quality stuff once per week. You are satisfied with much less and the experience is so much better (compare chocolate from Ghirardelli with a cheaper brand, or good microbrews with cheap beer, for example).
6. When stressed out, reach for your mate instead of your plate.

Let me clear. I typically arrive late on a Sunday or take a 6 AM flight on Monday. Either way that day would be no exercise because I am either spending it on family stuff and then packing, getting to the airport, etc, or I am just exhausted from getting up at 3:30 AM to catch a 6 AM flight. Thursdays are shot because I need to get billable time finished before I leave. While I am there I do exercise at least 1.5 hours (1 hour weights and 30 minutes cardio) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, another hour Monday. Membership at 24 hour fitness is great as I can use gyms in almost every city I am sent to.
As for bringing equipment with me... treadmills don't fit in the overheads, though I bring sneakers and run.

Muscle mass is measured every week by the doctors office while you are on this diet. I just had blood work done and glucose levels were good.

Hello all
I started with traineo a few months back but never really got active. I am almost 51. I had been exercising steadily for a number of years and was getting nowhere, so I started with the Center For Medical Weight Loss. That program puts you on a 1200 cal/day diet and encourages lifestyle change through counseling sessions. Appetite is suppressed with a prescription appetite suppressant. Since 1 November of last year I have lost 78 pounds with minimal loss of muscle mass. I did take diet breaks in there for vacations. I tried to continue loosing with "normal food" however, my job requires 100% travel and it is very difficult to control food under those circumstances. Flight schedules interfere with my ability to exercise as well. I only managed to loose 1 pound in the last 4 weeks I spent on the road. That is one reason I am looking for a new job that does not require travel.
Anyway I could use some help here. I went back on the 1200 cal/day diet with the appetite suppressant, but the effects of the appetite suppressant wear off over time, and mine no longer work. I set a fitness goal for myself of climbing a mountain higher than 14K feet (I live in Colorado) this summer, so I'll be doing lots of cardio to get where the air is thin. I find I bonk after 45 minutes of cardio with a heart rate of about 141 bpm with this diet. I could use some help finding a diet that works and will support more extensive cardio without leaving me a very grouchy person because I am always so hungry. I would love to join a mutual motivation group if there are any out there.

I have been listening to the podcast for some time and I must say that I really enjoy it. My name is Mike. I am a 50 year old guy who has recently lost 78 pounds under a doctor's supervision using a diet from the Center For Medical Weight Loss. I have another 30 to go. I have been on a plateau for a few weeks now and it has been frustrating but I think I have broken through that plateau this week. I am down a few pounds on the bathroom scale. My official weigh in is Friday.

I listened to the Fat2Fit podcast on the book "Eat This, Not That" and was very surprised at hos counter-intuitive some of the choices are (e.g. Chicken Ceasar Wraps at one place have higher calories then plain Chicken sandwiches).
I have lost weight on business travel before, but I was following a very strict medically supervized diet at the time. It was, basically, "here is your food, just eat this" and I was limited to 1200 cals/day. I am reluctant to go back to this approach, but how does one eat when you are staying in a hotel and have almost no control over the ingredients that go into your food? Do I need to lug a copy of "Eat This, Not That" all across the Western USA?
I am about to start a project that will have me flying to Silicon Valley every week. Any tips on how I can stay on track while staying in a hotel are appreciated.
