6 weeks in to P90X

Thanks all

I am very excited about how things have gone. It's been tough sticking to the workout program. I'm in the middle of planning a wedding (19 days away!!!!!) and working full time and I'm in graduate school, so having at least an hour a day devoted to working out has been tough. However, I've gotten to the point where I notice that I'm not in a very good mood if I DON'T work out for the day, so my body is adapting nicely.

Elizabeth - yeah, I noticed that about my posture, too! I think in the first picture I was very uncomfortable with getting my picture taken. Then, in the second picture, I had just gotten done with 90 minutes of yoga so I felt very tall.

Also, I apologize about the size differences of the pictures, they are not to scale. But you get the idea!

Hi all! I just wanted to share my weight loss progress with everyone! I started at 204.4 lbs. The past 6 weeks I have been doing the P90X lean program. So far it is going great. I am feeling a major upswing in my level of fitness, so the program is not just making me lose weight, it is making my body plenty healthier. Anyway, today is day 42, and I am down to 192 lbs.

I was hoping to get more of a reduction in the love handles, but I did lose quite a bit of belly, so that makes me happy
How many calories should I consume?
Diet & Nutrition Tips

I think that formula is woman-specific. I found this formula for men to calculate their BMR:

66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )

Using that I get 2062.15
Multiplying my weight by 13 gives me 2665
Using your formula gives me 1748

Interesting range, huh?

I'm just going to assume my BMR is around 2000 kcal and call it a day!

Has anybody tried using a "fitness orb" (body ball, exercise ball, etc.) instead of an office chair? If so, does it really live up to the hype and provide a constant stream of light core exercise?
What Was Your "Oh, Crap!" Moment?
Motivation Tips

I've had plenty of "Oh, crap!" moments, but I had another one yesterday (and this one was a BIG one).

I have a new employer who told us that as representatives of the company they will check our Facebook profiles to make sure that we are not doing anything inappropriate. Because I know my friends don't always have the best tact, I thought I would go through all of my tagged pictures to make sure there aren't any of me that could be interpreted negatively (Downing shots, inappropriate hand gestures, etc).

As I was going back I saw two pictures right next to each other that were taken years apart. The first one was me right out of high school - 165 lbs, tan, in great shape. The second one was Christmas last year - 205 lbs, nasty beard, no muscle to speak of.

It was jarring to see the before and after right next to each other. So, I downloaded those two pics, put them next to each other in one image and made it my desktop background. It is very motivating to have that staring me in the face every day.

Does switching from Diet soda to water help lose weight?
Diet & Nutrition Tips
Posted: June 24, 2010
I have heard that some of the compounds in diet soda actually inhibit weight loss in the body directly. Even though it's 0 calories, it will tell your body to hold on to your fat stores.

However, as you can probably tell, I am in no way an expert on the subject. Everything I said is hearsay, and should be taken with a grain of salt

First mountain bike race!

Thanks for the input everyone! I definitely noticed that mountain biking is way more upper-body intensive. My back and arms were killing me after my first few training runs. The first race I did wasn't so much enduro-heavy because it was only about 10 miles. My biggest problem was technique because it was single track, and I did fall off more than once

I do like the idea of training just on the bike, because that's a lot more fun than weight training!

I participated in a mountain bike race! I'm a big music nerd that hasn't done much in the way of competitive sports, so this was a big step forward for me.

I think I want to get serious and start racing regularly, perhaps join a team. However, I am a little "under-knowledgeable" as how to start training my body to get the best results out there. I know I need to start weight training, and I need to simply get out on the bike as much as possible, but I think I need to find more pointed goals than that.

Sooooooooo, are there any competitive mountain bikers on here? If so, do you have any tried and true fitness regiments that have helped you achieve success?

Thanks in advance!

Am I wasting my time lifting weights while trying to lose weight
Exercise & Training Tips

Absolutely not a waste of time. In fact, I'd almost argue that it is more of a waste of time to not lift weights while trying to lose weight. A few years ago I went on a weight loss kick where I was doing a ton of weight lifting and a ton of cardio at the same time. My weight dropped very steadily and very quickly. I felt great.

About a year ago I went on another of these weight loss kicks and focused almost 100% on cardio. My weight dropped much slower, I didn't feel as satisfied after workouts, and I didn't feel like I was actually getting in better shape.

Short answer, weight lifting is an important part of any fitness regime.

Now, if you wanted to build mega-muscle (like body builder muscle), then you would need a calorie surplus from tons of protein and need to be lifting hours a day. Other than that, you're golden.

We want to lose weight and get in shape so we can live longer lives. But what is the point of living a long life if you don't allow yourself to enjoy it?

I'm glad you had fun!
