I still have a ways to go. But we are so set on Disneyworld. Sitting around is boring. I want fun and childlike activities. Its the best way to start the part of our lives.
I once interviewed this educator and she said something that I will never forget.... "dont forget how to be child, it's hard to come back once you've lost it. If you ever watch a small child they can be happy doing nothing, creating fun and spontaneity from within their minds in whatever situation they are in. As adults we tend to lose that part of ourselves and never get it back."

I DONT REMEMBER THE BRAND OR NAME BUT IT WILL SAY THAT IT WILL CALCULATE DISTANCE ON THE PACKAGE. YOU NEED TO SET YOUR STRIDE LENGTH TO GET A SOMEWHAT ACCURATE MEASUREMENT. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU MAY NOT HAVE SET THAT. HOWEVER ITS NOT THE DISTANCE YOU ARE GOING FOR ITS THE NUMBER OF STEPS.

Grab yourself a pedometer and try the 10,000 steps a day. It gives you an easy tangible goal and you'll see how easy it is to accomplish. I would at times find myself 2000 steps shy and just started walking in circles in the mall to get it to the goal. 10,000 really isnt that much its about 2 miles with my strides.
good luck in your journey

Thanks Nate and Britt for your insight.
That 350 could be spent on a gym membership. I know they were introduced to it by a friend who is following the program.(and probably selling it too). All over the net you can read success stories and raves about the product. I'm weary of those kinds of things because theya re easily simple marketing ploy websites to help promote the vendor.
When he first explained it to me...it did sound like a high fiber and high protein diet. The fact the word diet in there makes me cringe. I've managed to lose and maintain my weight for over 5 years now and the only way to accomplish that was to change my lifestyle completely without really introducing anything new except exercise. I really Just took out stuff i didnt need. It actually made my wallet heavier. Go figure.
Like you said "fewer calories" + more excercise = weight loss.
Now if only "healthy Mentality" could be included in that equation.

i have the sandisk sansa e240 its the 2 gig on. Its great. It also has a slot for a micro sd card. So i load my workout song separately on that card. It also has an FM tuner which i find using more often than music. I listen to talk radio while doing the cardio and put the tunes in for the weight training. Listening to people talk makes time go by much faster.

Since Joining Traineo if lost only 10 lbs. In the past 4 years ive 40 altogether. Many People here will tell you that slow is the better way to go. I've slowly been losing weight and Its totally manageable. Im sad. I dont starve myself. I make sure that it doesnt feel like a battle. Its just a mental shift of thinking.
You body will learn how to cope with the changes slowly. Think of it like studying for test. Your brain will remember things. If you give your brain extra time and you study effeciently you will most likely perform better on the test. If you were to cram a whole semester's worth of studying into a week studyfest well we know how that can be. Sure you will learn it, but are you studying to get a good grade on the final or so that you can use it later on in life.

This OWWB idea is pretty cool. I tell people about it because its on my myspace page and people ask. They always chuckle usually with support. I just read your past 2 email including this one, just never got around to responding back.
Here's my story.
Think back to a time where PBS ruled your world. Sesame street, Mr Rodgers, Square One and the likes were included in my line up. I was glued to the tv. This was around 3 grade and where the carnage began. All summer i sat in front of a tv and watched, and ate and watched and ate. Slowly gaining weight i never thought anything of it. Sooner than later i turned into the husky pants boy, at school, at home, at parties, everywhere.
This was all triggered by mostly by me but my family had quite a bit to do with it. Growing up Filipino in the states, we were riddled by the comments like, finish your food, your cousins back home dont have anything to eat. And it sure looked like it, by the fact that we were always sending care packages back home full of SPAM, coffee and candy. "Finish your food." The most dangerous words an inactive child can hear, and probably the most difficult for me to forget. Year after year i slowly gained weight as all children do growing up, but mine was jump started with bad habits and junk food. Fast forward to the end of high school, still the big guy in the class, althought there were some bigger than me, the lack of P.E. in the curriculum didnt help.
Lack of physical activity plagued me once again and slowly gained weight year after year, more due to the fact that i ate whatever i felt like eating. I would still hear those words "finish your food" inside and i would always do so. Never taking into regards the portions I was getting, i would always finish whatever it had on my plate.
I think my weight peaked at 290lbs around 1999 or 2000.
I told myself im tired of this and started to change the way i think. It was a hard road, nonetheless needed to be done. Here was my plan. This is a collection of my rules I have come up with or found trolling the internet.
1) Dont lose weight, just be more healthy.
2) Eat whatever you want, just know what you are eating, what it contains and what its going to do to your body.
3) Something is better than nothing. This applies to all aspects of getting healthy. Eating, Excersing, Rewards, snacks, junk food, etc.
4) Know proper portion size.
5) Eat only half of whats on your Plate.
6) Share a meal with someone if you can.
7) Walk whenever you can. Stairs, Parking Lot, etc.
8) Nothing should be forbidden to eat. Just have it in moderation.
9) Buffets generally are bad. But if you must then go with a lot of self control. More than normal.
10) Tell everyone what your are doing once people notice some weight changes, especially family. They are the hardest to convince, and they will be the first to abondon you once you fall.
11) Weightloss is a side effect of all these permanent lifestlye changes.
12) It's going to take time
Thats my journey in a nutshell. Ive lost 40 lbs. so far. Since ive joined traineo Ive signed up a number of people and tell everyone about it. Lost 9 lbs since joining traineo and more inches than ever. Ive joined a gym, got the blessing and approval of my plan from my doctor and am well on way to the sub 200 lbs zone. Final Goal is sub 200lbs in 3 years close to my wedding day whenever we pick a day, but somewhere around there.

Be sure to tell yourself that you didnt feel good that day. After doing that a couple of times you can ask yourself...now why do i want to feel like that again? hmm may be i should do that....ok just a little bite and that will be better than no bite at all.

I went through the same bout with my parents. When i first started cutting my food intake, my mom would start putting more food on plate thinking i didnt have enough to eat. I just didnt eat it. Well eventually they got the hint and the amazing thing is that they dont eat that much now. My transformation is slowly transforming the others around me that were just like your family, they questioned and sneered but latered joined in.

Jeremiah, all those things have outside forces in control. You may or may not have influence of how the forces operate, but your workout schedule is all you. Im just starting and 8 weeks in, ive been constistantly been going 4-5 times a week to the gym. I give myself one hour for the day. One hour of me time when i have total control of what is going to happen. If i want more then i will decide if i can or not, but that first hour is mine. You keep that in your control and dont let other decide whether you go or not. If someone needs your attention you schedule them after your time. Im sure you are the kind of person that will move something in your schedule to aid someone else. Its now time for others to do that for you.
Another thing that works is pick a start over day of the week and pick an activity to do on that day. If you week goes bad, you know that on that day your week will start all over and you will begin with something great.
I use singing at church. Ive been singing for over 12 years and I use my sundays as my starting point. No matter what happens during the week i know for sure on suday i will sing and start an all new week and what ever happened before is done with.
hope that helps

Sue, i was in your arena. All my life since about 3rd great ive been on the heavy side. Im 28 now. 4 years ago i decided i need a lifestyle change. I never used the word diet. I'm never on a diet. Diets fail. Lifestyle changes are permanent. They are things that take time. Time to break all the bad habits that you have accumulated over (in your case) 16 years. It took you 16 years to get there and will take time to get where you want to be.
In 4 years I've lost 40 lbs, and it has stayed off, only fluctuating 5lbs or so over the years depending on the time of year. I didnt do anything strenuous. I didnt join a gym. There was no magical diet plan...and i didnt do it alone.
My plan was:
1. every time i ate something, ask myself is this good for me? You have to listen to yourself and tell yourself the truth. Telling yourself i know its not isnt enough. You have to realize what lying does.
2. Learn what the correct food portion size is. I learned this in a nutrition class in college. You will be surprise at how little food we require. If you ever to a high class restaurant you will notice how small food portions are. Those are pretty close to what you want.
3. Never deprive yourself. You will make yourself sad and depressed because you arent eating the things you love to eat. GO EAT THEM. Just have a taste. You're just starting out. Listen to your body and and over time it will tell you what it does and does not like. (See item number 1)
4. When eating out share with someone. If you are alone, pack half togo right away...no matter what it is...Save the other half for lunch(and save money) the next day or give it to a homeless person.
5. My only excercise was walking. Grab a pedometer. Goal 10,000 steps a day.
6. Tell everyone what you are doing. I started at home. Told my parents and now they dont eat as much. My dad and I go eat at Denny's sometimes and buy one grand slam split it and still have food togo. I used to be able to eat the whole thing. No watching someone eat that makes me sick.
7. Get rid of your big clothes. If you dont keep your big clothes you have nothing to go back to.
4 years later ive maintained the weight loss and now have a goal of getting under 200 lbs. Im 5'11" and have a big frame and I havent been under 200 since jr high. I've finally joined a gym with your same motivation, pay the high premium and you had better go otherwise you are wasting money.
Good luck on your journey and welcome to traineo community

4 years ago a made a conscious decision just like yours. i started walking and changed my eating habits. i managed to keep it off, only gaining 5 lbs off and on during the holidays. One of the main things i did was cut my food intake in half. When you go to eat, put half in a togo container right away, and eat slowly. it takes anywhere from 12-15 minutes for your brain to register that you are eating. Once that kicks in you wont be as hungry and you will can eat less. Just listen to your body, it will tell you things. When you are hungry, how hungry you are, how much you can excersise, etc.
Im new to traineo too and love it.
keep it up and good luck

I LOST 40 LBS with a diet change alone. Now that i leveled off and have maintained my weight for about 3 years i just joined a gym and started working out. I feel great. In my previous post i mentioned about the not losing weight but losing inches syndrome. It does get discouraging when you weigh yourself and it still the same after all the work that has gone into your transformation.
Everyone says the same thing. Muscle weighs more...and as amanda put no it does not.
I started telling people that ive been going to the gym and their first reaction is ....yea you look like you've lost weight... and i say thank you... thats what i use as motivation and encouragement. Start telling people what you are doing, not to brag about it, i use the words..im just getting more healthy... it gets positive reaction and sometimes it gets them thinking too...
keep going. we're all here for support.

Very little weight loss according the mr. scale bu
Motivation Tips

i usually start with a 10 min stretch, 20 min run, and 30 minute circuit weight training. i try and keep it under an hour so that im not consumed with working out. i just want it to be part of my schedule.
things i do notice is an increase of energy level during the day at work.
falling asleep earlier in the evening. im hungry more often. i dont feel good if i eat junk. my arms are smaller. my shoulders are getting bigger.
so with the hungry more often how should i change my eating habits. i eat 3 meals a day. I cut my food intake a long time ago so for the past couple of years ive been consuming just about my required daily amount which is why i have gained very little weight if any in the past 3-4 years.
4 years ago around Lent seson i cut most sugar, most fast food trips, regular soda and most junk food. i slowly lost 40 lbs and have maintained it. for my meals i decided to only eat half of whatever it was that i ordered and i started giving the left over half to the local homeless guy. this became part of my lifestyle and i managed to keep it up for the most part.

Ok so i weigh myself everyday before working out. Ive only lost about 2 lbs. Ive been going to the gym 4-5 days a week consistantly for about a month and a half from an hour-2 hours. I started with just weight training but added running about 4 weeks ago along with weight training.
the scale shows my daily up and down but its not showing the weight loss. the good thing is i didnt join the gym to lose weight. it was more of a lifestlye change so it doesnt bother me that much. i do see it in my clothes and i think i need a new belt...yay!
words of encouragement are greatly appreciated.
thanks
