Just a quick request to think about reporting different kinds of information on the graphs. Some sort of moving average would really help.

Also, as requested elsewhere in the forums, an "I did not work out today" button would be appreciated too. Don't want to get credit for days when I'm lazy ;)

training for field sports
Training Routines
Posted: August 31, 2006
Hello! I am currently working on improving my overall level of fitness, with an eye toward being more competitive on the ultimate frisbee field. If I get leaner in the process, all the better.

While playing ultimate, it seems to me that cardiovascular fitness is very important, as games can last a while. Speed, agility, and jumping ability also count for a lot since the game basically revolves around sprinting in the open field, quick changes of direction, and leaping to snatch the disc out of the air. Core strength and upper body strength also come into play when you're trying to make long passes down the field, and in terms of avoiding injury on contact with the ground after diving catches.

Do any of you traineo folk have experience training for field sports (ultimate, soccer, rugby, etc)? What workout routines do you follow to get the right balance of endurance and explosiveness? Do you have different routines for off-season/pre-season/in-season training?

I've known several ultimate players who have said that plyometric training can be great for adding power to your running and jumping, but I've also heard that the training can be really hard on your body (especially knees). Any experience with plyos around here? Are plyometric training and traditional weight training complementary? How should they be combined in a workout routine: plyos and lifting during a single workout, or alternating days during the week, or should they not be combined at all?

Thanks for any help,

Training Routines

Hello! I found this article online a while ago and it stuck out to me as the sort of workout I might like to try. I like the focus on large muscle groups instead of on isolation exercises.

What do other traineo folks think of the routine suggested in the article?

I have a fair amount of experience lifting (so, for example, I am confident that I can use correct form for the dead lifts), but I have not been in the weight room for about 18 months. Do you think this program would be a reasonable one to start with as I resume my weight training? Are there other workouts you would suggest?

Thanks for any comments,

I'd like to see more sensitive measures for the trend lines than connecting the first and last data points (in the case of weight measurements) or reporting the overall average (in the case of diet and calories burned working out).

I'd be especially interested in seeing an exponentially weighted moving average reported on the weight chart. The hacker's diet publishes a series of spreadsheets that demonstrate the use of this technique, and also give justifications for using it. Their info can be found here: URL.

Even just using simple linear regression for the weight trend would be better than the end-to-end line that is shown now.

Thanks so much for all of the great features on the site, can't wait to see what improvements are in store!
