Why it works: you're using the same muscles (albeit only slightly different) when you lower yourself that you do to raise yourself so you'll be strengthening those muscles. Other exercises (bench press, etc.) can help with that, but ultimately if your goal is to do pushups, you need to be doing pushups as the motion/muscles that are used are going to be slightly different than in any other exercise. Once you're strong enough to do "proper" pushups, even just 3-4 GOOD ones, then you can drop the negative resistance reps and just do those, as that is going to be the BEST way to develop strength and ability. Your goal isn't to do a LOT if you want to get strong(er), it's to do them right (typically when you're training for strength you want to only be able to do 4-8 reps of whatever weight you're lifting, if you can do more than it's too light and you really won't be getting stronger as fast as you could be).

thanks for that tip! i have the weakest arms in the world (seriously, it's embarrassing) so i'm going to try this method.

I used to use the Nike + and I really loved it. I stopped using it so much after awhile but still use it when i run outside occasionally to check my mileage. It's a cool tool to have.

When your body is hungry it's sending a signal you shouldn't ignore; don't gorge yourself right before going to sleep, but going to sleep hungry is possibly just as bad.

I completely agree with this. It doesn't matter when you eat as much as WHAT you eat and how much.

Squatting to a box really helps me, I always have to modify my squats in some way. I also agree with #7, cutting out those foods will shed weight quickly but I can't give them up 100%.

By the way, I saw you're in Arlington - I workout in Tysons. We're neighbors!

I feel like the best recipe for a fit body is 90% diet, 10% exercise. You eat a lot more often than you exercise so it requires more focus and will-power. Although, exercise is what will keep you from being "skinny fat" in the end.

I strongly agree with number 3 - my friends are always saying "I wish I could workout but I don't have time" meanwhile I'm dragging my ass out of bed at 6 AM and hitting the gym daily. There are 24 hours in a day, you can make time. Even just getting up early and going for a thirty minute jog is a good start.

Also, number 9 is very true. You can't go on a fad diet, lose 15 lbs, go back to eating normally and keep the weight off. You have to eat clean and exercise regularly for life.
Not particularly a clean eater but...

Like everyone else said, I'm sure he's burns off all those calories. He's probably ravenous all the time. I wish I could eat 12,000 calories a day and be that lean though!

i just read a study on cereal - apparently, nutritionists lately have been raving that if you could only eat two things for the rest of your life it would be cereal and lowfat milk.

so i would say ALWAYS keep a healthy cereal (make sure it has a decent amount of fiber and less than 10g sugar) and some fatfree or reduced fat milk. these will keep you full on days you're out of groceries and can't afford to buy more.

do you have a toaster oven? whole wheat toast and peanut butter is the best snack and full of fiber + protein.

you can also make a protein shake before work and sip on it in the morning, which will keep you full until lunch, so you only have to bring a snack for the afternoon.
