New bike! New goals!

Congrats on the new bike. I have been riding about a year and a half and it has completely changed my life. Like you, I just got a new bike. Mine is a 2007 Kuota Kharma with Shimano 105 ten speed with the compact crankset. It is something I have always dreamed of getting and am more then ever dedicated to riding and getting in shape.

Juan, I understand what you are saying but I think you might be putting to much emphasis on your weight loss. Look at the big picture. Look where you have come from. Your health is so much better and you continue to take care of yourself by working out. The weight will come off. I promise. It just takes time. And so what if it takes six months or five years. You are in this for the long haul. I once read something that really changed the way I look at myself and what I am doing. It said "Working out and eating right is for my physical and mental health. The weight loss is just an added benefit". I truly believe this.

Also, it takes a while for your bottom to get used to sitting on the seat. The first time I started riding it took almost two weeks for me to get used to sitting on the seat. It hurt so bad I would have to lift up when I rode to ease the pain. That usually goes away and things get much better. Once you get past that part then you can start trying to find a seat if the one you are using is still uncomfortable.

I refuse to get into this debate but I want to say what low carb has done for me. I have lost 57lbs since June. I had to be taken off all my Diabetes medicine. All my blood tests are below normal including my cholesterol. My blood pressure is normal; down from 190/93. I feel great. I ride long distances on my bicycle and I don't have trouble with bonking. I don't know if I can stick with it or not but I am sure as hell going to try.

This is a really dumb question but how do I post comments in the comments section on my page? I know it can be done as I have seen others do it. But for the life of me I can't figure it out.

As said the main thing is to find something you like. If you don't like it you won't stay with it. I have become completely addicted to riding a bike. I have been riding now for well over a year and don't see any reason to stop. I read an article the other day that the main thing is taking care of your body. Eating right and exercising should be the main focus and first most. Weight loss is just an added bonus.
Winter Riding

Mike,

Have you tried arm warmers? I wear a long sleeve base layer then pull my arm warmers over that. I then wear a short sleeve jersey if it is real cold and my windbreaker. The arm warmers allow me to adjust my arm temp separate from my core temp. In your case you could wear a long sleeve jersey over the arm warmers. That way your arms have two layers but your core only has one. You then could use the zipper on the jersey to regulate your core temp. Hope some of this might help you.

I missed the part where you asked how and what we ride. I have a 2005 Specialized Allez Sport Triple road bike. I put about 1500 mile on it so far this year. My main abjective this winter is to ride as long as I can outside. I have a trainer but would much rather be on the road. I also have a 2006 Raliegh Mojave 8.0 moutain bike but I don't ride it that much. I prefer the speed of the road bike.

Hey Mark, You will be surprised how fast you will wear out that tire on the trainer. The problem is that the tire will build up a lot of heat. If you have a wall behind your bike you would see little bits of rubber splattered all over it after each ride. When the winter comes I always put an old tire on the back so I don't ruin my good tire. I learned this the hard way. You might also find different ways to entertain yourself during your rides like watching TV or listeing to some music. Riding a trainer will get very boring very fast. Good luck and have fun.

You do need to see a doctor but have you tried just riding on the street and keeping up a pretty good spin? This is normally easier on the knees and may allow you to ride. You might also try searching Google for bike fit suggestions to make sure your bike is setup right for you. I know if I get my seat to high or to low it can cause me knee problems.

I am the same way as Jen. I let myself eat all the veggies I want but stay away from the starchy and high carb veggies because I am on a low carb lifestyle.

I plan on getting up early and going for a ride. I hope to get in about thirty miles. That should set the day. As far as food goes, I plan on pretty much sticking to what I do everyday. I am on low carb so I plan on keeping it that way and no desert or maybe something low carb. I am also Type II Diabetic and I have to make sure I take care of that foremost. I control it solely by diet and exercise. Sometimes it is the thought of the Diabetes getting out of control that keeps me in control.

I can see both sides of this but for me sometimes just buying something is enough to keep me motivated. I do a lot of road bicycling and as you can imagine things aren't cheap. But I look at it as an investment in my health and my wife does to. She never gripes about something I buy as long as I am riding the bike. Sometimes I get a little lazy and not ride as much or find excuses not to ride and going out and buying something new will motivate me to get me back on the bike. It sounds silly but for me it works.

The other thing I don't understanf from the comments made is why would you want to go off something that is working for you. This can be said of any eating plan. The low carb is working for me and controlling my Diabetes with no medication. I have lost 49lbs since mid June and am on no medication for anything. My Diabetes is in check and all my tests are normal or below. I am the healthiest I have ever been and I feel fantastic. Why would I want to try something different when I reach my goal? The old way of eating didn't work before, why would I all of a sudden think it would work when I have lost all my weight.

I agree with K M. Don't try to make up for it tomorrow. If you did try you might find yourself in the same boat by getting too hungry. What happened today is today. Tomorrow is a new day and a clean slate. Keep up the good job.

Renuka,

You are probably right. Your diet and exercise regimen has probably kept the Diabetes at bay. It may just be a genetic thing and out of your control. Good luck and be sure to follow your Dr.'s advice. Keep us updated on your progress.

I always remember this. It is not about the pounds. It is all about being physically fit and having a healthy body. It's about feeling good about what you are doing and the steps you are taking to accomplish it. The pounds are secondary and an added bonus. Keep up the great job.

I think sometimes you have no control over this. Your diet seems real good and I really don't know how you could improve it much. You don't say how much you exercise. Exercise plays a big part in keeping your glucose levels good. I am Type II Diabetic. As of this morning I have lost 46lbs. I am a low carb lifestyle and I ride my bike 5-6 days a week about a hour at a time. I am on no medication and all my tests are normal or below. I have dropped my glucose level from low 300's down to the mid 80's. My blood pressure went from 190/92 to normal ranges. The exercise helps your body manage glucose levels. I would suggest you talk to a nutritionist to see if any changes can be made to your diet and start an exercise plan that fits you. The key to exercise is finding something you like. Makes it much easier to stick to in the long run.

I wasn't sure where to post this so it got posted in a couple of different subforums. I apologize and will try to research exactly where to post my questions and feedback next time. Is there any way in the future you might be able to add an option to include certain custom logs in our motivator reports. I have two custom logs: one for cycling mileage and the other for my blood glucose readings. I would love to include them in my motivator reports as I get asked all the time what my blood sugar is running and how much have I been riding. I know some people may not want to include certain custom logs so having the option to include certain ones would be cool. Thanks

Maybe that is from the body working harder to replace the blood or working harder while it replaces the blood.

I love the custom logs. I track my bicycle mileage and my daily blood glucose readings. What I would like would be a way for my custom logs to be included with my motivator reports. For me my blood glucose is very important and the one question I usually get asked is "How is your blood sugar?". Other then this I have been very happy with the site and the simplicity of it.

I also weigh daily. I think this also allows you to learn more about how your body reacts to different things. I have also read many articles that say people who weigh daily are more apt to keep the weight off. I guess we will see.

I just found this site and it is awesome. It's hard to believe that with all the features and support that it is all free. Thanks so much for providing an awesome tool. This will help immensely in my monitoring of my health. I was able to add a custom log to monitor my blood glucose levels which will help manage my Type II Diabetes as well as my weight and fitness levels. Thank you so much
