I'm a chef, but not profesionally. I am an IT Anaylst and due to the multitasking enviroment, I get over stimulated (other IT workers, will agree), and its hard to fall asleep, I wake up throughout the night due to the pain of my shoulder...

Its actually a documented study done on IT workers about the sleep not being solid... but I cant find the article, or I would have posted it.

But I have worked in the food business for about 10 years before this, and I did carry a pager and answer my phone at all hours of the night.. strangely I slept alot better then. Hmmmm...

Wow.. its not good, but comforting (?) tohear Im not the only one that doesnt get any sleep. My shoulder injury and my job causes interrupted sleep, i get up about 6 times a night, I frequently see every hour pass on the clock...

goto sleep at about 11:30, dont fall asleep till about 12:30, wake up about 1:40, 2:30, 3:45, 4:50, 5:55, alarm goes off at 6:30 press snooze, and get up right before it goes off at 6:40...

But to answer the question, I think if you start hurting too much when you workout, lessen the workout so the sleep your getting can be appropiate to your workout. And dont worry being a father myself, the sleep comes back, it feels like it takes forever while its happening, but its hard to even remember once its over

Hey everyone, when doing the ultra low carb, high protien diet I know you should shock your system (with carbs) every once in a while. How often and how much should you shock it?

I have done it in the past, and noticed the intake of sugars and carbs all of sudden had quite the impact on my mood... very lethargic, very flushed.

Now i must mention, I am not a sugary eater (occasionally once a month or so, i'll crave some chocolate, but thats really the extent) to begin with so when I do lo carb, i pretty much cut all sugar out. This has only a positive effect on my mood, and the way i feel physically. So i understand to a point why the sudden intake of sugar/carbs have that effect, my question is about how often is this good for me, and to what extent should i take it?

Also, I wanted to mention that for you internet sleuth types, before someone else finds it, I do a podcast on the 2GuysTalking network. The podcast is a cooking show, and its not healthy food... I am a chef, and for the past 2 months, I havent been able to eat my own food. In fact the show is called "The UnVegan, never trust a skinny chef", but I hope to be the ultimate hypocrite...

And if you know of this, I do another podcast, but it has NOTHING to do with food.

I hope that didnt come off as spam, I really just want to put it out there before someone else finds out about it. I have had a few stalkers that have sone some vindictive campaigns on me, so I just wanted to try to avoid that.

But I really want reponses to the questions about the diet.

Thanks !!! (I Love this Place)

I have been for the last 5 days, not eating any bread, rice, fruit, sugar as much as possible.

Now I been eating salads(with meat) for lunch and dinner, and usually a good portion of eggs with meat or cheese for breakfast..

I FEEL GREAT, excpet for about 3 hours yesterday when i missed my snack between lunch and dinner. I was REAL hungry, but as soon as I ate i felt normal again.

I have been working out, about 4 days on, one day off, 4days on, etc..

Some indications around here tell me that it might be bad for me to be doing the 'Atkins' diet...

I plan on shocking my system once every 2 weeks with one day of normal eating... where i will have some bread or rice and maybe even a dessert, then back on track for 2 weeks.

Like I said I feel great, the weight is starting to come off...

Am I on the right track?

ok im feeling like the deffensive little addict in his corner with the crack pipe now.

Eric, thank you for the tips on weight training. I can not do weights until i get to a more workable weight and MY DR clears for me for it. I have shoulder injury, that frankly just walking can adgiate...

I do drink coffee straigh, Im actually a certified coffee taster (my former life-work was coffee.. not starbucks but a big one), but I just dont digg a cup of coffee in the morning, occasionally in the mid afternoon, but rarely. I am much more tea drinker, in fact i am a tea freak...

The energy drink i drink is sugar free only has about 3 carbs, and is full of herbs, taurine, and equal to about a good 12 oz cofee in caffeine. All in all, except for the sodium (which according to my doctor isnt an issue for me) and CO2, seems to have good ingredients.

My sons trains at Gracie Jiu Jitsu, alot of the trainers, and students use xyncience, whcich seems to be a new thing, and they are in great shape you ng and old.

I dont want to be argumentative, I just want to know (data, articles, or science) behind these finding...

OK Im glad I got respones, but I am not sure I got throught that I am using the diet version so the sugar is not a problem... and yes i read the label to isure that...

So my question is, is there any facts behind the part about being bad for your teeth, if so wher ecan i find it?

And is it any diffrent than drinking coffee in the morning?

Eric, Gatorade has lots of sugar from what I understand, and why is it conterintutive to drink an energy drink in the morning?

I am in the mode of losing weight not weight training, and i dont have an enregy problem when i work out, just in the morning (i ususally workout after work in the evening).

OK OK OK I am the bringer of bad news... I PERSONALLY have about 4 years in the smoothie/juice business. I do not currently work for the big guy (but did for 2 years) , but a very large smoothie chain.

For the most part, commercial made smoothies ARE NOT GOOD FOR YOU.

Alot of sugar, hell at one time there was vanilla ice cream in one. They have since replaced using mostly a "non fat" frozen yogurt, but dont let that fool you. This is the dirty secret the smoothie business will be dealing with soon.

Now of course allthis information is out there, but really very few people read this info. If you DO AS THEY INTENDED and have a smoothie instead of a meal, with a regular exercise plan, they will only contribute to your waist line...

Most people, remember I saw the customers, day in and day out... DO NOT REALIZE the amount of sugar and calories in a smoothie.

There is a regularly sold smoothie, made with peanut butter, that made as is off the menu ready to go tops 1000 calories in a 24 oz size. This is marketed as 'healthy', and it is not...

The smoothie described above is healthy, but is not typical of a smoothie in a smoothie shop... there is alot of sherbert and frozen dairy going into one 24 ox size drink... the common recipe is

8-12oz CONCETRATED SUGAR SWEETENED JUICE

2-3 4OZ SCOOPS Froazen Dairy (usually sweetened with WHITE PROCESSED SUGAR)

2-3 2.5OZ scoops of frozen fruit(thats thepart thats good for you)

Now there are exceptions on the menu, but i can tell you with 100% assusrance those are not the best sellers, nor are they first on the menu (or even promiently displayed)...

If yougo to a juice bar, stick with fresh juice, wheatgrass, at least you know what your getting...

Whats the general feelings on energy drinks? I drink a DIET Rockstar like 5 to 6 times a week in the morning. The rest of the day I drink lots of water, averaging about 75oz a day. Occasionally like once or twice a month I'll have a diet soda, and usually order unsweetened ice tea with lunch or dinner, (I am a Tea superfreak, I know what tea is good for, no need to preach on that).. but other than that I drink alot of water...

Is there apaticular energy drink that is better than others? Or is there some magic poison i dont know about and should stop them all together?

My suggest calorie intake seems to change alot, from 3200 to 2700, is ths normal? And what is it based on? I've tried eating that much but sometimes its just alot of food, and i dont feel good the day after...

I been eating about 2000 to 2200, and feel much better. 2 days ago I started eating no sugars/carbs, and feel alot better, but occasionally hungry at night, and early AM.

Does this sound like a good idea?

Wow great advice guys... I would love to do the swimming thing, but as it turns out the shoulder is more severe than the knees, which prevents from the over the head motion required from swimming.

I tried the elpitical yesterday for the first time, at first i didnt like it but once i got adjusted to it.. It was agood work out..

again thanks!!

wow I am throughly confused, as I have a hard time keeping my 'fat burning' target heart rate. Its low at 112, generally i get as high as 170, and try to keep it around 140 to 150 while I'm on the treadmill or stair machine. even when i put the machine on flat (no incline), i have to walk about 1.2 MPH to get that low of a heart rate, it is very hard to keep it that low.

Is it bad to do 140 heart rate?

I think there might be the factor that i am almost 300 LBS (I lost 15 LBS, since i started ), and i think the sheer fact I am carrying around all this wieght make my heart move faster. I feel real good when i keep the workout steady at 140, but I need to lose the weight...

I have a general strong frame, and I dont need any strgnth increase, and I want to wait for toning when i get down to a more trainable weight..

any advice? or thoughts?

I need some advice here.. i used to be a great athlete, I was a profiecent martial artist (Lua, a hawwian art simmalar to jiu jitsu) and i rode bikes for hours a day, and did what they call action sports now a days (ramps, tricks etc), but became a musician, lived the lifestyle for awhile, and then became quite the homebody... and did all of damage (and alot of damage from the bikes too, my knees hurt alot, and have a major shoulder issue) and(long story short) got up to 300lbs, 100lbs of that from the last 2 years. Now because of the damage, my DR. suggests not to run until my weight comes down at least to 200, to avoid more damage to my knees.

Up till now, i never been in a gym and have no idea how to use the equipment.

My main focus is to get to 200lbs and then work on toning up, and then get back to training in martial arts.

I have been using the stair machine for about 20 to 30 minutes, and then the treadmill for about 30 minutes at varying speeds at pretty decent inclines.

I tried the bikes, but they seem ineffective and VERY uncomfortable ( i imagine my weight is the culprit there)... is there anything else low impact i can do to burn some fat off? Or am i headed in the right direction?

I want to hit 200lb around the new year...

any advice anyone?
