Ugh. So many BBQs over the last 5 days. BUT! I worked out through it all and I'm back to eating healthy. Here's to seeing a loss next week!

I dropped off the face of the world for a bit there. In an effort to remain accountable I'm joining up with this thread again. I would love to reach my goal by new year so it's kind of the perfect place for this.

(I'm not eligible for the weigh in this week because I didn't officially post last week's weight.)

I have a feeling some of that is water weight, but a loss is a loss!

body calipers and other ways to calculate BF
Exercise & Training Tips

My scale is pretty good. I have no idea if the NUMBER itself is accurate but it does seem to give comparatively accurate readings. In that I may gain weight but the scale says my body fat is lower, and indeed my clothes are a bit loser. Or sometimes I just gain weight AND bodyfat and yep, my clothes get tighter.

And that's enought for me--if you really want to know the actual number though you need to get a professional to use the calipers on you (the calipers, especially if you aren't trained well in using them will be more off than the scale).

I think the only thing I would worry about here is making some of the rewards weight oriented. As I'm sure many here can attest even after a "perfect" week it's still possible to maintain or even gain weight. I wonder if by associating a negative point value to that and "wiping out" any positive points gained by exercise and diet that you'll come to resent this.

Maybe just base it on the behaviors that you want to encourage--because those are the things you can actually control

You can make a challenge "invite only" so people would have to give you their e-mail address and then you'd invite people that way. Or we could all give your our names on there and you'd remove people that weren't from Traineo.

I just joined as well! I'm excited! I need a boost to get me back out there running.

Are we going to try and make sure that only traineo members are in this? Because since it's public anyone else who wanted could join. I'm not sure you can make it private once it's open though.

I wouldn't recommend calipers unless you are trained in using them (or can find someone who is trained to use them for you). They are just as inaccurate as the scale in the hands of someone who isn't trained.

I have a similar scale and you need to have your feet damp when you use it for body fat. That's something to consider as well.

Plus, I use it more in terms of finding out if I'm losing body fat--not necessarily what exact body fat % I am. So use it once a week for 5 weeks and see if you can notice a trend.

There's also NO fat in your diet. Your brain needs good fats to function properly.

Add some nuts, avocado, low fat cheese, yogurt to your diet, or just add some olive oil when you cook your veggies.

Maybe what you really need to do is talk to a nutritionist about your goals, and how to reach them in a healthy way. They may be able to come up with a diet you can live (and lose weight) with.

I lost 65 pounds about 5 years ago.

It took about 1 year to get rid of 50 pounds, and another full year to get rid of the last 15.

I did change my calories a lot, part of that was finishing college though. Those all-you-can-eat dining halls, and late night pizza and beer runs really did a number on me. But aside from that I finally learned about portions and nutrition and that really helped too. I was eating between 1200 and 1600 during my weight loss period.

I also worked out--at least 2 miles every day the first year, during the second year I was up to 3-4 miles a day, plus a lot of weight lifting.

I've maintained most of the loss over the years. I got a new job 2 years ago that kind of threw me for a loop though--longer hours, more business dinners etc. I put on about 20 pounds within 6 months of getting the job. Once I was settled I lost 10 of those--now I'm trying to lose the last 10, and maybe another 5 just to get to a vanity weight. (We'll see after those first 10 pounds though. :B)

If you don't want to get up at 6AM try 9AM. It should still be cool enough to run, or at least walk. Plus it will regulate your bed times, and if you take plenty of water it shouldn't be too bad. You can also buy a couple dumb bells (maybe one 5 pound set and one 10 pound set) to start on some weight training. And a medicine ball should round you out.

Or if you prefer cardio, buy some DVDs to do in the house.

If you go to active.com you can choose your sport on the left hand side of the page and then on the right hand side of the page you can enter your zip code and it will give you a list of activities that are going on in your area.

I also sometimes just google my city and 10K or 5K or whatever I'm interested in running. Good luck!
Can You Really Boost Your Metabolism?
Exercise & Training Tips

I don't think the article is completely decrying muscle building, it's pointing out that the metabolic advantages muscle claims to have are overstated by obviously biased muscle mags. (And yes, to all the men that have replied--muscle is actually pretty difficult for women to build so just remember there's a whole other gender out there. )

Most scientific studies I've read tend to agree about the amount of calories that muscle burns at rest though. (Muscle mags claim 50-100 calories per pound of muscle, I've seen a range of 10-20 calories in most studies.)

For most people here though either extreme is not relevant. So take it all with a grain of salt.

I will second on the goals. I sign up for races for this very reason. Knowing that I will be running with thousands of people on a definite date in the future keeps me on a regular training routine. (So I'm not the last one across the finish line!)

The problem I was having is after the race I'd just get lazy again and lie around eating cake. (Very close to reality! ) So I just sign up for more races now.

Have you tried any of the Kashi frozen meals? They're pretty healthy compared to other frozen meals (usually less sodium, more dietary fiber, more protein). They taste pretty good too.

Steel Cut Oats have a little more dietary fiber than rolled. That's about it.

I've got this scale: http://www.amazon.com/Tanita-BF679W-Scale-Monitor- Water/dp/B0009V1YPK

which I did a bit of research on to get.

The issue with bioimpedance (which most scales use for bf%) is that it's very sensitive to water changes in your body. And you need to have your feet a little damp when you use it (it sends a small current through your legs).

But if you make sure to do it at the same time every day (and not after a super salty meal, or after you've sweat a lot) and make sure that your feet are a little damp mine has proved to be very consistent. (As to whether or not it's accurate is a different issue.)

I just started using it as well. I'm so excited about it! It's great to finally know how far I'm running and about what pace I'm going at. And I really like the website as well. I've joined a few challenges on there today and they're already motivating because someone is already ahead!

I have a June goal to do 40 miles (considering I just got my Nike+ Saturday I'll have to hustle with that one) and a goal to burn 3600 calories in 4 weeks.

The Hanging Gardens

The Pyramids

The Colossus

The Temple of Artemis

The Statue of Zeus

The Lighthouse (of somewhere)

A mausoleum--of someone.

Heh. A little light on the details, but I think that's all of them.

Oh and I thought the pyramids were the only ones standing--is the mausoleum still around?

Also I read that they think the Hanging Gardens may never have existed (there's no first hand account of them--just second hand.)

-2.8!

After three weeks of gaining I realized that maybe my gains weren't just water weight or a big meal the night before and maybe I should start--you know--watching my calories and actually exercising again.

And it worked! Fancy that!
