Is anyone aware of any info on this subject that is more than anecdotal evidence. I am very new to the pod casts but I have heard 10-15 of them . I heard the suggestion that Sumo Wrestlers don't eat breakfast to help weight gain, therefore skipping breakfast is bad for weight loss. I have never been a big breakfast eater. I leave the house for work around 6:30am and I don't eat anything until 10:00am. I usually don't even feel hungry until then. It works ok for me and I don't know of any reason to change it. I am however interested in seeing any scientific evidence on this subject. I would consider changing my eating habits if I could prove to myself that it would make a difference. As was said in another pod cast, "some people believed in blood letting, and people still believe in homeopathy". Because people practice something does not prove that it works. (I was so glad to hear Jeff and Russ have a sensible and reasoned opinion about homeopathy.) So, Jeff, Russ, anyone?

I'm not sure how much Jeff and Russ check this site. They definately check the comments on the show notes. I would suggest that you ask the question there. You could either go to the actual show notes from the episode where they mention the Sumo wrestlers, or just ask it in a recent show note section. At the bottom of each show note there is a place to click on "comment" (if your are signed in).

Then don't, If it is working for you then why would you want to change it, but (please take this as constructive) by looking at your photo and the fact that you are here on this website would suggest that you are looking to improve yourself.

I am sure there is studies out there and you could do your own research using pub-med and google but also sometimes you need to just trust the massive public consensus on an issue. Do you ask your doctor to backup everything he/she tells you with a study? How about you mechanic?

How about your priest(or other)??????

I am not sure if there are any studies that a priest could use to backup his point of view.

You have heard about true believers? Well I am a true skeptic. My doctor has suggested I take cholesterol meds. I am resisting. My grandparents on my moms side were both overweight and lived past 80. My grandfather on my dad's side was overweight and lived to be 89 with diabetes. My older brother is extremely overweight and still alive. My mom has been heavy all my life and no health problems. If the doctor wants me to take cholesterol meds she needs to discuss them in terms of My condition. Not how they statistically affect the population as a whole. With my condition, family history etc. what is right for me.

So yes I insist on way more than massive public consensus before I take possibly health altering items.

As far as why I would want to change my eating habits,

I have been losing weight with my current eating schedule. If changing my eating schedule would make my weight loss healthier or faster or easier it would be worth considering. I am looking for good scientific info to help me decide if I can benefit from making this change.

Fair enough Ken, I also hope Jeff answers this questions as I would like to read a study result on that question but even if it came back with a study that said that having a good breakfast didn't help with weight loss (highly unlikely) then I wouldn't stop eating breakfast and go back to not having having breakfast because I am now use to it and would be staving by 8:30am if I stopped.
I understand your reluctance to start eating breakfast as it was one of the harder changes I had to make but the best study you can do is to just do it and see what results YOU have. Since you are only really concerned about your own personal results from any change you make then why don't you try it, track what changes it makes for you and then make a decision on weather to continue or not based on the outcome of your trail. It isn't like you are deciding if you should shoot up or not, it is just breakfast.

Also note that most of us don't make the decision to loss weight due to mortality reasons but (at least for me) rather for quality of life.

Well done on your weight loss so far, keep up the good fight.

For me, the only reason I would not be hungry in the morning is because I've eaten too much the night before. I think it's better to eat in the morning to power your day, and go to bed without a full tummy. At least for me.

Hey all,

I will point out this thread to Jeff, but meanwhile here's a link to a study I found on PubMed. It's about meal frequency and losing fat. The study focused on skipping lunch vs. breakfast, but I think the conclusions still hold true.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18053311

Bottom line from the study was that more frequent meals help in satiety, not feeling hungry, and aid in fat oxidation, losing fat, especially at night.
