Unfortunately, there's no way to spot reduce fat (if only there were!), but by strengthening your core and especially by building up your abdominals and oblique muscles you can firm up this area a bit.

Some oblique exercises are here, and some abdominal exercises are here.

I second Ron's message. Work on your trunk & obliques. Side bends, situps, roman situps, leg lifts, a good amount of yoga postures.. The stronger your core muscles are the more they will tighten the area. This will not eliminate your handles but will help. Word of warning if you train like a crazy man you can unintentionally make them larger.

Hence why lifestyle shifts are important. A diet is something that is temporary, a lifestyle is forever. Pay attention to what you eat, and if you cheat, at least be honest and document it. The more you pay attention to things the more change you can effect.

@ Andy

I am not familiar with Roman Sit-ups ... do you have a link you can throw my way that has examples?

Keep it consistent. They will shrink with time. Also follow the above guidance, by firming up those obliques you will make that midsection look firm and tight.

CARDIO!!!

Seriously, cardiovascular exercise and making sure your diet is in check is the best thing you can do to reduce those love handles. It will be slow going, but be consistent and you'll get consistent results.
