What percentage of people are overweight? How many people are overweight in the US?

We are living in an obese world .The problem which was considered endemic to certain developed countries has today become pandemic. As predicted by a group of researchers at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, by 2030, 58% of the world's population will be overweight or obese.

The study states that till the year 2005, approximately 23.2% of the world's adult population was overweight and 9.8% was obese. Even now almost one third of the world's population is either overweight or obese, which is quite an alarming figure.

America - a Weighty Nation

Obesity and Americans go together just like apple-pie and ice- cream. Among the developed countries the United States tops the list in obesity and continues to do so. About two-third of its adult are overweight and one third are obese according to the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2001- 2004.

All adults: 133.6 million (66 percent)
Women: 65 million (61.6 percent)
Men: 68.3 million (70.5 percent)

* The statistics presented here are based on the following definitions unless otherwise specified: healthy weight = BMI > 18.5 to < 25; overweight = BMI > 25 to < 30; obesity = BMI > 30; and extreme obesity = BMI > estimated 55% adults are overweight and 23% fall in the obese category

Childhood obesity has reached alarming proportions in the U.S. and has made the authorities sit up and take stock of the situation seriously.

What is Obesity? What constitutes being overweight? What are the risks of being overweight?

A person is said to be obese when he has excessive amount of body fat. The World Health Organization defines obesity as "a condition of abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in adipose tissue, to the extent that health may be impaired.” If an individual’s calorie intake is more than the calories he burns, then he is bound to put on weight. It doesn't take much time before an overweight person becomes an obese person. Obesity is a serious health hazard and if one does not pay timely heed to one's growing waistline and increasing BMI, it leads to a number of health problems.

How to find out if you are overweight or obese?

Find out your BMI and you will know whether you are overweight or obese. A BMI of 30 or more means you fall under the obese category and you need to drastically cut down your weight, watch what you eat and introduce major lifestyle changes in order to reduce the chances of serious health risks. Anyone who is overweight should also be cautious and should not pile up additional weight. A BMI of 25 to 30 means you fall in the overweight category.
