I need a recommendation for a quality web-based calorie journal (ala WeightWatchers without the points nonsense. The one I'm on now is far too generic in its food choices. I had input Hershey's Kisses and scallions. That's how generic.

I looked over Fitday today and thought it was great too! Another one that was recommended to me (but I haven't used) is

www.sparkpeople.com

Tigerlily, sparkpeople is a great site. However, the website is way too slow due to all the information they have and advertisement. Of course this is just my opinion.

The Daily Plate is what I use. It has a lot of food choices including generic, name brand and restaurant. It's basic account is free (which does everything that I need). And you can add foods that haven't been added yet.

It would be pretty cool if traineo had something like this. Don't get me wrong, I love the ease of the slider bar for the diet thing and I'm sure that is a selling point for most people, however, what if they had an option for calorie counting for those that want to take advantage of it? Nothing mandatory, just something to help out those of us who have never calorie counted before in our lives and need some help. And it would keep us on the same site, instead of having to maintain two.

CalorieKing! But -- I use their desktop software. Their online tracker is decent as well, but after years of trying different web solutions, I really think running it on the desktop is the way to go. Their database is incredible.

I think FitDay web is attrocious -- they haven't updated the functionality on that site in at least 4 years (and as far as I can tell from a quick glance, haven't updated their database much either -- perhaps as generic as you mention). Their desktop app is much better, but also hasn't been updated in years.

My Food Diary is really, really good. I use it and love it. You can even create recipes and it will track its approximate calorie & nutritional info count.

Good luck!

Wow, I didn't know there were so many out there. Thanks for the input, Fred. I'm feeling averse to becoming so scientific about my food because I think I eat healthy... but maybe that's the resistance in me too. One thing I did find after looking up fitday and sparkpeople is how many calories there are in things. I totally underestimated the calories in a slice of cake... I'm so going to be celibate at the next office b'day celebration!

Another vote for Sparkpeople. The nice thing about their database is that you can search for foods that other people have entered. Saves a lot of time, I find. The other benefit is that you can save food combinations which, if you eat a lot of the same meals frequently (e.g., yogurt with grape nuts, cereal with milk, or complicated recipes), makes entering servings of these foods much quicker than inputing each ingredient separately. The only problem is that you can't link to your food diary publicly as you can with Fitday.

Wasn't Traineo going to roll out a similar food tracker, or is that not happening now?

I've heard they aer working on it at the moment. I'm hoping they don't forget us Brits and maybe include serving sizes in more comprehensible measurements (how much is 1 cup of chopped onion anyway?!)

I keep an excel spreadsheet of the calorie counts of my foods, both basic ingredients and prepared. If I have a food that I have a question about, I simply google it. For example, if I don't know how many calories there are in broccoli, I google "broccoli calories" and find out. This sounds like alot of work, but after my first week, I rarely had to look things up, and I eat a wide variety of foods. It has become a very valuable tool that is quick and specific to my own individual eating habits,
Juan

Perhaps the point is that weight is a much more accurate measure.

Heather, you can get American cup measures in most large supermarkets (try Sainsbury's or Tesco's) these days. All you would have to do then is chop up the onions, put them in the cup and weigh 'em.

I bought cup measures as a lot of recipes that I get from friends sometimes come from the US and it's easier to just give in and use cup measures rather than try and convert things!

Hi I'm new to this site so have been reading some of the threads and picking up tips

I looked up a couple of the links provided above and I've signed up for the Daily Plate. It is USA focussed but there are plenty of generic foods on there but I will add some of the brands I use when I have some spare time. I like the charts and the facility to make up regular meals you eat so that you don't have to input the separate ingredients all the time

Agree, Audrey www.calorieking is very useful.

Not a lot of sites will come back with results on items such as "bruschetta" and "margarita" . . . essential stuff in New York and Texas, but calorie king seems to have it covered.

For additional nutritional information -- i.e. Glycemic load and in-depth nutritional analysis,

www.nutritiondata.com is useful

I try to keep a general idea about the values of what I'm eating, and resources like these help.

I have made fitness and good health a priority in my life. A change in lifestyle helped me to lose around 100 pounds. 15 years later, I still have to work hard and stay focused to maintain a healthy weight. Exercise for me is easy. I actually enjoy it. I run about 26-30 miles a week as well as teach group fitness classes...step, abs, and bodypump. My biggest challenge is eating healthy. I know what I should eat. However, I just love food, especially sweets. There are times that this is a struggle. However, I know that nothing taste so good that its worth being overweight and unhealthy.
