Teeheeeeeeeee, at dieting that is.
For me, 2006 was the first time in my life that I ever tried an actual "diet", as before that, it seemed that through the magic of circumstance, or perhaps it was just the blessing of youth, whenever I'd gain weight it'd always come off without any concious effort of my own.
So back to '06, it was then that I became painfully aware, (literally, via some compressed discs and sometimes paralyzing nerve-pinching), that it was time to take the bull, (sheeeeet! ; ), by the horns and so, I commenced a journey that brought me right back to "me", and even closer than I had ever been before, losing 60 pounds of baggage, (some spiritual too), in the process.
This was my first diet, really a lifestyle change and when I read about how many folks have, "tried it all before" etc., it makes me curious as to the stats here, so my Q:
How many diets have you tried?

I am 34 years old, married and a father of a 2.5 year old. They are the motivators for me to reach my goal. I started the new journey on 8/21/06 @307 lbs and as of June '08, I have lost around 108 lbs. I have been able to keep 100 lb weight loss since Sept. '07. What keeps me on track is the Traineo community, vision of a healthy and fit future and the mini-goals below. *GOAL 1 = 244 lbs, Date = 2/15/07 Date Met = 2/7/07 *GOAL 2 = 229 lbs, Date = 3/22/07 Date Met = 3/30/07 ________________________ *GOAL 3 = 199 lbs, Date = 6/30/08 Date Met = 6/5/08 *GOAL 4 = 185 lbs, Date = 09/30/08 Date Met = TBD (185 is my "ultimate" goal. Then build muscle.)

My motivation disappeared for awhile, and quite frankly it's not all that visible at the moment. I've set up a 20 week workout plan to run a half marathon. Usually I overdo it the first week back, so hopefully this will help me increase my excercise gradually and do what I need to do to be healthy and happy again!

My curiosity got the best of me as well, Minu. I think I'll stick to the dieting info and leave the rest unsaid. Wouldn't ya know that we'd be the first 3 to comment on this particular thread.
Anywho... When I was younger, I didn't really need to diet. I was always active riding my bike or hiking even through high school. I got pretty serious about it my senior year and started going to the gym at 5:00a.m. before school started. Then I decided that I was going to eat healthy and monitor fat intake to 23 grams of fat or less/day. I did it every day. My resolve was amazing. Then I went to college and got my own apartment. We lived on fast food and microwave meals. I was still relatively thin because I still remained active in and out of the gym. THEN I got married and went on the pill. A combination of the pill AND eating whatever and whenever wreaked havoc on my body...I gained 60 pounds in 5 months. I've kept about 30 of those 60 pounds off for several years now. So...that was back in 1998-1999. Since then, I've tried Low-carb (for like 2 days b/c I thought it was WHACK), Weight Watchers (which I liked, but didn't want to pay for), and JUDDD (which worked very well for several months until I started feeling dizzy and nauseated). Fad diets really aren't my thing. I do best when I focus on eating healthy, natural foods and getting my workouts in. I never thought weight would be an issue for me way back when I was 105 lbs. and 7% body fat. (BTW I looked SICK then, because I was so small...I'd rather be where I am now than THAT skinny.) And that's the nitty-gritty on my "first time."

ANGIE! I've missed you!
I too gained the big weight apres marriage. "Fat 'n happy" is the saying I believe? I'll take fit and fabulous over that any day.
We basically had a one-year honeymoon, paid thankyouverymuch, and MAN did we make the MOST of it.
And in my case, it wasn't the pill that added to the poundage, it was that damn depo provera, (and weight gain wasn't the scariest side effect of that stuff either, but that's subject for another thread entirely--perhaps another forum!), coupled of course with eating like like all the King Louis' put together...
Living and learning SO MUCH.

I have been working out regularly since Sept 07. I've been here several times in the past BUT this time the change is going to last a LIFETIME!!
I am the mother of a ten year old competitive figure skater (which takes alot of my time). I work fulltime and my hubbie works away. Time is a challenge!!!
I would like to lose 20lbs by July 1.
I resolve to: Short term (by June 1, 2008): 1. Get back on track after my vacation in Cuba (April 7 - 16, 2008) 2. cardio 5x/week including trying to get back to running if my achillis tendon will ever heal! 3. weight train 3-4 x per week 4. Drink 64 oz water per day (this will be the biggest challenge!) 5. Obtain a Normal BMI (154 lb)!
Midterm Goals (by July 1, 2008): 1. Continue with short term 2. Try to increase mileage to run a 10 km race around Canada Day (July 1, 2008) 3. Try to find a 10 km race to run between June 15 - July 15, 2008 4. Obtain goal weight (currently set at 150 lb but maybe 144 lb) - BMI around 23 5. Continue weight training
Long term (By March 31, 2009): 1. To still be at this in 12 months time (the exercise and health habits not the weight loss part!) 2. To maintain a BMI of around 23! 3. To run a half marathon...if all works out...Myrtle Beach Half Marathon Feb 2009

I was active during high school so didn't have issues then but when I hit university (at 16 years old) I gain the freshman 15 every sept - April and lost it in May - Aug.
Once I graduated from University I was able to control my weight more until I married then the yoyoing began again. In 1996-97 I really got everything where I wanted it to be and then I got pregnant! Enough said!
In 2003 I got everything back on track again and then in 2006 my husband started working in Alberta and everything fell apart again!
So I have had several attempts at attaining a healthly lifestyle that have fallen apart after awhile. I find that I put other things ahead of myself - family, work , friend, volunteer activities and before you know its bang...the physical activity is gone, the eating starts to slip and the weight starts to climb.
This time will be different - I will remember to look after me!

I am using the Zone way of eating (www.drsears.com) to attain my target and increase my wellness.
I'm losing weight for my health, energy, and for my friend's wedding so no one mistakes me for Ms. Piggy's sister.

I gained about 40 lbs in college, decided I needed to do something about it, started studying nutrition, and then used the lifestyle plan prescribed by the Zone Diet to shed it all.
Kept that off for a few years thanks to the nutrition education I developed, then got married. Gained it all back + 30 lbs! Needless to say, I wasn't eating healthily anymore. There is no excuse for it - I am all too aware of what made me fat this second time, and it was ME!!!!
Now I'm back to it, and the weight is coming off more easily than I imagined. I can't say that once I get back down to my old weight that I won't continue the cycle again. The last time I lost the weight I never imagined that I would abandon everything I knew to be healthy, but I did!

Sadly, I started my first diet when I was 16 after my volleyball coach told me I "could stand to lose a few pounds." He was fired a couple years after I graduated. I like to think it was because he was a jerk.
Marriage didn't send my weight up. It was those darn kids! I definitely ate for two (or three, or four) once I got past the morning sickness phase. Gained 65 pounds the first time. Lost it through various means. Gained 45 pounds with the second. Still working on losing that. She's going to be 13 this year.
My most successful commercial diet was Weight Watchers. Now I focus on making permanent changes for the better rather than having a set "diet plan."

I'm a slappy geek (IT Systems Analyst at work, Gadget lover at play) and ready to do something to change my state of slappiness...time to de-slappify myself.
Unfortunately, my love for all things tech is, by it's nature, a very sedentary lifestyle which has lead me down the path of being slappy (overweight/obese, in case you were curious). After having three different doctors strongly urge me to lose weight and a blood pressure reading of 190/110...this new path became an absolute must.
I've joined the Weight Watcher ranks and found it to be a great gateway to my 'lifestyle change'. It has been a tremendous help to reducing my calories, while helping get in my daily intake of fruits, vegetables, calcium, water, omega-3's, etc...
As for fitness, I have been using my eliptical trainer at home because running outdoors was a little harsh on my knees. This has helped to ease my hand off the TiVo remote and onto the home exercise equipment. I now watch digitally recorded shows while huffing and puffing. =P
I look forward to meeting new and interesting people on here and finding new 'thinspirations' and motivators.

My first time came via wrestling. In order to cut weight I did the typical low cal aka starvation method because I just didn't know any better. But combined with all the extreme levels of exercise I lost tremendous amounts of weight in a short period of time...of course I gained it all back just as fast. lol
