So I just started the swank diet and for all that I read it seems to be a good lifestyle change more than a diet. Its was originally made for patients with MS but it looks like it would work great for most people so I want to share.
Basically you cut down saturated fats as much as you can. No more than 15 grams of it a day. The rules:
1. Saturated fat should not exceed 15 grams per day.
2. Unsaturated fat (oils) should be kept to 20-50 grams per day.
3. No red meat for the first year.
4. After the first year, 3 oz. of red meat is allowed once per week.
5. Dairy products must contain 1% or less butterfat unless otherwise noted.
6. No processed foods containing saturated fat.
7. Cod liver oil (1 tsp. or equivalent capsules) and a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement are recommended daily.
I am not doing the cod liver oil part of it at least not yet (bleh) and I couldn't give up my Special K Snack Bites (it has .5g of saturated fats so it goes against rule 6) but other than that its great. I am eating so healthy and I feel like I am eating so much and my calories haven't gone over 1800 calories on any day. That coupled with exercise puts me at net 1200 calories a day.
Its forced me to eat a lot of fruits to make up for the sweet cravings and a lot of vegetables to make my meal more filling and complete. I don't eat red meat often to begin with so I haven't been missing it. And I started cooking more often since most packaged dinner have saturated fats.
On that note anyone know of any prepackaged meals with no saturated fats?
Anyways I hope that this doesn't get boring because so far its a great diet change. Plus very healthy and natural.
