I hope to reach my goal of 165lbs. by running, using the Vcycling program at church, regular cycling and weightlifting -- and mowing lots and lots of grass! My favorite diet book is "The South Beach Diet" because I don't have to count calories with it.

I am a 47 yo male and currently weigh 183. My goal is to lose 20 lbs in 70 days using the South Beach diet. Is this reasonable? I will run 30 minutes every morning I am starting to lift weights 3 days per week.

"Appearance is a consequence of fitness."
28-Dec-2007
A lot has happened in the last few months. I am recently single, I have moved into the city from the suburbs, and I have made little weight progress. I reached a low of 213 a couple of times, but with recent travel and the holidays I am back over 227 ? not happy territory. I think 2008 will be a big year for me, so I am starting off with a push to my goal weight of 185.
Other goals/plans for me in 2008 are: -Play league sports (I have signed up for football starting in January) -Compete in the 2008 Chicago Triathlon (August 24, 2008). -Bike the California Wine Country
My journey began about a year ago. In the time between Thanksgiving and New Years Eve 2006 I dropped 13 lbs to start 2007 at 300. My next goal was 225, I met that before the end of August 2007. So now it is the march to 185. But not just that, the weight loss is great, but I am going for body transformation. I want to develop functional strength. Agility, flexibility, speed, and power I can use roughhousing with my son or enjoying sports. The body shape improvement and added definition are just a bonus (it is sad when your 3 year old son has more tone than you).
As for the remainder of my details, I work in management for an online broker. I enjoy reading (mostly-non-fiction), trading, cooking, travel, spending time with my son and friends, and (now) playing sports and working out.

Dan,
I think your goal is more than achieveable. I am following a similar diet to south beach, it best discribed as a combination of South Beach, Adkins, and Sonoma. I eat a lot of fish (grilled, broiled, and raw) and low GI veggies.
Keep up the motivation and I know you will acieve your goal.

Hi I am Kat, I am seventeen and I started this school year at boarding school. Although it's not college, I have the same problems with living in dorms, going to the school's dining hall, and staying up late finishing work and studying. Luckily I haven't gained the "freshman 15" (like a good majority of my friends have), but I have gained some weight and would like to learn how to eat right in an environment with a wide variety of [mediocre] foods. Have you ever been to a buffet and decided to try a little of each, and before you knew it your plate is piled high? Imagine that for every meal every day! It's a slow learning process but I would love it if you would like to be my motivator. Just message me! : D Thanks

I dont know exactly what the South Beach Diet is, but 20 pounds in 70 days sounds like a reasonable goal (about 2lb per week---dont be discouraged if you plateau, it'll probably come off the next week)! Good luck!

I want to look good this summer! I want to walk the nude beach with pride and I want to win when we play Volleyball! I've also got that Marathon that I am training for and I can have a good time with the weight that I am at. Gotta cut down!

I just want to throw in a warning here. My mom did the south beach a few years ago, by the book and she lost like 20 lbs., in about the amount of time that you want to. She went on the diet again here recently and started to experience hematuria, which is blood in the urine. She went to her doctor and he told her to discontinue the diet immediately, after which the hematuria stopped and he suggested that she do weight watchers.

Hmm. I'm confused. The only thing different from my regular meal plan is that I am now avoiding sugar and starchy foods and junk food. How can that hurt my body? I will be eating more vegetables than I used to.

Hello everyone. I'm a 58 year old librarian living in the Ozarks. I am 30 pounds down with a lot yet to lose. It's been slow going for a while, but I'm finally starting to go downward again. I realize that it will probably take another year for me to reach my goal, but I'm going to make it.

Dan, congratulations on switching to a healthier lifestyle. I know many people who have used the South Beach diet to lose weight. None of them had any health problems along the way. Quite the contrary.
People get sick whether they are dieting or not. But if they happen to be dieting at the time an illness occurs, the diet often gets blamed. Maybe there is a cause and effect and maybe there isn't.

80 POUNDS GONE!
I've gone from a size 20 to a 6 (and even sometimes a 4!) and I've never looked this good in my life! (22 years of being overweight, dontcha know)
I'm a dedicated South Beach girl with a newfound love for exercise.
I've given up white flour, white sugar, fast food, and who knows what else. But you'll never get my coffee away from me!!

South Beach is a very healthy plan.Lots of veggies, lots of lean protein, whole grains... I've been on it since July 25th of last year and have lost almost seventy pounds. I feel fantastic! Personally, I NEVER plan to be off the Beach. I'll just transition into Phase 3 for maintenance once I achieve my goal.
And speaking of goals, I think yours is more than doable.

Dan, absolutely!!! You'll most likely lose 8-10 of it the first two weeks if you don't cheat. And the best part is, it will stay off. After that, probably a pound a week. Your goal sounds perfect.
Tiffany, I really really think something else was wrong with your Mom, I'm no doctor, but there is *no way* eating brown rice, flour, veggies and lean meat can cause blood to be in your urine. Please, let's be logical. I hate to sound rude, I'm really not trying to be, I just get a bit bent when people rag on such a healthful way of life, I've been around and around with my Mother in law about it and about taking vitamins (which incidentally her doctor supposedly told her not to take vitamins because he detected trace minerals in her urine???) Sometimes doctors do not know best.
Dan, I personally know of two diabetics who are no longer on insulin because of SB diet. It's great. I know I am on here trying to lose 15 more pounds, but I want to tell you that last August, I weighed 172. I weigh 146 now. I'm living proof that it works.

The first phase of South Beach diet has the most potential for issues. Low carb diets put a lot of pressure on the kidneys in the first few stages and some people have bad reactions. I wouldn't say that its impossible for the diet to have a direct effect on certain people. That said, a high protein / low carb diet is generally considered safe on the kidneys if you accompany it with a lot of water.
Phase 2 and 3 of South Beach are completely healthy and nutritionally balanced and there's no way anyone would argue that following the diet's advice here has any risks. It's definitely only the first phase thats controversial.

I won't suggest a particular diet over another and I think this diet will probably suffice for what you want but, I think everyone should give two books a read if you're really interested in nutrition. The first one is The China Study and the second is called Eat to Live. These two books have changed my eating habits entirely and not only did I lose more than 10 pounds in a month, I never felt hungry or deprived. These are not gimmick diets that won't be around in a few years, these are life changing diets that will have you not only losing weight but, feeling more energetic and alive. You may not be a reader but, both books I think you can get on CD as well. BTW, I think your goal is very reasonable. Just remember if you start to lift weights that muscle weighs a good bit more than fat and depending on how hard you train when you step on the scale it might not look like you have lost that much weight when in fact you really have. I better judge of weight lost in your case might be to get a scale that measures BMI or get a tape measure to check your waist line. Good luck with achieving your goals.

My point is that the first stretch of the South Beach diet can be hard on your body. Just to let you know, I am a nurse...so I do know quite a bit about the human body. I just wanted to throw in a warning about something that did happen because of a diet change. Hematuria can occur with any diet changes and are more likely when the diet changes drastically, as it usually does with South Beach.
Another related thing can cause hematuria is severe exercise, so that can also play a factor with someone who has just made a lot of hardcore changes.
All I am saying is watch for it, I'm not saying that it's going to happen. This way if it does, you will have a possible idea of what the problem is.
