I recently read in Oxygen Magazine about a diet called "Eating Clean". Has anyone tried this?

Hi I am Kat, I am seventeen and I started this school year at boarding school. Although it's not college, I have the same problems with living in dorms, going to the school's dining hall, and staying up late finishing work and studying. Luckily I haven't gained the "freshman 15" (like a good majority of my friends have), but I have gained some weight and would like to learn how to eat right in an environment with a wide variety of [mediocre] foods. Have you ever been to a buffet and decided to try a little of each, and before you knew it your plate is piled high? Imagine that for every meal every day! It's a slow learning process but I would love it if you would like to be my motivator. Just message me! : D Thanks

I've heard of it...I believe it's when you eat anything that isn't processed or packaged. Anything that is natural, basically. No transfats, no preservatives, no nothing. Just what's from nature. Personally, I try to stick to something like it as much as i can! : D I would go for it!

Must get back down to me fightin' weight, darned stoopid holidays and their tasty treats...
Fer reel: A couple years ago I dropped from 200 to 120, and since I've been "maintaining" ... which has turned into a slight, slow gain. School leaves me with an excuse to not work out, and that has lead to my weight creeping up. After 20 pounds I fought hard to get off the first time I'm saying no more and working my fat bum back down into the 120s where it belongs.
I prefer lifting heavy but I've learned to not hate "cardio" and have even taken up running... sorta.
Of course, my fave pastimes are usually sedentary, my art, gaming, etc... But I can get over that.

I have no idea what in particular that would be talking about... my definition of clean is simply foods that are fibrous or protein-rific, contain good fats, not high sugar, don't contain transfats or HFCS, are high in micro-nutrient content, etc.
They don't necessarily need to be straight off the farm or whatever, whole wheat bread is a "processed" food, eggs and milk have been pasteurized, kashi cereal is not something you just pick out of the ground. It's mainly a "natural state of food" kind of idea, but not totally.
It's basically staying away from high sugar, high fat (esp things high sugar and fat, that combination is usually what gets a lot of people in trouble), highly stripped of nutrients... those kind of foods.
Fried chicken not clean, baked skinless chicken breast = clean. Cookies, not clean. Bananas, clean. Whole wheat pasta is clean, so is whole grain bread (wheat, rye, etc). Cookies and cake are not clean. Whey protein is clean. Pizza is not.
The idea being that you want to mainly eat clean foods... those are the ones that will be good for you, help you lose weight, be fuller on fewer calories, help you keep your immune system strong, give you lasting energy, usually lower on the GI scale to not spike your insulin levels, etc.
It's also always best to eat more smaller meals than three big ones, for the insulin and energy reasons, but that isn't included in my definition of "clean," per se.

My thought is this...diets don work! Period! Some of the biggest people I know are the ones who are constantly on a diet of some sort and talking about it. Don't go on a diet...a purposefull drop in nutritional intake for the temporary drop in weight. There are two many things against you there. The word Diet is negative. Dieting is depressing and the only thing positive about it, weight loss, if successful, is temporary almost EVERY TIME! So, consider this. We are going for a life style change. We want our bodies to feel better all the time. We want food which will help, not hinder us. Get the a good magazine, like Oxygen and listen to people who are trying to make us feel better by having us eat what our body and mind really want to help them work correctly. My statement then: Lifestyle change, not diet, is what will make us successful in our quest for body, nutrition and fitness perfection. I am stepping down from my soap box.

I read the article in Oxygen magazine. I found it very useful. I started with the article in Men's Health about Diabetes (Dec or Jan I think). I decided I needed to change and basically went on the protein diet for two weeks to "clean up" and then read the article in Oxygen. Really, if you follow the glycemic index you are following this plan. My thought is this, I am not going on a diet, I am doing a life style change. I feel much, MUCH better.

I'm a 17 year old honour student from Ontario, Canada. School is a very high priority in my life right now, and my aspirations of becoming a medical Doctor rely heavily upon it. In my, rather unfrequent, spare time I enjoy watching anime, writing, reading, dancing, social drinking, laughing, and playing role play games.

To me, I don't think you can go wrong with eating clean. It's how nature intended anyway. Elminating anything man hasn't brutally taken apart, rebuilt, or added a bunch of unnecessary crap to is obviously wise choice. Take your vitamins yet though, and I wouldn't go to the extent as drinking say, unhomegenized milk or anything. But sticking with organics, fresh juices, lean meats, and all that good stuff is great

I actually just started a trial of sort on clean eating. It has been a bit tough sticking to 5 to 6 meals a day and even harder to cut back on caffeine. Other than that it seems to suit me well. You can check out my progress or cheer me on or just spectate at http://www.seinlife.com
Have a good day!

I'm so proud of my abs....so I had to post them! Been weight training pretty seriously for the past 4 mos and I'm finally noticing some definition. Still have a way to go to get the much desired six pack, but off to a good start!

Tosca Reno is the author of the Eat Clean Diet book. I have it as well as the Eating Clean Workout book and I subscribe to Oxygen mag. I am totally hooked on eating clean. LOTS of fruit, veggies, whole grains, and protein from lean sources. The recipe book uses some ingredients in recipes that I haven't heard of or wouldn't really use so I substitute if possible. Other than that its great! There's breakfast, soups, stews, shakes, desserts, casseroles, etc. I highly recommend it.
