On his website, Dr. Johnson said the average weight loss is 2.5 pounds per week. "Average" means some lost slower, some faster than that. Don't be discouraged! You are doing well! We are all rooting for you!

Quoting: suesue As I talk to more thin people - I am realizing how normal this pattern is for maintaining ideal weight - the problem with us is we need to get there first!!!! Remember NOT gaining weight while eating all these yummy foods on up days is a move in the right direction!! Hang in there.
It seems to be the way my skinny teenage son naturally eats. However, my hubby was just as thin as a teenager, and I don't think he intentionally skipped a meal ever! Hubby is now trying to lose about 20 pounds that have crept on as he has gotten older and less physically active.

Quoting: Celric_knot two ideas for down days: get sugarfree gum as that can usually carry me over lunch just by having something in my mouth that tastes.
another if you like chocolate get some dark chocolate and when hungry take a very small piece and let it melt in your mouth.
this works for me as I find that taste particularly intense taste can make you feel as if you have eaten more
Hello, Im! Thanks for the ideas, and welcome. As for why this works--Dr. Johnson has some links on his website to the science behind it, if you're interested. The link is in the very first post on this thread.

That is amazing, David. I had a tough day too, with Valentine's Day being my down day! (Still, I can have some treats today!) You are doing a great job!

Hi again...After gaining the 7 pounds of water weight over night after trying that salt water flush ( that didn't work ) I decided to go on the three layer cake diet for a day..lol..I regret to inform the forum that the three layer cake diet is not effective in weight loss, I did however lose 1.5 pounds of the overnight 7 pound gain but I'm sure without the cake it would have been more. I'm REstarting the diet today..the posts are encouraging and hopefully with lots of water and no salt that fluid retention will go away. I work out on the treadmill 1 hour every am and then try to do some upper and lower body work outs during the week but it's amazing how a jump on the scale can make you want to throw in the towel on everything..that all or nothing mentality thing..anyway..I'm back in!

Noel, please don't drive yourself insane by weighing daily. Give it a week and see the final outcome. ANY loss is good!
Since I'm posting today, I guess you all know we're having yet another snow day and it's a Down Day for me. So far I've only had water and it's 11:00 a.m. That's good. What's even better is that Madeline and I are about to go pick Lucy up. It'll be nice to have her home and know she'll be with us for a long time to come.
I wish everybody a happy day, whether up or down. We can do this!!!!!

I'm a Computer Science graduate trying to lose the weight gained in the last 2-3 years. In the last 10 years I dieted my way into my goal weight for 2 times, always getting back to where I started within a couple of years... Now I'm trying to correct that and lose the weight for good!
|
# Posted: 15 Feb 2007 17:29
Hi! I think I'm gonna try this too! I've been exercising and watching the food I eat (no portion control or calorie-counting, just trying to avoid certain things) and I've been losing some weight (slowly but consistently) and body fat (dropped 11% since September). But your results are encouraging me to try this out!
And my girlfriend will also try it - she has very low self-esteem and finds every diet very hard to maintain on the long run, but as soon as I mentioned JUDDD to her she said that it might work and that it is worth a try, so we are going on this together!
Do you think I will be able to maintain my kick-boxing or spinning lessons on down days? We will go for the up-weekend scheme, with down days on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and at least for kick-boxing I don't have a choice, with my gym holding classes only on Mondays and Wednesdays...

when you think about it, it's not that amazing and makes logical sense that you could starve and gorge and still lose weight.
The body doesnt respond to just ONE day of feasting or fasting, it responds to trends, trends over weeks, months and years.
We tend to break down calorific needs into a 'per day' slot, but that's just for convenience. Really, you could look at it as per week. What I'd be interested to know is how many calories per WEEK you're eating.
How far is the gorging on the second day? bet it's not quite enough to make up for the fast the day before (a bit like when you miss a night's sleep, you don't necessarily need to sleep 16 hours to make yourself feel ok again, 10 or 12 seems fine)
What I'd be interested to know is how many calories you end up eating per week. Imagine a week of
Mon - 400 cals
Tue 2300 cals
Wed 300 cals
Thur 2500
Fri 300
Sat 2100
Sun 400
totals to 8300
compared to
7 days of 1500
which totals to 10500
this means over the course of a week you eat 2200 cals less.
If you start to look at the cumulative calories, it makes perfects sense. It's very much like the sleep analogy.
I fast each Ramadan, so no food or water during daylight hours, but I know that come dinner time I do not need to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner to keep me going, just a nrmal dinner does me fine and this is the same principal.
Honestly, I think if you can cope withthe deprivation every other day (and bear in mind there are people in this world who do with no element of choice) then it's a good way to go PROVIDED you dont go mad on unhealthy foods on the up days. You still need to get those nutrients into the system to have it working all ok.
I'm having ABSOLUTELY no weight loss on my 1500 calorie diet, despite cycling, running and dancing so I might give this a try. I know from my Ramadan experience that I can fast very successfully. I might give it a month to try and post my results if anyone is interested.

Welcome Heather C!
I think you're right. I can't speak for everyone but I find that I don't "gorge" on up days - just eat until I'm satisified. I do try and choose healthier options, but don't deny myself a treat if I want one.
So, basically, I don't starve one day and do McDonald's, Taco Bell and whatever the next.
We have found that we're just not as hungry on our up days as we thought we would be. I think we basically do balance out our calorie needs for the week.
I eat about 650 on down days, and probably 2000-2200 on up days. Some of us are going to do MWF as down days, and T/Th Sa/Su as up days, that way we have the weekends free to eat with our families.
If you decide to try this out, please keep us posted!

ok, i've decided. 1500 a day doesn't work for me (i've been on that for nearly a month now and have lost a grand total of 0 pounds and 0 ounces with 0.02% loss of bodyfat on average (but of course that fluctuates a bit). I am beginning to think a lot of fat loss truths just don't apply to me since I can can eat like a pig and not gain and eat like a sparrow and not lose. I stay at this weight no matter what I do. Upping activity level hasn;t helped, either.
so if this up and down can stimulate my body to start letting the heck go of those stored up fat cells, it's worth giving it a try. Honestly, whoo-da thought my body could be as stubborn as me?
I'll be back this time next week to report on progress, even if I don't lose anything I will let you know, it's no use only reading about success stories, right? you want a full picture. So promise I'll report next week.

I actually track my calories on up days and only eat to the level of maintaining my weight (same as a lot of others too). I actually find it hard to eat that much.

Heather,
I'm excited to see if this diet works for you. I was on WW which kept my calories and fat intake pretty low. I lost veeeerrrrrrryyyyy sllllooooowwwwwllly and my activity level was pretty high. 1 week on this diet and I've already lost ALMOST 5 lbs. I hope it works for you...please keep us informed!
Quoting: HMan Do you think I will be able to maintain my kick-boxing or spinning lessons on down days?
Hey HMan. I was worried about working out on down days in the beginning. Everyone is different, but what I have found is that I can workout, play raquetball, do the elliptical and clean the house AND WORK on my down days. I feel BETTER on my down days actually. So, for me, working out on a down day is great. Today is down for me and I'm playing raquetball at 4:00. I'll probably have a shake and maybe some EggBeaters around 2:00 so my stomach isn't empty while I play. Then I'll still have room for another shake later and some veggies and popcorn. Good luck!

I'm 39 yrs old. I own a small business and have 2 kids - 15 and 10. My husband and I have tried several different diets trying to adjust our lifestyle. We are usually sucessful for a time but then drift into old habits and old weight. Trying the JUDDDD now!
|
# Posted: 15 Feb 2007 20:30
Heather - welcome! That does seem to be exactly how it works out. I seem to be eating around 2200 calories on my up days. So I do think in the end its all about the average. And I have done almost all of the diets out there , most recently WW and this seems so much easier. Also, there is a "maintenance" plan so I really think its something I can see myself doing long term.
HMan - I can't testify to the excercise but I know my husband is trying to do this and is having a hard time getting the numbers right. We works out hard 5-6 times/week so is having more calories on down days (I think around 1000) but is not having much success losing. The JUDDDD website was a little confusing in that area... do you eat the number of calories you excercise + the base or just use the calculator?
Keep us posted how it works for you both.

Greetings, Heather,
Well I for one will be here with bells on to check out your progress.
FTR--I've been at this JUDDDING for over a week, and at the end of my first week I weighed in 4.85 pounds less.
It helped me to break an over month long plateau I had hit, and I couldn't be more encouraged.
Here is a link to a dedicated forum here created by Beth, if you care to join us there and create your own tracking thread.
Best,
M.

A couple of things:
1. I keep getting "access dnied" when I try to go to the dedicated forum... any ideas?
2. I tried the unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze. It is very good! On cereal, its good; as a drink, if you add some splenda, its very nice. Next I'm going to try it in my chocolate milkshake. 40 calories per cup...great for down days, when evry calorie counts!
It can be ordered online if you can't find it in store.

Chantal,
I am mostly doing shakes. To hold me over, I have fresh veggies (still counting those calories as my daily intake), EggBeaters, or popcorn, or a veggie burger. It depends mainly on my mood, but my main staple on down days are 2 shakes. Minu and others are counting calories diligently and staying within the recommended range. I think it's what makes you most comfortable because everyone is a little different, but still seeing results. Good luck to you and let us know how it goes for you!

Chantal,
I usually do a protein bar around noon, and then two shakes I blend later in the day. I munch on cucumbers and celery if I need something crunchy.
For me it's just easier not to have to figure out calorie amounts in different foods, but many people on this forum do that. I usually end up between 650-700 a day, which is closer to the 30% range in calories.
Good luck!
