Quoting: starfly Beth, thank you for being so patient and answering all my questions, i really appreciate it. Are you still just doing 500 calories? Congrats to everyone and their loss.
This past week I ate a low-fat/low-carb diet every day, but I did not worry so much about calorie counting. That is not JUDDDD, but I was stuck at a plateau and decided to try something extreme to shake things up, and it worked for me! I don't mean extreme in terms of lacking in nutrients or hunger--I took vitamins and did not feel hungry. But I just find the very limited choices on low-fat/low-carb gets old really quickly and I can't maintain that very long. I'm surprised I was able to do it Sunday through Friday, actually.
Today I had an up day, and tomorrow it's back to a down day.
I HOPE I don't pay for this carb-o-licious up day with some hunormous weight gain. But my girls told me today they could really tell my legs looked slimmer. Yay! Now if only my middle would start to shrink. If I lose it all in my legs I'm going to look like a chicken pretty soon, or an apple on two twigs.

My tummy fat seems to be the last to go, too. That's not the way it was when I was younger, but these days, it seems like my legs really show weight loss and gain, and the tum-tum doesn't really want to budge.

Hey Y'all! Well, I just started the JUDDD and I can't wait to make some progress on this! I am on my 2nd up day and feel like I ate too much! But, I am just getting off of a 1200 calorie restricted diet, and I feel a bit naughty! I live on South Parde Island in Texas. I am going back to school at my age, and my 25th high school reunion is next year and I want to go looking good!

Hey Y'all!
Well, I am on a down day today. I had a really good up day yesterday, and even though we were at an all you can eat buffet, I ate mostly veggies! Then I kind of blew it with the pizza last night but I had a fat free sugar free sundae too, so we will see how it goes when I weigh myself tomorrow! I hope I have lost something! But seriously when I started this diet I was doing the 1200 a day diet and now I am nervous because I know that I was consuming a lot of calories on my up days! And I think that I probably just need to get over the fact that I can put everything I want in my mouth and think better about my choices. Also, I need to just have one treat a day instead of three! Well, tomorrow will tell!

Hi, Minaxi:
Every other day, you eat very little. This is called a "down day" and you eat 500 calories or less. It's good if you can use shakes so you can't get any hidden calories or make a mistake in measuring or weighing food.
The days when you eat normally are called "up days" and you can select any type of food you want. However, you should not overstuff.
Tricks some people use for getting through a down day include:
Skipping breakfast and/or waiting a long as possible before eating anything
Staying busy to keep distracted
Nibbling on extremely low-calorie items such as cucumbers or celery if necessary
Having a little something to eat before bedtime so you can settle down and go to sleep
Tell yourself you will eat "later" or have something you are really wanting "tomorrow." Odds are, on the up day you won't actually care, but it helps you get through the down day.
When starting the diet, there is often a period of euphoria where your down days are pretty easy and you see the scale moving downwards, so that's pretty motivating.
Good luck! Be sure to read Dr. Johnson's instructions on how to do the diet, too. You can go to the very first post on this thread and click on the link to get to his website.
Welcome to the thread--post a lot so we can get to know you, okay?

You sound really excited, LOL! Hope you enjoyed it!
We cooked out, too, but I didn't eat as much as I thought I might. In fact, it seemed like *everyone* was on a down day! I had planned to cookout for lunch, but everybody kept saying they weren't hungry yet. We finally ate around 4:30, I think!
Maybe that's why I didn't gain any weight yesterday! I often go up a bit after an up day, but I actually went down a little. So that's good!

I'm interested in this eating plan, but consider the following:
I'm not sure if you touched on this point, but the idea behind this diet is increased life span and anti-aging effects. Not weight loss. The 20% / 100% calorie intake by day method averages to 60% over the long-term. Thus, your metabolism plummets over the course of a year or so. Short term weight loss is a temporary side effect.
The reduced metabolic effects from cutting caloric intake minimizes oxidization and the effects of free-radicals. This prevents (in theory) the breakdown of cells and cellular DNA over the course of your lifetime. In no way is this diet (according to the original studies) supposed to promote the maintenance of a healthy weight, and it is not meant to replace exercise or an active lifestyle. Yes, tens of thousands of years ago we starved on the savanna on a daily basis. But we also walked all day gathering and jogged the next day hunting. If you want to idealize the cave-man life, take the whole picture.
In response to asthmatics, I dated and lived with a severe asthmatic for a while. She refused to go running with me, or go to the gym because of her condition. Eventually, the doctor convinced her to try jogging even short distances. Now she's lost 10 lbs and is in better shape than most people I know. If asthma prevents you from exercising, or even discourages you, then your condition is not under control. Exercise helps asthma.
Here's some tips on exercising with asthma:
http://www.lung.ca/diseases-maladies/asthma-asthme /exercise-exercice/index_e.php
There are plenty of easy-to-find articles that show the positive, irreplaceable benefits of daily exercise. but..
Here's one study that deals with this type of diet. The effort of all the studies I've read was to delay the onset of aging-related conditions. You may remember these results being published in National Geographic.
http://jn.nutrition.org/cgi/content/abstract/131/1 0/2753
Note in this study they focused on replacing current, unhealthy diet with a limited and healthy one.
here's a summary by 4 different universities.
http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstrac t/99520223/ABSTRACT
Keep in mind I'm just throwing in my 2 cents. I'm the kind of person who favors exercise and healthy diet. The bottom line is, I think you should eat healthy everyday, avoiding high fat, high cholesterol, highly processed, or snack foods, while maintaining a constant moderate exercise routine. Every doctor will agree on that. It seems to me that this diet promotes a binge / purge lifestyle, which I can't get behind.

Thanks for your input, but I wonder where you are getting your impressions from? Not from reading the many, many posts in this group, apparently. If you were to read them, you'd find that the great majority of the people following this way of eating strive to eat healthily on the up and down days. Many of us exercise on a regular basis, too.

Wow! Joshua lots of information there - you sure do your homework. I know one doctor who advocates, lives and has abided by this lifestyle for 80 years!!! .....my dad. He jogs, skiis ( everyday in the winter) bikes ( 25 miles), golfs, travels etc. etc. All my life I have watched him alternate "diet days" with "no hold bars" eating days. He is incredibly healthy and maintained a great weight his entire life.
He is not binging and purging as you suggest, but rather making the adjustments to what his body needs if he knew he had too many calories in a day. By the way, after observing my naturally thin friends they also seem to live this way naturally. They don't count carbs, fats, calories, etc. They just intuitively "know" what their body needs and when it has had enough.

Joshua, the JUDDDD group has a lot of threads on this very topic. You might like to join the group and click on the thread titled "science stuff."
Many on the diet (including me) are very interested in the other health benefits to be gained from alternate day calorie restriction. Some are interested just to find a way to lose weight or maintain their weight loss from a different diet plan.
Head to the first post on this thread, click on the link and visit Dr. Johnson's website for his recommendations.

I have a few questions about switching to this diet.Im a male 5'7 28 yrs old now, and have had asthma since i was 4 yrs old.I was naturally built because of all the steroids i took for my asthma.Around the age of 16 i weighed(150 lbs)Then i started gaining weight till i was 18 and weighed (205lbs) I went on a strict low cal low fat diet and road bike about 5 miles a day and in 3 1/2 months i lost 65lbs.I kept it off for 5 years even after i went off the diet and then a few years later i went back up to 185lbs.About a year ago i went back on the same diet and lost 30lbs in 6 weeks. Then i went off the diet and now 6 months later i went back to 185lbs.About a week and a 1/2 ago i went back on the diet and im doing fast pace cycling for 30 minutes 3x a day averaging 30 miles a day,and also doing around 50 sit-ups 3x a day and i already lost 11lbs.But after reading this thread im starting to worry my calorie intake is way to low.I did the math and im averaging 700 calories a day with one splurge day,and im cycling and doing sit-ups 7 days a week.I dont feel burned out, just my legs alittle sore from 30 miles a day.Im also taking multi vitamins.
Do you think i will see better results with this diet?Or should i just stick with the diet that has worked for me several times in the past?Im just alittle concerned about low calorie intake 6 days a week.
btw...my asthma and general health feels better then it ever did.

Hi Minaxi,
Two down days in a row doesn't seem to speed weight loss for those who have tried it. Two up days in a row doesn't seem to stop weight loss, as long as the up days aren't excessive.
For myself, sometimes if I do two up days in a row, I tend to go overboard. I've never tried two down days, and I think it sounds unpleasant, but sometimes I've thought of doing it instead of the two up days just because it might help me avoid the "two day eating spree" mentality. Alternating up and down days would be ideal, but there are always events of one kind or another that interfere with that.
If you have a vacation or a party or whatever, don't worry about doing the more than one up day in a row. Just try not to go crazy. I would think that two down days in a row would be a last-resort kind of strategy.
Hope this helps.

I agree with Lisa, minaxi...I,personally,wouldn't want to do that because I wouldn't want two DOWN days in a row. I like the idea of knowingI'm on a diet for only ONE day at a time. I think if I KNEW something special were coming up,then I wiould do two down days in a row but no two up days. That' just me being paranoid of gaining,tho....

Pati,
Dr. Johnson recommends weighing yourself once a week, after a down day. Your weight will fluctuate wildly over the course of a week, and there's no point in getting frustrated or depressed over a temporary, meaningless weight increase. But once a week should give you some idea of where your weight is going.
Dr. Johnson somewhere also says that up to 10 up days in a row will not cause you to gain weight. I personally think this would best be done after having been on JUDDDD for at least a few weeks, however. Moreover, this assumes that the up days are not excessive.
If you haven't done so already, I recommend reading the info on the website: http://www.johnsonupdaydowndaydiet.samsbiz.com/
That might give you more definitive answers to your questions.

Mike,
You could always try JUDDDD for a couple of weeks and see what happens. If you're concerned about exercising on your down days, I think most people who are exercising don't seem to notice any problems as far as being weak or tired.
Let us know how it goes if you decide to try it .

that is too low. it certainly explains how you lose weight so quickly and easily. it also explains why you gain it back. a few weeks at that level will really bring down your metabolism. JUDDDD might be a good option for you. the reason you alternate days is to stave off the bad side effects of a constant, highly restrictive, low-cal diet.
i think initially you might gain some weight, or see slowed results. but if you lose the 25-30 pounds over a year, rather than in 6 weeks, it's much more likely that you'll be able to maintain your lower weight.

Joshua, this may explain why so many who have started on JUDDDD have stopped losing at a certain point. Maybe the body gets used to the lower overall calorie intake. Based on the experiences I've seen here, I would say at least half of the JUDDDDers eventually plateau (that percentage may even be a modest one), and the plateau is long and difficult to break without some sort of tweaking. Initially, the diet is exciting, though, because you can easily lose a good amount of weight in a short period of time.
Thanks for the information.
