I got this idea from Tom Venuto's BFFM, so I decided to surf around the net for more info on calorie cycling. I have found it to be effective even w/o taking calories down to 1/4 of maintenance.

I am a man about 6' tall and weighing 321 lbs. I was about 390 when I started losing weight, but having stalled on regular calorie counting, I had to switch to low carbs....

Reply by Jackie Parmly

Welcome! The key is that you are tricking your metabolism. Let's say that prior to starting this you consumed 2000 calories a day. Your body got used to that and your metabolism burns accordingly. On any other type of diet we are encouraged to begin restricting calories and keep them restricted. It will work for awhile, but the body will soon say "hey, wait a minute! I have not been getting 2000 a day, so I need to slow down and store more because I must be starving". In fact, I find that on an UD I'm not as hungry as one would think. That was SO supportive and nice of your co-workers to take your needs into consideration. Maybe you should look at the week differently and pick 3 dd (not back to back you know you can do) . If you do two updays together that is O.K. Now that I have a lost 25 pounds and am 10 pounds from goal, I will even do 3 updays, but then I make sure I follow with dd/ud/dd/ud.

I think everybody who sticks with it for a while would say that it doesn't have any sort of negative effect on the metabolism. You're still consuming adequate calories over the course of a week to maintain body functions. You just are eating the calories in a different pattern than you're used to. Many of us would NOT recommend fruit for the down day. Carbs seem to make you feel hungry. Vegetables, on the other hand, don't have the same effect since they don't contain as much sugar. You can eat a decent amount of nonstarchy vegetables without using up all your calories, so they're a good choice for a down day.

Dr. Johnson recommends weighing yourself once a week, after a down day. Your weight will fluctuate wildly over the course of a week, and there's no point in getting frustrated or depressed over a temporary, meaningless weight increase. But once a week should give you some idea of where your weight is going.

Dr. Johnson has recommended several things. One easy one is to write things down as you eat them on up days, and review what you ate in the evening. Sometimes you do get thrown a curve, but if I HAVE to eat on a DD (Father's Day was the last example) I just take the hit, eat and continue on the next day with an UD, then get back on track the following day with my DD.

You know, the diet actually MAY slow down the metabolism. In fact, it's almost certain that it does. It is, after all, a calorie-restricted diet, and that's what tends to happen with calorie restriction. But before you get upset about that, there's something to consider: slowing down the metabolism is actually a good
