Is anyone else doing the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet? It was written in the 90's by Rachel and Richard Heller.

I am so happy to have found it. When I follow it ( blush) I get really good results. I am glad to have found it also because I realize I am not just a glutton. There were valid reasons why I ate so much, and I have been able to fix that problem.

I was just wondering if anyone else is following it.

I've never heard of it, but I should get on it! I'm actually really looking forward to lent, I plan on giving up pasta again. Last year (just on a tangent) when I gave up pasta I lost 20 lbs, along with going to the gym 3 times a week.

Anyways random tangent!

Congrats on the diet!

Natalie! You lost 20 pounds just giving up pasta?? Wow! You may want to check out this diet. It sounds like you may have the same insulin problem that is described in the book. Maybe not, but there is a quiz to help you find out. I noticed awhile before I read the book that certain foods seemed to make me gain overnight. They also caused me to eat, eat, eat.

If you like, you can check it out here:

I would watch out for the information on that link... I took the "are you addicted to carbs" quiz - and I think that many people who are not "addicted to carbs" would answer yes to almost all those questions. I'm just giving a warning because they most likely want to scare you into buying their products/advice.

I've found the books by McDougall and Fuhrman to have a more scientifically and experientially based foundation for nutritional and caloric intake advice.

In particular, Dr Fuhrman has a medical practice in Flemington, NJ, where he's seen thousands of patients over the last 10 years. I recommend either of these authors (and I'm working on reviewing Ornish as well) but I lean towards Fuhrman's book "Eat to Live". For $10-$12 (or free if you borrow it from your library) it's a very minor investment, compared to a lot of programs out there.

I highly recommend you find out for yourself -- browse Fuhrman's articles for free on DiseaseProof.com.

ETA: Low carb diets have been linked to increased risk of cancer according to the American Cancer Society. Carbs aren't bad -- it's the type of carbs you eat that matters. Even vegetarians put on weight, if they get most of their carbs from grain products (pasta, rice, bread) instead of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

I haven't bought anything... I even borrowed the book from my neighbor. I do not suggest ever buying anything. : ) So, do beware of ANY site that wants to sell something.

I will check out Dr. Fuhrman's site when I have more time. Thanks for the link.

I do just want to stress the point that this is not a low carb diet like Atkin's. I can have low carb veg ( six grams per meal) at breakfast and lunch, then anything I want during my dinner hour.

For instance, I just finished dinner. I ate a baked potato with sour cream, grapes, an apple, a Drake's coffee cake, two slices of bacon, and a half cup serving of chocolate ice cream. But now that's it. Nothing more til breakfast.

Ok. So that doesn't sound very healthy. But I just wanted to show that it isn't a typical low carb diet.

Actually that is the exact oppostie of a low carb diet.

And it probably isn't very healthy, what was the total calorie count of all those things?

Well, I didn't say it was low carb.

My calorie count for yesterday was around 1770. Something like half of that was dinner.

Yes, I have tried the Carb Addicts Diet. It was insane. I totally overdid the meal that allows you to eat what you want in 1 hour. I don't think anyone with portion control issues or a sweet tooth should even try this diet. I think the best diet is the one we learn in elementary school...follow the food pyramid, lots of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and get plenty of exercise.

I dont think id do well on this....

but the funny thing is even though before i started dieting and was/am about 50lbs overweight i never ate badly....i dont like sweet stuff and dont eat a ton of junk food/prepackaged stuff really....it took me months just to figure out why i was overweight....i finally narrowed it down to eating a diet that was 75% carbs and way too large of portions of them...

since figuring that out its been super easy to know where i need to cut back

also if you love breads/carbs like me i highly reccommend getting the Weight Watchers brand english muffins....much lower carb than reg. ones, only 100 cals and theres even 5g of protein in one! i eat one for breakfast each day and find i dont crave carbs again the rest of the day, or at least till nite time!

Carbs aren't bad.

I eat lot's of carbs right after workouts and early in the day. As the day goes on you don't need as much energy and dinner usually consists of moderate carbs, veggies, and lean meat.

One of the trainers at my old gym used to tell me, no carbs after lunch (if you workout in the morning like me).

If you workout in the afternoon, eat carbs right after your workout and in the morning, but much lower amounts after that.

this is definitely a generalization, but could help some.

Hi Tini Beana --

New here - was looking for information on carb addict diet - I had Hellers book years ago and couldn't stick because I was drinking heavily at the time. Now that I'm clean and sober I thought it might be worth a try again. I've been on weight watchers since Jan and have lost three big pounds.!! I tried Hellers' plan early last week and have lost 5 pounds. For some reason it has jumped started by weight loss AT LAST. So don't let the poo-pooers get on your case. I see nothing wrong with eating low carb buring the day then adding things like bread, pasta and maybe even dessert for evening meal. I'm still eating plenty of vegetables and fruit - even dairy and getting a completely balanced diet - whose business is it when I eat what!? Especially when it worked for me. Oh - I drink loads of water and green tea too. Just wanted to respond even though a bit late.

I'd eat a pierogie sandwich and french fries.
