I'm making some headway in my research into long-term dietary changes to reduce fat and improve health.
Of three books I've been reading through (by McDougall, Ornish, and Fuhrman) Fuhrman's has struck me as the best researched and backed-up by scientific study. It also helps that Dr. Fuhrman has a private practice in NJ where he's seen over 10,000 overweight or obese patients in the last decade. Nothing beats experience!
But don't take my word for it -- Dr. Fuhrman has an amazing blog called
DiseaseProof.com with dozens of very helpful articles.
I particularly like his
"Eating to Live on the Outside" recap, where he provides a link to 8 months worth of reviews of popular restaurants chains to show you what stuff on their menu is worth eating. Great for office-bound folk.
In case you're wondering, Dr. Fuhrman's main point is that you should replace unhealthy food with those that are high in nutrients per calorie (his Health = Nutrients / Calorie formula). There are a couple of surprises in there (for me at least) -- he doesn't like white rice or olive oil (any liquid oil actually).
What impressed me too was his account of a years-long vegan who lost 8 pounds on his plan and reduced his LDL count from 130 to 84 in just three months! This is a guy who doesn't look too bad on the oustide, but had these horrendous hidden health problems, kind of like what I'm going through.
Once I finish his book
"Eat to Live" I'll jump into the program and post results here, but you can already start by taking some tips from his blog. Great stuff!
