I asked another weight loss forum about my calorie needs (I'm 15, 5'6'', and 167lbs) and they said I shouldn't be eating 1200 (like I am) but 1700~2000. I've gotten that number before in calculators, but I don't think I could lose weight with that many calories. I've lost weight before by eating 1200.

D: I'm very confused.

I know people here said to listen to your body and all, but I want to make sure I'm not messing up my metabolism by eating 1200.

Just make sure you don't eat less than 1200. Calculators are just a guide. Do what works for you! Everybody is different.

Good luck!

well, 1200 is probably too little for you. i used to eat between 700-1100 calories for awhile and lost a ton of weight... but then i felt like shit all the time and became annorexic so i started eating again and gained it all back. 1200 is probably a little low for you and even though you might lose weight, you'll be more likely to gain it back because you will have to restrict yourself so much. you're only 15 and you have a long life of eating left. try not to obsess about it too much because i did and it snowballed into a lifelong issue. just exercise and try to make better choices, like having grilled chicken instead of a burger and stuff.

You can lose weight by eating this many calories if you have a robust outlet for them.

1200 IMHO is way to low... your starving your body, probably what your losing weight wise is muscle.

Bump your calories up to 1700-1800 and exercise. You'll eat more, feel fuller, have better nutrition (provided the food is good food and not junk) and be able to support your body's needs.

Try to consume 1 gram of Protein per 1lb so 164 x 1 = 164g of protein. It might take work but that will help you get to that goal of 1700 calories.

Gluck

So I should be eating more, okay. That's actually good, it's hard to eat 1200.

But how much should I eat?
Shouldn't I increase my calories slowly to prevent weight gain and metabolism screw-ups?

Sorry for asking so many questions.

I've read before that you want to increase it by 150 calories a day for a week at a time. So if you're at 1200, bring it up to 1350 for a week, then 1500, etc.

1200 isn't too low as long as you're eating a balanced diet and not working out like crazy. If you're only eating 1200, you shouldn't be doing things like heavy weight lifting and hours on the treadmill.

If you're doing light fitness exercising like walking, it's perfectly fine to eat 1200. You just run a risk of eating too little if you restrict your diet too much AND work out. Likewise, you're not going to lose a lot of weight by eating 1700-1800 and not working out. You might lose weight, but it will be a slooooooow process.

So make up your mind what your weight loss program is going to be. You could eat 3000 a day and lose weight if your exercise regime is heavy enough, and likewise you can lose weight at 1200 a day and do nothing but walk back and fourth from your office and doing daily chores. For most people it's going to be somewhere in the middle. A little higher calories and a little bit of a workout, but not workout overload.
