THis is more of a curiosity question than anything else, because I LOVE milk, and drink at least ½ liter every day (protein shakes)

But a lot of people here mention soy milk, and I've never really explored it's benifits. I know a lot of lactose-intolerant people use it, but are there other health-related reasons for using instead of moo-milk?

I like to alternate between moo-milk, (skim for cereals, 2% for coffee), and soy. I figure with all the studies out there praising or cursing the characteristics of both, I'm good in the between-ness.

I have never drank any other milk than the real stuff. I am kind of hesitant to try soy milk since the real thing tastes very good.

I don't want my own set of boobies so I don't drink or eat soy. I like rice milk though.

before anyone else sets up the false alarm, you would need to consume an overwhelming amount of soy milk to get enough phytoestrogens to have any effect on you man-wise.

Soy is fine, just don't down a ridiculous amount of it.

Damn, that means my potential do-it-yerself-at-home-soy-boob-job isn't gonna fly...

Oh well, smaller beeeeooooooooobs are a small price to pay for quality-self-arse-kickin'.

I was just thinking about buying some soy milk last night. I haven't decided if I am going to follow through or not.

Well, as someone who does not like the taste of cow's milk overmuch, I'll chime in anyway. I have to tell you that soymilk is fine, but don't think of it as milk! If you drink it thinking "milk" you will be extremely disappointed. You have to consider it as a totally new beverage.

It's got a lot of protein (I think a cup of the one I buy has around 9g protein), and it's generally considered low-carb.

Don't know what brands you have over there, Spyke, but I like Silk & Westsoy best. Try the Vanilla flavoured ones first, b/c the regular might put you off of the stuff for good haha...

Rice milk is also good...less protein, but generally better tasting than soy.

Almond milk is another great alternative to milk (and tastes great on cereal, if you eat that stuff...though again...doesn't taste like cow's milk at all! so be prepared)...doesn't have as much protein as soymilk, but it tastes better and is still low-carb/low-fat.

The sweetened versions generally taste better, but carry the caveat of more carbs. Most brands use evaporated cane juice instead of regular sugar, but I don't know that it makes a big difference.

I never drink the stuff straight, and just use it as a liquid in my smoothies. But then, I can't drink cow's milk straight w/o adding stuff to it to make it taste better. (mmm...maple syrup in milk!!! *sigh* I miss that...)

I drink the plain soy milk, but never solo--usually with whey, (I'm into banana-flavor now), and mostly in cereals or shakes.

I so rarely think of doing smoothies either, which is weird, 'cause I love them. I think it has more to do with using my blender, (read: cleaning it ; ), than anything else.

I tend to do them more in the hotter months--iced, which is swell as summer is just around the corner at damnDED last.

I'm going to check out this almond milk too.

But Minu, they're so easy to clean! As soon as I'm done making my smoothie, I fill it w/water halfway, add a drop of dish soap, put the lid on and BLEND!! The blender cleans itself and all I have to do is rinse it out

I love my breakfast smoothie...my day just doesn't feel right unless I start it w/a smoothie! (But ya know, it's pretty much summer year round where I live, so maybe that's part of it??)

I know you're perfectly right, Lilly, but I apperantly just have some 'tarded mental block it seems. I clean mine in seconds too...

Nah, no 'tardation w/you! Honestly, I know what you mean...I was the same way before I started doing the smoothie thing every day. "what? I have to use the blender? damn...I'll have to drag it out, then I'll have to clean the damned thing..." haha...it's all good

In my defense I at least DO keep it on the counter now, accessible and with far less excuses to avoid employing it, so bully for me!

Then I'll get some because I kind of like the taste of soy but you're coming with me if I have to get a bra fitting.

Here dude, this will help you allay your fears.

Well cited.

Anyway, I wouldn't go out and get all 250 grams from soy...but a glass of soy milk isn't going to get you into a bra anytime soon.

I was half-kidding, I had recently skimmed over the subject somewhere but I was actually vegetarian for almost an entire year (yes, it was for a girl) and I ate tons of soy (hotdogs, milk, tofu, cheese) and I never got bewbs.
