From Bally Total Fitness:
For many people, eating at night (when we're typically less active) can lead to weight gain. If you'd like to change your nighttime eating patterns, here are a few suggestions:
- Eat several small meals throughout the day; this way, you will not be ravenous in the evening.
- If your dinnertime routinely falls late in the evening, make lunch your main meal and dinner more of a light healthy "snack," such as a small sandwich or a yogurt with fruit.
- Don't eat and watch TV at the same time. If you're feeling hungry, eat in a room that has no television in it.
- Don't drink alcohol. It tends to increase appetite and diminish one's resolve to eat sensibly. (It also packs its own calories!)

point number two really wouldn't work for me, especially combined with point number one. i think instead of recommending to switch a big supper into a big lunch and little supper, make two suppers.

I have often heard of these advices. But for me, it wont woke - I tried, but I was unhappy. Also, when I eat at night ( 1 slice of bread or two) then I feel obliged NOT to eat at breakfast and hold out till dinner to make up for my night eating.
Despite (in combination with less moving) I have gained in weight tremndously: 1 year: 7 kg (49yr).
I wud love to change for the rhythm u suggest, but how can I convince my psyche this will be best, I am a bad autosuggestioner.

When I started to study while having a full-time job at the same time, I allowed my appetite and my body to do whatever they wanted as my mind was occupied with gathering knowledge. Meanwhile my body gathered fat.
One day I got on a scale and hated the result more than usual. So it's either ending up with wobbly body parts or feeling good about myself.

To break the cycle you should eat breakfast and not try to hold out until dinner. You are actually not eating when you need calories the most.
According to StrongLifts.com sleeping gets you in a catabolic state. Eating breakfast stops the muscle breakdown.
He also states that eating breakfast also helps fat loss by increasing the amount of calories you burn at rest. That does make sense when you think of body fat as emergency storage. Your body holds on to fat when you don’t eat enough calories or don’t eat enough fat.

I have been working out regularly since Sept 07. I've been here several times in the past BUT this time the change is going to last a LIFETIME!!
I am the mother of a ten year old competitive figure skater (which takes alot of my time). I work fulltime and my hubbie works away. Time is a challenge!!!
I would like to lose 20lbs by July 1.
I resolve to: Short term (by June 1, 2008): 1. Get back on track after my vacation in Cuba (April 7 - 16, 2008) 2. cardio 5x/week including trying to get back to running if my achillis tendon will ever heal! 3. weight train 3-4 x per week 4. Drink 64 oz water per day (this will be the biggest challenge!) 5. Obtain a Normal BMI (154 lb)!
Midterm Goals (by July 1, 2008): 1. Continue with short term 2. Try to increase mileage to run a 10 km race around Canada Day (July 1, 2008) 3. Try to find a 10 km race to run between June 15 - July 15, 2008 4. Obtain goal weight (currently set at 150 lb but maybe 144 lb) - BMI around 23 5. Continue weight training
Long term (By March 31, 2009): 1. To still be at this in 12 months time (the exercise and health habits not the weight loss part!) 2. To maintain a BMI of around 23! 3. To run a half marathon...if all works out...Myrtle Beach Half Marathon Feb 2009

I've actually gone to bed at night so I would be tempted. Only had to do this a couple times when the temptation has been really bad but it worked.
I used to be a night time snacker but it is one habit that I have broken in the past few months...now it is reserved for special ocassions...and there aren't too many of those. The treat has got to be really worth it!

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they haev to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.
Impossible is NOTHING.

Eating while watching tv leads to absent minded overeating for a lot of people... you just keep munching away and because it's not the primary activity that you're doing, you don't pay attention to it and don't stop yourself.
One of the best tips I can give for not eating at night is to make yourself an after dinner smoothie... you can do plain yogurt, nonfat or 1% milk, some berries and some whey powder as a base, then just throw in berries or peanut butter or something for flavor and blend it. They make a great "dessert" type drink, and because they're thick they keep you feeling full longer, plus, assuming you aren't adding bad stuff like HFCS laced syrups or liquid cocaine in, they're good for you (protein, calcium, fiber, etc.)!
According to The Abs Diet, men who drank smoothies that were blended until the yogurt had doubled in volume typically ate an average of 96 calories less than men who drank smoothies of "normal" thickness.

I am a hockey player in the UK. I like traineo because it enables me to keep on track without having to worry about too much detail and support my friends and family with their goals.
I have found that simplicity and alignment with your lifestyle is the key to eating well and exercising regularly to keep you in shape, good health and with bags of energy.
I use traineo to help maintain my sporting weight for playing to make sure I'm not eating too much of the wrong thing and also to make sure I am eating enough to have enough energy to play.
My 5 top habits:
1. The Abs Diet 2. the principles of little, often and high quality to help make healthy eating and exercising satisfying and fun treats rather than resented chores 3. drink water regularly 4. get enough sleep 5. everything in moderation, including moderation!

I second the smoothie tip. Also been on the Abs Diet and the evening smoothies are great. If I don't have time I just do a glass of milk and a piece of fruit or a couple of squares of chocolate.
I'd also second the drink water. Cravings, particularly for sweet things, is possibly a sign you've got dehydrated throughout the day.

I don't usually have a big late night snack attack. That might be because I'm eating 5, sometimes 6 meals a day. The last of which is usually shortly before bed and is generally something like a yogurt/protein powder/frozen berry or cottage cheese and same, along with handful of baby carrots or celery.
If I'm hankering for a little sweet... I've found that Licorice ALTOIDS fill the bill. Other flavors, I can eat and keep eating, but one or two of the Licorice totally satisfies a sweet craving, with almost no caloric damage. They are STRONG! If you hate licorice... then perhaps one of the other flavors might do. I just know that I have control with this one, LOL!
A tin box can last me 6th months or more easy!

Just to add something from the other end of the spectrum; for some people, (like me), eating at night is the norm and admittedly a damn good time.
When I work out, (which is usually in the mornings), I always ingest a post-exercise balanced snack, but after that, usually nothing more until the evenings when I DIG into the main caloric infusion.
This style of eating of course goes against the grain of what most people deem as, "THE way to eat", but it works great for me and I MUCH prefer it to the PITA of many wee meals throughout the day.
I also cycle calories in a very extreme way when in leaning-mode.
I've been eating like this, (mainly in the eve's), for about a year now, and for anyone curious, my metabolism is still reving well at about 2000 cals. per non-workout day. Note: said calories are of course very clean and well-balanced.
Just throwing that out there for those curious about more than one way to skin a cat as it were. One never knows what might work if there's no testing.
