Just last week I moved out into a house with some friends for the first time. Now I have inherited the joyful task of buying my own food. As I entered the local Krogers I realized that I had no idea what I should buy.

The question now arises, what food staples should we stick to in order to have a healthy but varied diet?

I bought all the usual items that I'm used to eating:
- Chicken breast
- Tuna
- Non-fat yogurt (I discovered this wonderful snack while wandering around Kroger - Only 80 calories per carton)
- Turkey

Beyond that, I'm not sure what foods would be a healthy addition to my diet. High protein foods would be welcome with my weight routine. Ideas?

sounds about like what's in my fridge, except I have a lot of fish there too (salmon steaks, mmmm!) but don't forget veggies!

Veggies...never been a big fan. Perhaps I just need to pick out random new veggies and just find some that I like.

it's a good idea - i'm eating veggies now that I NEVER thought I'd eat, mostly because I never tried them before.

I mean, asparagus? get real!
but now I can't stay away from asparagus

There are a couple threads on "how do you stock your pantry" or "what does your grocery shopping look like"... a quick search didn't turn them up, but perhaps someone remembers these better??

I looked for a while but didn't see any concise discussions. I'll have to implement some veggies/fruits into my diet the next time I go to the store. There aren't any excuses anymore. One of the guys I live with now has turned into a hardcore gym addict so that helps a lot.

Good links there Dave.

I like eggs, but aren't they high in fat as well?

Eggs are healthy for healthy people, so unless you're a heart-disease patient, then enjoy them. Half a dozen a week is just fiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. Cut the yoke-age in half and enjoy even more.

Yep! If I get through the whole 3 dozen in a week, I'll most likely have had 4-6 yolks at most... The rest are whites... I hard boil and bring to work, have omelett w/ 4-k whites and 1 yolk, throw egg whites on sandwich, etc.

Might have to start getting eggs then. I'm sure it's full of protein as well.

One other thing..... I look for the already "packed and ready to go" healthy stuff. Like the tuna/cracker lunches, and cottagecheese/fruit combos. I love the built in portion control.

I thought the cottagecheese/fruit combos were "girlee food" BUT my husband stumbled across one of mine and loved it!! ( He is a real meat and potatoes kind of guy)

Do you have a Trader Joes in your "neck of the woods"? Great place for already prepared healthy food.

I have no idea what Trader Joes is but I'll be the lookout.

why not get things you like to eat? you can incorporate anything in moderation into a healthy diet? you need to find things that work for you so that you can stick to it long term. what works for someone else, might not work for you.

i never USED to be a fruit person, but now that i've made it a point to try every fruit under the sun (well, almost) i eat fruit like theres no tomorrow. fruits are sweet and can satisfy cravings for your sweet tooth, have lots of fiber so they fill you up, are usually easy and dont need any preparation, etc etc etc. some fruits i like to stock up on are:

- bananas
- big bags of seedless grapes
- apples (theres a bajillion different kinds)
- blueberries/strawberries
- clementine (like mini oranges that are super easy to peel)
- plums/peaches/nectarines

And also don't forget:
- any prepared bags of salads
- unsalted nuts! (almonds, walnuts, etc)
- baby carrots! very tasty and easy.
