So I know that you can find any sort of opinion on the internet good or bad.. but I found an article rather a 'book'/essay about how Fiber isn't good for you and doesn't do anything for you..

Now I'm posting because I don't know what to believe anymore.. I know that you can have too much of anything but fiber not being good 'period'?

Help!!!

edit: Thought I'd add the link to the site for it. http://www.fibermenace.com/dis/transition.html

If nothing else, fiber helps to lower cholesterol. Liver bile breaks down fats in the gut and then, typically is recycled and returned to the liver. Soluble fiber absorbs available liver bile in the gut and then...ahem...you eliminate it through the...hrrm...normal process. A process that's aided by the non-soluble fiber in your diet, by the way. When there isn't enough bile available (because it's gone with the soluble fiber) the liver gets to work manufacturing more, a process which involves using cholesterol from the blood. Great! So eat your oatmeal...

Do you have a cite for this argument? I'd be interested in reading it, since fiber has been a part of our (humans) diet since we started eating.

Opinions are like... well something that everyone has :P

Especially online; the self publishing model, coupled with anonymity, makes people feel like they have to share their views, whether they're preconditioned yes men or they like to play the devil's advocate. Hell, not two years ago I read an article about how people should stop drinking water. The article was well written, the writer was very articulate but I still walked away from it laughing and comedy wasn't the authors intent.

There are a plethora of reasons why people recommend you eat fiber, so I won't go into them, but without reading this article I wouldn't lend it much credence. I'll read it tomorrow at work while I'm waiting on a build, but I highly doubt that anything motivated the author to write about it other than "Look at me! I'm cool and disagreeing with what everyone else says so I can be a noncomformist!"

Stop eating it for a week or two and see what your body has to say about that article. In a word, poop.

You could probably find someone online who says breathing is bad for you as well.

Studies have shown that breathing organisms have a 100% fatality rate. So be kind to your pet rocks -- they are destined to rule the world.

I often wish I could read Chinese or Japanese. I wonder if Eastern health and fitness experts are as divided as Western ones on such basic health issues.

As for me, I think I'll put my money on the smart doctors at Harvard and what they say about fiber, rather than some dude whose medical credentials I can't verify and who publishes a book so far outside accepted medical canon.

Specific to the author's (Konstantin Monastyrsky) arguments -- yes, fiber causes the epithelial cells in the intestines to rupture and secrete mucous. This is the natural function of those epithelial cells, which have a lifetime of 1-5 days. From "How Does Fiber Help You?":

The constant buffeting of the cells causes mild damage that increases the level of lubricating mucus. Injury at the cellular level promotes the health of the gastrointestinal tract as a whole.

it's all been said, but yes, to fiber, wtf to that guy. I'm sure you can find on the internet that the world is flat too, but I wouldn't lose sleep over either.

I agree guys And I've generally felt fine and decided that the person who wrote it was sadly misinformed.. At any rate I wanted to share this with the community to make sure I was well informed myself!

At any rate.. sometimes if I have a few too many vegetables or fiber I feel a bit bloated and gasey.. I took it that this was normal as now that I'm used to this new diet it hasn't happened much... but sometimes I feel a bit bloated, so I guess that does concern me a little bit.

Oh well thanks guys!

this can happen when you increase your fiber intake, but shouldn't happen too too much if your fiber intake is adequate and consistent.
