I've started to diet and lately I've been drinking a cup of coffee every morning. I add about 4 splenda pockets into my coffee.

Has any of you noticed any weight gain from either coffee or splenda? Are there any drawbacks to drinking coffee while dieting?

thanks, any info would be most appreciated

I have a cup of coffee every morning as well. I use two splenda/sugar twin and a little evaporated milk instead of cream. I haven't noticed any drawbacks or hinderance on my weight loss so far. As far as anyone else, I have no idea. Of course, I wouldn't drink a whole pot......

God bless!

4 packets??? Sounds like you are adding coffee to your Spenda!

Seriously, I have a cup or two in the morning, however, I drink it black. That probably sounds gross to you but if you give it a week, you may start to like it. Supposedly, there are less than 10 cals in a regular cup of coffee so that's not going to hamper weight loss.
It's all of these superlatteemochachochacappachino concoctions that get you into trouble....

The debate continues on the use of the various artificial sweeteners. The answer depends on what day of the week you research it.

I drink a pot of black coffee a day. Yes, a pot. I'm looking to cut back to maybe two cups, just because a whole pot can't be good for you. I still lose weight drinking that much coffee coupled with exercise and eating less.

i have three cups of coffee a day. i use one splenda per cup and i put a little whey protein in my coffee with half and half.
it's soo good.

coffee has been proven to be beneficial to everybody, as long as you don't drink too much. but if you really want to know, look it up on google.

i drink at least a pot of coffee a day--at least...

and i use probably an average of 6 packets of spledna per day...

the recent study they did about artificial sweeteners has been widely misinterpreted. what they did is give a control group of rats sugar and the experimental group artificial sweeteners. the experimental/artificial sweetener group ended up gaining more weight than did the control group on sugar. here's the important part though:

THEY ALLOWED BOTH GROUPS TO EAT AS MUCH AS THEY WANTED. in other words, the artificial sweetener group ended up eating more and hence, gained weight. it wasn't like the artificial sweetener was causing some weird metabolic reaction. in other words, artificial sweeteners may make you more hungry, but if you can control that, then the study proves nothing....

I love my espresso in the mornings love love love it...and I use one tablet of artificial sweetener...

I just think it is all about moderation...so long as you ain't overdoing it you will be fine

I would be worried about the caffeine. I forget where I read it, but caffeine has an indirect tie to insulin resistance in some individuals... can't remember the details...sorry.

Since I can't stand coffee it's never been an issue for me. It smells great, but it tastes horrible!

I drink maybe one cup of coffee a week, never was a big coffee drinker, but as far as the artificial sweetners, I have never heard anything positive from them, so I steer clear as much as possible. Personally, I am learning to live without refined sugars in all forms (easy as she blows!) its a learning process, but for me.. using artificial sweetners would be like teazing a drug addict with bag of sage.

Not sure about insulin resistance, but I've read that a little bit of caffeine can actually be a metabolism boost which would aid in weight loss... once again though, everything in moderation.

and that's never going to change.

Ahhhh.. how many times have I said that about certain aspects in my life!

I had to change so many things to start getting healthier and learning that Phat, wasn't beautiful. My SW was 260 pounds, and i attribute ALL of that weight gain to sugars bad carbs, and laziness. Cup of coffee, with sugar in the morning is nothing like a double quarter pounder and fries every day 7 days a week, but keeping an open mind to new and posible changes in our lives is healthy.

i was raised in the deep south. as such, I've spent my entire life eating fried chicken, french fries, sausage, bacon, cheese grits, etc. i've given those things up, except for rare occasions. and only in moderation at those times. even with the most terrible of diets, i've never exceeded 21% body fat (not that 21% is good).

my point is, i've always had a naturally strong build and relatively high metabolism. sure, i plan to drop to 10% body fat, and i know that will require discipline in the food department.

but i'm not giving up my damned coffee.

Espresso Love.

Not a pot a day, but when I have it, I cherish every golden drop.

I'm having a decaf lungo right now.

Go Nespresso.

I am also a big coffee fan. I'm a decaf drinker though due to Restless Leg Syndrome (no caffeine for me!). I have 2 splendas per cup and I average 2-3 cups a day. I've never seen drinking coffee increase my weight or hinder my weight loss.

I have read (reference unknown) that coffee is a good appetite suppressant (regular or decaf) and I often have a cup of french press in the evening after my evening snack. It works well for me.

I will have coffee at night at my favorite diner to get out of the house. I used to put two sugar and two half and half in every cup. I have cut that back to 1 and 1. Sure half and half AND sugar isn't good, but I am at the stage that with the changes I have already made it is not hurting me that much. Besides I have cut back from the pot of coffee I used to drink to 2 or 3 cups. I just don't like coffee much. I like a little coffee with my cream and sugar. I am slowly changing that!

Maybe I need to try some of these fancy coffee's and leave the can of Folgers alone!

I was in the grocery store today, and seen a can of Rockstar Coffee???? Don't they make energy drinks? Now they are mixing it with coffee? What are they trying to do to us???
