I've never read this before, I thought you might find it interesting.
There's only one sport where they actually aim to gain as much body fat as possible: Sumo Wrestling. Here is what a sumo wrestler does to get fat:
1. Skip breakfast. By depriving their bodies of food after eight hours of sleep, their metabolic rates stay low.
2. Exercise on an empty stomach. If their bodies have
no food, their metabolic thermostats are turned down even lower to conserve fuel.
3. Take a nap after eating. The Sumo secret for gaining weight is that, after eating, they sleep for at least four hours.
4. Eat late in the day. Going to bed with full stomachs means that their bodies must respond to the huge flood of nutrients with a rush of insulin, forcing their bodies to store some of it in the cells as fat instead of in the muscles and organs as nutrients.
5. Always eat with others in a social atmosphere. According to leading researchers, a meal eaten with others can be at least 44 percent larger and with 30 percent more calories and fat.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

Quoting: spaggard I always thought that exercising on an empty stomach was good.
Yeah that point is up to debate. Really, it depends on the sport you do. I don't eat three hours before any jiu-jitsu (wrestling) matches as rolling around makes me sick with a full stomach. That's kind of like what sumo guys do. Slapping bellies with another fat guy isn't as fun with chili cheese burgers in the gut.
I think it makes sense to eat a small snack before a big workout.

If it's similar to the Sumo diet, I'd have to ask what your goals are!

I think the Warrior diet works if you limit your calories. There is a lot of potential for going overboard with the warrior diet. Plus it just makes sense to me that your metabolism would go down when you don't eat all day.
I think eating smaller meals throughout the day and exercise is where it's at.

I am trying to get fit and thin so that I can stop being the 'man that keeps getting fatter' and to help get my triglyceride count down to normal levels.

The Sumo diet sounds like what I was doing before I decided I needed to lose weight. And my testimony is that it really does work if you need to gain some weight!

I just completed my second Half Ironman and hit my target of Sub 6 hours. Currently training for a Half Marathon (everything in halves) and then a tougher Half Ironman in December. I am wasting a lot of energy on these races carrying excess fat around the course. I know I would be faster if I was lighter. I have lost about 20lbs in last two years but still have maybe another 10 that could go.
