What do you do when you are suddenly hit by awful cravings for foods that are "bad" for you? I've been good for almost two weeks now (went vegan on 1/28/08), but woke up this morning wanting eggs, sausage and pancakes! I've been trying to just focus on other things and not think of the cravings, but it's not easy...Anyone have any tips? Suggestions?? Anything???

Sometimes it's good to splurge a little. Would it be so bad if you had 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, and a pancake with a little lite syrup (or cool wip! - that's my favorite pancake topping). If you deprive yourself too much, you might wind up having a moment of weakness and eating everything in the fridge. Just remember the key - MODERATION!

I'm a plant enthusiast dedicated to eating whole, fresh foods. As for exercise, I regularly participate in: swimming, water aerobics, yoga, the elliptical machine, the stair stepper, running, and weight training. I try to switch up my routine a lot so that I don't get bored. My biggest obstacle to weight loss is eating when I'm lonely or sad, but I've started keeping a list on my fridge of other things I can do to occupy my time. So far it's really been helping!
Aside from health and fitness, I was married in December 2007 and am enjoying being married and decorating our apartment. I am currently finishing my last semester as an undergraduate, and hope to begin an English MA program Fall 2009. I love reading, quilting, cooking, hiking, swimming, decorating, gardening, and striving to protect the environment. I'm also really pleased that Barack Obama is going to be our next president.
Let me know if you need a motivator! Good luck in your health and fitness efforts!

Make yourself a deliciously amazing vegan meal and remind yourself that it's not just for your health, it's for your tastebuds.

Moderation, I know...I know! That's why it's so hard, b/c I could very well give in just a little, but then what if I give in a little and it turns into a lot? *sigh* And I'm really committed to sticking out the first six wks w/the vegan thing. I think that's what's getting me. I'm very strict w/myself & very determined (i.e., stubborn). I think I'm going to hunt down a vegan pancake recipe or something! Wish me luck!
Thanks so much for the advice, btw...I appreciate it!!

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

I find the cravings do go away eventually... I will eat something healthy or go to the gym... then, on the weekend, if I've been good I might just see if I'm still craving it! I've been thinking about a huge, tasty breakfast too, and one morning I will do a big, long gym session and then go to breakfast

I drink lots of water.. Helps with the cravings... of course I visit the bathroom at work about 20x's a day but oh well...
I also allow myself to 'cheat' on occasion. Its the moderation. IF you go out to Dairy Queen for a Blizzard get the small, share it if you can. Don't buy the large...
Good luck though!

what exactly do you mean that you've been trying to focus on other things?
do you try mentally, or are you eating the other things before cravings can be an issue? getting hungry/having cravings, to me, is a sign i haven't been eating enough. as long as you keep a consistent frequency of healthy foods, it shouldn't be a problem.
eggs really aren't that bad, though. yogurt on pancakes is awesome.

Ooh! Yogurt on pancakes! Good one, Troy. I'm going to have to try that. I do like fruit on my pancakes. And Kashi waffles are delicious! I have no idea if that is Vegan or not though, but they are much better for you because they are whole grain.

On the cravings note ... I baked my husband a batch of double chocolate chip cookies today for him to take to class (his request), and wasn't tempted to eat a single one.
Hooray! I've officially broken my sugar addiction!

what i mean by focusing on other things is - trying to keep busy, not thinking about food, etc. it's a mental game...hunger definitely isn't an issue, as i eat plenty - though, i do wait UNTIL i'm hungry to eat *shrug* i think i'm just feeling "deprived" of the things i ate before...have to break that mindset...thanks again for all the advice!

I think it depends on the cravings. If I'm craving sugar or junk food, I know that's something to get over mentally. However, sometimes cravings are the body's way of telling us we're deficient in something. One example I've seen a lot of is people craving chocolate, but finding if they take magnesium supplements the cravings subside.
So...I would say just make sure you're getting the nutritional elements of your craving in your diet, which in your case looks like protein. I'm not sure, just a suggestion!

Yeah, be careful to get enough protein on a Vegan diet. A few weeks ago, I made an effort to step up the protein, and it's really helped me out - I'm not on a Vegan/vegetarian diet, but sometimes it's easier to get carbs instead of protein. With the extra protein/reduced carbs, I've been less hungry and lost more weight.

Thanks again, everyone! I took your advice re: moderation. I made myself 2 small buttermilk cornmeal pancakes (def. not vegan, but low fat and yummy!) w/some sugar free syrup & blueberries on top...it was awesome! AND I still lost weight over the weekend...hooray!!
Thanks so much for all the input and advice...y'all are wicked awesome (to mix my regional phrases ;) hehe)
p.s. got some veggie sausage patties for when THAT craving hits again

Perhaps you will consider me weak, but I'm always listening to my body and sometimes there is a reason that we get weird cravings.
Just look at what pregnant women eat to satisfy their needs??
If you just fancy it, then that is something else, however when a particular craving keeps coming up it means one of 2 things to me. Either you developed an addiction to that food when you were eating naughtily for all those previous years, in which case it is probably toxic to your system. Or that there is something in the food that you are missing out on by being super strict on yourself.

Sometimes I will eat ice. It is the same thing as drinking water except you feel like you are eating something.

Success is not a race, be patient. Success leads to success. Success is always a work in progress. Success doesn't come to you--you go to it. Success is a journey, not a destination. Focus on the process. Some people dream about success... while others wake up and work hard at it. Success is achieved and maintained by those who try-and keep trying. Everyday is a good day to SUCCEED! If at first you don't succeed-try, try again

I do not crave sweet things..but I will crave things like a piece of cheese on a rice cake, or something more substantial like lasagna..well I don't go without - I figure if I crave it, and it isn't junky then I will have it and not deprive myself...the way I make my lasagna is healthy with lean mince I mince myself and lasagna sheets I make myself and I use a low fat mozzarella...and I will have a half serve with a big salad on the size...craving satisfied!!
I find it hard when I feed the kids and it is so easy to 'taste' what they're having, or eat their left overs rather than waste it..but I don't want it on my waist lol so I drink water while I feed them or green tea....
