sometimes i get hungry around 9pm or so. i know that a person shouldn't eat a certain amount of hours before going to bed..but, is say an apple, or low fat yogurt the best thing to eat during a time like this?

Nothin to say, I'm 17 and losing fat/gaining muscle is easy with time. :)

Well, if you want to lose fat you should avoid eating 2 hours before bed. I guess it depends on your goals and what you eat. I eat before bed to avoid catabolysis (breaking down of muscle for energy). People who want to lose fat should avoid eating though, but an apple really shouldn't make too big a dent in the process.

http://anotherfatguy.wordpress.com/ I'm looking at a total weight loss of over 130 lbs (60 kg for those of you in Europe like me...), from 150 kg to 90 kg (330 lbs to 198 lbs). I'm a 36 year old man and am REALLY tired of... well being tired.
So far I've been training like a mofo, and have totally revisited my diet - so far so good, 1/3 of my goal HAS been met - YIPPEE!!
Have met some great people here, and looking forward to meeting even more here on traineo - don't be afraid to bombard me with motivation - I'll take all you can give me :)

I'm suddenly raw asparagus' biggest fan. That's what I've been eating the past few nights before bed, and I refuse to feel guilty about it!!

I tried it for the first time about 31 days ago, when I started my journey. I had remembered seeing on "the biggest loser" that whenever they opened the fridge there was asparagus in it!.
Surprised the heck out of myself when I actually LIKED it! lol

I eat it plain - it's full of flavour. I find the thinner darker ones have more flavour than the fat ones - the fat ones tend to be full of water.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

hehe... the asparagus tip... LOL...
Katie - try some low fat cottage cheese with some berries or a little bit of fruit. The casein protein takes longer for your body to metabolize so is good for supporting recovery and muscle building overnight. Or make a warm smoothie with a little protein powder, some milk, and a banana... That will also help you sleep.
From some things I've read recently, it's not necessarily important to not eat 2hrs before bed, just don't pig out on crap. It is especially good to have something before bed if you're weight training (which you should be), to support muscle growth and recovery.

I think the asparagus tip might work for me.
I will open the fridge and see the asparagus and then immediately close the fridge with a complete loss of appetite.

I'm a plant enthusiast dedicated to eating whole, fresh foods. As for exercise, I regularly participate in: swimming, water aerobics, yoga, the elliptical machine, the stair stepper, running, and weight training. I try to switch up my routine a lot so that I don't get bored. My biggest obstacle to weight loss is eating when I'm lonely or sad, but I've started keeping a list on my fridge of other things I can do to occupy my time. So far it's really been helping!
Aside from health and fitness, I was married in December 2007 and am enjoying being married and decorating our apartment. I am currently finishing my last semester as an undergraduate, and hope to begin an English MA program Fall 2009. I love reading, quilting, cooking, hiking, swimming, decorating, gardening, and striving to protect the environment. I'm also really pleased that Barack Obama is going to be our next president.
Let me know if you need a motivator! Good luck in your health and fitness efforts!

I try to eat something yummy but filling, like oatmeal. Although I generally don't eat right before bed. If you want something crunchy, dried banana chips have so few calories, and they're really good, too.

It is a complete rumor that you are not supposed to eat right before bed. Your body continues burning calories through sleep.

I have been eating oatmeal about an hour before I go to sleep for the last week. I have found myself craving something to eat, and the oatmeal has satisfied the cravings. I don't really know if this is good or bad, but it fits into my daily diet.

I tend to want to go on a rampage in the kitchen as the night progresses. I've started to go to bed earlier to avoid it. Last night I went to bed at 9...Well, I'm not tired today. I think I'm going to try a little oatmeal next time. I'm also going to pick up some asparagus and give it a try. Well, as soon as I look it up on google images to find out what it looks like.

This is a big problem for me too. I usually fall asleep watching a tv show or movie, I KNOW I'm not even hungry but after a long time of doing this my body just associates TV with "get fingerfood".
ATM I'm usually having a handful of pretzels and a salt'n'vinegar ricecake. I'm trying to ween myself off it by cutting back each night on the pretzels, so that eventually I'll just be left with the ricecake. I also try to chew each pretzel 5 times - I know that sounds weird haha, but a) it makes me eat slower and b) it forces me to actively realise that I am infact eating food out of addiction and bad habit, not necessity.

While eating before going to bed probably won't sabotage your weight-loss goals, it can disrupt your sleeping patterns since your body now has to digest that food you just ate. I'd be more worried about that then any noticeable weight gain.
