As a college student it would be unthinkable to give up drinking in the name of weight loss. As it stands, I work out at least 4 days a week and have a fairly decent diet going. But on the weekends it's unavoidable for me to have a drink or 2.

So what drink recommendations do you all have that won't kill your diet? I have a few site links that have beer/liquor charts to educate yourselves.

List of beers and their corresponding calorie info:
http://www.beer100.com/beercalories.htm

Liquor/beer listing:
http://www.barnonedrinks.com/tips/reference/calori e_counter.html

Cheers,
Chris
(I'm also looking for motivators so hit me up)

I registered just so I could answer this guy.

I suffer from the same problem dude, I love bourbon, possibly as much as I like clean and press....possibly.

Anyway, I'd be hard pressed to tell you any drink that won't kill your diet per se. I mean, alcohol is essentially sugar, which can harsh your deal pretty bad. That being said, maybe it is incentive to just work harder in the gym. I mean, I love a cocktail or twelve, particularly on the weekends. I have accepted the fact that I am probably going to accumulate an extra 1500 or so calories over the weekend in booze, and plan accordingly. It means I bust my ass extra hard every day, and for me it's worth it.

When I drink, I do it to enjoy the warm soothing feeling of Kentucky's best as I share it with my wife or friends. At this moment, when the relaxation slowly works its way up from my soul to my receding hairline, the last thing I want to think about is how many calories I am drinking.

Drink what you want man, just pay for it the next day with sweat and tears. Far more enjoyable, both days.

Not to point you in any direction, but Guinness is only 100 calories.

Thanks man. I tend to get Michelob Ultra or Bud Select (~100 calories apiece) when I want beer. Vodka shots are probably the best for you at under 80 calories. Luckily I'm not into bourbon or whiskey, even though I do live in Kentucky. I tend to start off at bars being calorie-conscious and then end up doing some jager bombs (which are terrible for you btw).

So it goes. Drink it up and enjoy life. I always go the gym the next day, even if I'm hungover.

I go for Guinness if it's an unplanned outing, but on the weekends, whatever - I'm enjoying myself and I work so hard the rest of the time so I can drink beer!

I achieved my deadlift max of 470 a while back when hungover. I think cogeners are like nanobots, healing your muscle fibers.

Bud, vodka shots, and jagerbombs. Brings me back man

I'm assuming you've all seen the "My New Haircut" video on youtube. Best part is when he's pointing around saying, "Jagerbombs".

Once I start taking vodka shots it's all downhill. Before you know it I'm downing Irish Car Bombs and all kinds of stuff since my reasoning abilities abandoned me. Ah, the good ole college days.

Guinness is only 100 calories!! Why would anyone drink a light beer (you may as well drink water) for 90 calories or so. I love Guinness.

well, Guinness has a lot less alcohol - thus it's low calories

I think a pint (the size we are most likely to be drinking), has around 200 calories... pretty reasonable...

Yes - it has to be room temperature! I started drinking it when I went to London.

Hey guys, as Dave will tell ya, I'm a big beer drinker. I even make beer. But you know what, I figure the average beer I drink is below 200 calories, so I adjust my diet accordingly if I know I'm gonna have a few. Plus you should drink better beers, and less of them, to enjoy the quality. Don't get plowed, just drink for the enjoyment of the quality beverage. Quality, not quantity...

Any way, check out the diet portion of my beer blog and check out my traineo groupl

I can't find where the 100 cals for Guinness is coming from. I've looked and it states it has 153 cals per 12 ozs. This means for a small glass, or, in th UK half a pint.

This is more calories than most of the very decent strong(ish) lager beers of Europe. Guinness is very well known for "adding on the pounds".

It's a lovely drink but too much can have a belt tightening effect, more than lager. Trust me, I used to drink Guinness, and only Guinness.

BTW Diane, in the UK we can get draft Guinness "Extra Cold" and it's VERY refreshing. It's nectar. I don't know if it's available outside the UK though.

My bad, 126 for draught 12oz, 153 for stout 12oz.

Close enough.

This all seems nitpicky though...Nearly all beers that aren't swill are between 120 and 180 calories, it seems silly to say that Guinness will pack on the pounds at 153 calories, but something thats only 110 calories is totally fine and dandy. Don't try and use the carb excuse. What's the deviation for most beers? 5 grams or so? drop in the bucket for your daily diet.

We're talking about counting 25-50 calorie increments...come on guys. It's beer, not a rice cake.

Byron, like your blog. Did you know Sierra Nevada makes an ESB? found it the other day. It was like discovering the cup of christ...only I was at Giant.

Just exercise harder the next day. There are plenty of skinny people in Germany who love their beer.

You're right here BoV.

I tend to do more cardio on the day I'm gonna be going out and the day after, just to make up for it.

I don't know if it's the same outside the UK, but the gyms here are full to bursting on a Monday night, because of people feeling guilty after the weekend drinking.

Alcohol is actually NOT sugar, but alcohol......and therefore contains 7 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram for carbs and protein or 9 calories per gram for fat.

However, it tends to be STORED in your body more like fat.

A light beer is going to have around 100 calories and a shot (1.5oz) of hard alcohol is going to have close to the same (80-100 calories).

So if you're going for the hard stuff the main thing to remember is CHOOSE YOUR MIXERS WISELY!

Club soda, diet sodas, DIET tonic water (yes, regular tonic water has plenty of calories), or even water are great mixers. My favorite drink is a Grey Goose soda with a twist of lime. Nothing better

Fruit juices and sodas can add 100's (if not 1,000+) calories in a long night of drinking (and extra calories in general are stored as fat). Also, the excess sugar mixed with alcohol can lead to worse hangovers.

Good luck and keep kicking ass!

God, what is up with this thread... Saccharides are carbon rings with some organic CHO hangers on, Alcohol is a carbon chain with some CHO hangers on.

Close enough

If your body handled them all the same, then perhaps this would be the case. While they seem molecularly close, they are worlds apart nutritionally. And, I think, that is what matters in respect to just about any thread on this site.

incredibly simplified...
Instead of:
glucose + insulin -> energy

we have:
Alcohol + ADH -> acetaldehyde
Acetaldehide + ADH -> acetic acid
acetic acid can be processed for fuel like fatty acids or amino acids

In respect to the calorie-conscious drinker, the problem last night came after wine, about 8 beers, and 3 shots - everyone was hungry and the 3am shrimp and scallop scampi was born... oops
