How long before I can work out? Is it different for everyone or should an hour or so be ok?
thanks

I am trying to get fit and thin so that I can stop being the 'man that keeps getting fatter' and to help get my triglyceride count down to normal levels.

I am curious about this as well. I have been giving myself from 30 - 45 minutes between my dinner and the beginning of my evening workout at the gym. But I have no idea if this is enough time.....

I do a lot of mountainbiking and have raced a few times and I find I cannot race well having eaten solid food at all on the morning of the race. Porridge is not too bad.
I just was wondering as we had a work, team lunch today in the spot I usually do my gym training, I thought I might take some flexi time this afternoon and do my workout then, but was concerned I might get cramps or a stitch and waste the workout time.

I think that most people would say about 30 minutes or so. You need to give your food a bit of a chance to start digesting if you want to use it as fuel.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

Go with what is comfortable. Since I workout after work, I'll generally just have a piece of fruit before I leave. If I run in the morning, it is on an empty stomach unless I'm really pushing myself, then it's maybe a small bowl of cereal.

In all seriousness, if you were following the 6-8 small meals a day instead of 3 larger sittings, it probably wouldn't matter.

Depends on what you ate. Like Dave I like to be nearer empty when training just for personal comfort.
On a regular meal i'd wait 2-3 hours personally (regular meal being brekkie, lunch or tea). And a small snack maybe an hour (like a banana or something).
No science behind that, its just how I feel. Though I think it takes around an hour to digest a sarnie. Digestion needs to be well and truly over before you train.

Hey Im 19 and a college student and I live in Texas. My biggest goal is to lose forty lbs, and to tone legs and arms. I love to lift weights, and I uh...tolerate running.:)

i like to wait a couple hours before i workout too, especially if I have just had a full meal, because then I will feel sick when I am running, and give up early, instead of pushing myself through. if its a peice of fruit or small snack, 30 mins to an hour i would say!

I need to wait a few hours, but some people don't need to wait at all.

I have started two new blogs, one to follow my running and a Quest to a Marathon at blog.262quest.com and one to follow my weight loss at blog.2big.org, please check them out.
I am an IT professional / Developer which means I sit in front of a computer most of the day. This means very little exercise and plenty of time to eat.
I decided at the first of the year that I was going to lose weight. I started by changing my eating habits and started walking.
I did so for about a month and then added some weight lifting and started to run a little bit.
I have so far lost 29 lbs in just over 3 months and would like to lose just over another 50 lbs by the end of the year.
I have started running quite a bit more and am training to run the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th (10k)
I need all the encouragement I can get because to do this I am getting up every morning during the week at 4:30 to go running. With a wife and kids this is really the only time that I can consistently do what I need to do.
I am driven, but at times get a bit discouraged because I don't have anybody to work out with or run with.
All in All, I know I can do it, I just have to remember that when I don't do so well, it is in the past and what matters is going forward.

I run in the morning, and if I run anytime before 9:00 am I will not eat anything at all in the morning, just drinks. I do this mainly because I am paranoid and have felt really sick running before after eating. The times I have run in the evening I will not run until about 3 hours after a solid meal.
As for working out, like this morning.... I went to the gym and lifted weights, no cardio. If I know that I am not doing any cardio I will eat up to about 30 min before.... but something lite, I would not eat a full meal unless it was at least 90 min.... but there is nothing scientific about this... just me This morning I ate a protein bar before going to the gym.
