My tip: Write it down.

For some reason, when I write something down, like a goal, it ends up becoming true. Of course it has to be something realistic. I still haven't won the lotto.. yet. "Note to self: Win Lotto."

My goal is to reach my ideal weight by the end of August this year. My weight loss goal is to lose 60 lbs. I've also written down how much calories I need to limit myself (~1800cal/day) and how much additional calories i need to burn off through exercise (~500cal/day). There are days when I don't always follow through, but having to write down my weight after I weigh myself every morning reminds me to keep going.

Another tip would be to set mini-goals. Even though I have my goal of losing 60 lbs by sept, my goal right now is to lose 20lb by the end of march. The next 20 by end of June.

I know it may be an obvious tip to "write it down", since this is a forum where people write down things and traineo keeps track of the numbers for you already.

But for those just lurking around or don't know where to start, I say.. write down what you want and just let it happen.

Drew

Kate, I love your advice. When I started looking at weight loss from a perspective of wanting to improve my health, have more energy, and be my best self, it's been MUCH easier to be motivated than when I hated the way I looked and just wanted to get skinny to be happy. Now I am happy and still NOT skinny, and the desire to lose weight is coming from a different place. What I'm saying is that what YOU said is totally true.

I'm new to the site and I have to tell you; I love this place! Just reading all of your tips has inspired me more.

My biggest tip to myself is be realistic. I am built a certain way and I will never have the body of Demi Moore. (I am in my 40's as well) Besides, I think it would be too much maintenance to keep it, even if I could attain it.

I use the same process as you Drew! I write it all down. Workouts, nutrition, etc. I am doing so much better actually seeing how I am doing.

Here's to success for us all!
Cyd

If you only work out/eat healthy when you feel like it, you are going to be overweight for the rest of your life.

What also worked for me was to develop an elitist taste for food. I imagine my stomach to be a small nice flat in New York. So the rent is high and space is very precious. Therefore you cannot let all the cheap junk inside.

So whenever possible spoil yourself with good quality food. Because it's more expensive you will tend to buy less, eat less and savour it more.... I mean $ 1.60 for two organic pomegranate... they better be good.

Cut the crap. Eat real food, no preservatives, chemicals, etc. Stick to mostly fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans.

I'll admit, I didn't download the report, but seeing "7 reasons why you becoming obese was inevitable" gives me the shivers!! Inevitable??? Unless it's 7 repetitions that you were lazy, I would stay the hell away from this report. Everybody can learn about proper nutrition and exercise, and if we all don't take accountability for the condition we got ourselves into, why would we every put forth the effort to change it?

And though it's partially personal taste for design, and writing, I don't like that xercise site very much! I'll spend a little more time on it tonight to see if I find it more useful, though.

My weight loss tip:

Be completely opposite from the way you have been for the last 25 years, lol. That always works for me.

Here is an example: What makes a good marriage?
1.) Commitment
2.) Passion
3.) Self Sacrifice

Apply these 3 basic rules and you can do anything -- even lose weight!

I read in an article that you needed three things to lose weight and get fit:

1. The time.
2. The money.
3. The education.

If you only have two out of the three, you can make do. If you're missing two or more, then you're out of luck.

However, if being healthy is important enough to you then you'll make the time. It may not be easy, but you'll do it if it means that much to you.

As far as education, well I never grew up with teh Intarwebs. Not even a decent public library. You kids these days are spoiled! There's no excuse for not knowing, except that you didn't care enough to go look.

And there you have two out of three! Now drop and give me twenty.

It's like that Seinfeld episode where George does the exact opposite of what he would usually do. His luck changes for the better, and things start going his way.

Dice that's the coolest way of thinking about eating that I've ever seen! That's a great tip.

Mine:

-Baby steps; healthy living doesn't just happen, it's all about starting slow and having realistic expectations.

-Exercise isn't supposed to be comfortable. If you're not pushing yourself a little but, you probably aren't really getting anywhere.

-Don't lie to yourself. Justifying a day off at the gym or eating bad food for the wrong reason can devastate your routine.

Know when you're going to slip, accept it, go for it and slip (eating a cheat meal or that milkshake) and then back on track right after...the key is to identify that you slipped, but to enjoy the slip without beating yourself up.

THEN, go to the gym tomorrow.

My tip would be to make all your food for the week in one go at the weekend and freeze them.

That's what I'm doing and it's great. I've cut the number of trips to the supermarket, so I don't have tempting snacks to view all the time and they're then so convenient. If you don't like microwaves then just put them in a pan and heat them up.

I normally make turkey or chicken done in Passata, or chopped tomatoes (or both), with onions and salt and pepper for flavour. I then freeze them. Now when I am heating one up I change the flavouring. So one day I might add curry powder, the next chilli and peppers and maybe the next Italian herbs. It makes for a good variety of healthy, low fat, low calorie food.
