-for me i dont like doing it but i know how much it helps and i need to hear myself saying it PREPARATION (ive said this before "PRIOR PREPARATION PREVENTS POOR PERFORMANCE"-not my quote-love it!!!)
(having fruits and vegetables ready and cut up, having a fully stocked healthy refrig, thinking in advance about what the day might bring, carrying water with me as well as a snack-fruit and protein bar just in case, always having extra protein ready to be eaten that is fresh....)
what helps you stay on track?

Success is not a race, be patient. Success leads to success. Success is always a work in progress. Success doesn't come to you--you go to it. Success is a journey, not a destination. Focus on the process. Some people dream about success... while others wake up and work hard at it. Success is achieved and maintained by those who try-and keep trying. Everyday is a good day to SUCCEED! If at first you don't succeed-try, try again

Definately what you mentioned, plus with kids, you just have to be organised and I also like to plan my meals in advance like the night before as I journal my progress for the day, I will try and think of things for lunches and dinners (breakfast is simple..fruit and yoghurt, sometimes a wholegrain cereal)
I also like to visual...before I get out of bed in the morning, I like to visualise my day - visualise me doing my workout and really looking forward to it

Eat a small meal every 3 - 3.5hrs, it'll stimulate your metabolism and is better than 3 big meals.
You burn 17% more calories standing up than sitting down.
Water is your best friend.

Every little bit counts...coffe cream (50), 1 tiny piece of a hershey bar (20), crystal light (10), a tiny scoop of granola (70), pretty soon what you thought was dieting was really kidding yourself. keep track of every single thing that goes in your mouth.

Since I've always eaten like crap, I have to be prepared within my frig, pantry and at work. I have to have food ready to go or ready to eat. This helps me avoid temptation and straying off.
Frig: Prepared tuna, cooked brown rice, cooked chicken from the "Bah-bee", cottage cheese, a few hard boiled eggs, hummus and a gallon of water. All my favorite healthy things that will be there when I feel like straying.
Pantry: Toasted almonds, Peanut butter, whole wheat bread, an already broken up 85% dark chocolate bar, raisins
All of these things can be thrown in a container and taken on the run to work. I also can nibble throughout the days when I'm off and home.

I agree with you, The New Me - prepare your meals in advance and take them to work to avoid eating out.
Also, eat smaller and more frequent meals, and eat them before you get hungry! Once you're hungry it's much easier to poorly. Low glycemic load carbs hold off hunger better than higher load ones and keep your insulin levels in check (which promotes fat loss), so I eat lots and lots of vegetables.

hmmm what HASN'T been mentioned.
I second the "everything counts" tip/phrase;
for instance - if you know you'll be going out on a friday night, factor in the calories from those beers you have into your daily calorie allowance.
Oh and... prepare, Prepare, PREPARE!

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

What I've really found helpful is reminding myself I can't do everything perfectly at once (and actually, there might not be a perfect way yet for me to do things!). Make an improvement immediately - start on something. When you make that a part of your life, or once you start seeing as much progress, make another! Once you start seeing diminishing returns, it's time for more improvements.... This is an ongoing process to find out what works best for you and to take as much advantage of each change as you possibly can.

Cut your food into smaller bites. Studies show that if you eat more (aka lots of smaller bites and not fewer huge bites) that you will feel way more satiated.
Oh and by the way, cutting your food into smaller bites and shoveling a bunch of smaller bites doesn't count. ;p

Time for a mini goal. I'm getting married in a little less than a month. I tried my dress on and with all of the stuff you put on underneath it, I look pretty good. So I've been using that as an excuse to eat whatever I want. Well that's gotta stop. So I'm setting myself a mini goal to get under 200 lbs before the wedding. That means about 8 pounds in 4 weeks. Totally doable. Wish me luck!

Great advice everyone! For me it's trying to stop the mindless eating. No more eating in front of the tv or the computer. I know it's a novel concept, but I try to actually eat dinner at the dinner table. Another good tip is to eat slowly. I know we've all heard it before, but it takes a while for those signals that you're full to get to your brain.

I'm a plant enthusiast dedicated to eating whole, fresh foods. As for exercise, I regularly participate in: swimming, water aerobics, yoga, the elliptical machine, the stair stepper, running, and weight training. I try to switch up my routine a lot so that I don't get bored. My biggest obstacle to weight loss is eating when I'm lonely or sad, but I've started keeping a list on my fridge of other things I can do to occupy my time. So far it's really been helping!
Aside from health and fitness, I was married in December 2007 and am enjoying being married and decorating our apartment. I am currently finishing my last semester as an undergraduate, and hope to begin an English MA program Fall 2009. I love reading, quilting, cooking, hiking, swimming, decorating, gardening, and striving to protect the environment. I'm also really pleased that Barack Obama is going to be our next president.
Let me know if you need a motivator! Good luck in your health and fitness efforts!

Thanks for all the tips! I also find that I lose weight more effectively when I'm getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night, and drinking tons of water! I bought a 1 liter bottle, and I fill it up at least twice per day to get my minimum, and more if I can.
I also find that making little bets with my husband helps me to have more self control. For example, we used to have a deal that if I didn't eat sugar at all for two weeks at a time, he'd buy me a new book of my choice (I love to read). Now, I have to go to yoga once per week, run at least once per week, and eat no sugar at all. If I succeed, we rent a movie of my choice for the weekend. If he wins, he picks the movie. Since he likes such terrible movies, the motivation is strong to win! Little things like this help me tons.

Well, some foods have sugar in them, but I don't eat sweets or anything like that. I make my own bread, pitas, and bagels at home from scratch, and so I know exactly what's in them (and there's no sugar -- just honey). I avoid foods that I know have refined sugar in them entirely. So .. yeah. I guess I don't eat any sugar.

my favorite diet tip? I would have to say is not really a tip, but a rule of life..
don't live to eat.. eat to live.

When I started to study while having a full-time job at the same time, I allowed my appetite and my body to do whatever they wanted as my mind was occupied with gathering knowledge. Meanwhile my body gathered fat.
One day I got on a scale and hated the result more than usual. So it's either ending up with wobbly body parts or feeling good about myself.
|

Also, do not starve yourself. It can throw you back a light-year if you have been resisting real hunger and suddenly give in. You will tend not to only give in to the hunger itself but to all the cravings for bad food that can supply you with fast calories.
Aside from eating on a regular basis you can trick your body by eating a little healthy snack like a tea spoon of yoghurt should you get hungry late at night. In that way you assure your body that there is no famine and it will not go on calory-save-mode.

I'm a personal trainer from New York. I love helping people get fit. I work out with a friend 4/5 times a week. Having that accountability makes all the difference in the world. Most of my time is spent on PhysicalFitnet.com - a website that I founded and am really proud of. So far its a cool exercise video library of 800 demonstrations done by other trainers also wanting to help spread the word (or video) on fitness info.

Small frequent clean meals (like 6/day every 2 1/2 - 3 hours). Keep a food log to keep you honest. Step up the cardio as much as possible (45 minutes 4-5/week). Drink lots of water (it actually helps with water retention). When I can actually get myself to do all that - it comes off quickly! Though you want to make sure also to do weight training as well to offset muscle loss from the cardio and dieting.

http://anotherfatguy.wordpress.com/ I'm looking at a total weight loss of over 130 lbs (60 kg for those of you in Europe like me...), from 150 kg to 90 kg (330 lbs to 198 lbs). I'm a 36 year old man and am REALLY tired of... well being tired.
So far I've been training like a mofo, and have totally revisited my diet - so far so good, 1/3 of my goal HAS been met - YIPPEE!!

Well, the main weight loss tip that has worked for me (down 14.7 kg since I started, so SOMETHING must be working...), and I quote:
"Stay AWAY from the Snickers bars."
Really, it works
Ok, there's a million other tips that I've gotten and I'm using, but trust me - staying away from the Snickers is the most important for me!!
