I started on a serious weight loss program in September of 2006. My starting weight was 242 pounds. I'm 5' 5" tall. My current weight is 180 pounds. I was determined to do it on my own - no paid programs, pills, etc. My goal is to be 165. As of 12/1/07 - I've met my goal of 165!. Now for 2008 I'm going to focus on maintaining. Any additional lost pounds will be a bonus.
New Year and I've decided to set a new goal. I'm striving for 145 pounds. 1/30/08 - down 5 pounds....

I've been doing some research on what a good post-workout meal should be. The common theme seems to be a combination of protein and carbs. I want to maximize the benefits of the workout by feeding my body the correct foods. Does anyone have any experience on what kinds of foods (or combinations) work well for them? For example, would eating a banana suffice? Or is eating a piece of boiled chicken better.

This is a good question and varies from person to person.
I've always favoured drinking a liquid replacement within 20 mins of training and a good solid meal about an hour after that. This isn't just for muscle building purposes but for replenishment so that I recover strongly and avoid symptoms of over training and deteriation of the body.
When I say liquid replacement, I literally chow down a protein drink with some simple carbs in. Sometimes I literally mix glucose powder in though replacing the glucose with a banana would work. The only reason I avoid solid food immediatel after training is a) I want to good nutrients in fast to activate recovery and b) I don't know if I could really stomach solids too soon after training hard.
I then plan a proper healthy meal about an hour after the drink. Then I chill out and have a long nights kip, awaking refreshed.
Of course, my plan is in line with an evening workout and is just the way I do it. Hope my answer helps.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...

I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

I tend to do pretty much the same as Dean, and it has worked well for me.
Post any weight training workout, I am mixing a protein drink before I even leave the gym. Sometimes I will add a little gatorade powder to that for the extra carbs (it may sound terrible, but chocolate protein powder w/ lemon-lime gatorade is uniquely delicious). Then, once I'm home and showered I make a more balanced meal, heavy on the protein, and start winding down for bed!

Great feedback thanks. I'm going to try the protein drink while driving home from the gym. I'm usually starving by the time I get home and probably don't make the correct food choices. I know me... if I can get past the hunger, I'm more likely to not grab the first thing I see when I get home.

I'm in a rut. I know what I want and I know how to get there. I've had relatively good success with fitness programs in the past but I always seem to give up. I lose inspiration and revert back the "usual me." I'm tired of it personally so it's no longer something I want or a goal. It is a mission that must be accomplished. My life WILL be better at that point and I want to feel good about life again.

I'll usually avoid something solid right after the gym as well. Protein shakes are good and on occasion I'll even blend in some raw oatmeal too. Doing this also helps me avoid wanting to scarf food down a few hours later. Dietary fiber (like oatmeal) quelches hunger to a certain degree and also makes your body use more energy when breaking it down. I can't explain enough how much this helped me get used to smaller portions early in my dieting.

Here I am playing some Journey on my air guitar.
I'm a 22 year old with lots of determination and discipline 6 months out of the year. Needless to say, I've fallen off the wagon again and it's about time to get back on.

my favorite post-workout meal is 25g whey, banana/apple and a 6oz salmon filet. SO satisfying.

I love to eat. Carbs is my weakness link that I always lose control in front of it.
I started running for fitness in 2007. Ever since I finished the 1st marathon (San Diego RnR 2007), I am addicted to running.
I started traineoing in Nov 2007. I have reached my goal weight in Jun 08 already. But, now, I don't care much about my weight. I care about it only if it affects my running performance.

My favorite post-workout meal is a bowl of crunch cereal with soy milk and grapefruit. I normally sit down to enjoy them. And, also think about what/how I have run. It is an enjoyable moment to me.
But, my workout is running. It is more cardio than weight training. The "requirements" or "needs" of post workout meal can be different.

http://anotherfatguy.wordpress.com/ I'm looking at a total weight loss of over 130 lbs (60 kg for those of you in Europe like me...), from 150 kg to 90 kg (330 lbs to 198 lbs). I'm a 36 year old man and am REALLY tired of... well being tired.
So far I've been training like a mofo, and have totally revisited my diet - so far so good, 1/3 of my goal HAS been met - YIPPEE!!
Have met some great people here, and looking forward to meeting even more here on traineo - don't be afraid to bombard me with motivation - I'll take all you can give me :)

Ummm, until now it's been a bottle of water and maybe an apple - but after reading everyone's answer to this thread I'm beginning to get the suspicion that I'm somewhere out in left field...

I usually just eat dinner like 30 minutes after my work out. I feel like Spyke. Maybe I'm way off.

For me it's not wanting to over eat as well as maximizing the effects of my workout. My workouts are either cardio or 1 hour and 15 min of kickboxing. I started researching this because I felt my body was "missing" some kind of nutrients after a workout. I definately re-hydrate with water during and after workouts. I'm going to give the protein shakes a try and see if I feel/see a difference.
