I'm a 42-year-old graphic designer / computer programmer / information architect / non-profit fundraiser / spiritual teacher / boardgame designer aspiring to become an ordained interfaith minister in the next couple of years in order to provide spiritual counseling.
I have a 20-year-old daughter who's brilliant, lovely, and stunningly creative. I'm currently single and dating, and I seem to be falling in love again, which is wonderful.
I've been overweight since I was 11 or 12, and have lost hundreds of pounds over the years. Two years ago I had an epiphany and at 326 pounds, my all-time high, began to take care of my body. Injuries from an auto accident delayed my continued weight loss until I managed to heal sufficiently in October of 2006. The difficulty still flares up regularly, limiting my exercise, but it's improving all the time, and I'm steadily losing weight nonetheless.
My biggest breakthrough was a couple of months ago when I realized that all of the childhood stuff that had been contributing to my body-image and eating troubles could be forgiven without need to accept or come to terms with them. Forgiveness is as basic as asking yourself if being unhappy about the situation or event is serving you now, and if not, accepting that it's no longer important and moving on.
I'm glad to have found Traineo, as the tools have helped keep me on track and the incredible people in the community have kept me inspired, informed, and ignited!

Hi gang,
I'm eating a healthy low-calorie diet, lots of fresh vegetables and some fruits, whole grains, occasional lean poultry or fish, small amount of lowfat dairy, etc.
I made this same diet change a couple of years ago and, like this time, noticed the wonderful way that the taste of food changed. Suddenly carrots were surprisingly sweet, vegetables all had lovely, unique flavors, etc.
Something new is happening this time, though, and I'm wondering if anyone's experienced it before or has heard of it. After eating anything with refined sugar in it, and even some fruits, I end up with a bitter aftertaste in my mouth that lasts 30 minutes or more. I had a bit of honey the other day and did not experience the same effect. Note, too, that I don't consume any artificial sweeteners.
So... does anyone else experience this? My google-fu is strong, but I'm not seeing it show up anywhere. Is this just common for people who have cut refined sugars and high-sugar fruits out of their diets?
Just trying to make sure I shouldn't be concerned, or that it's not a sign of missing some particular nutrient.

My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

As I've been starting to eat more fruits and vegetables, I have noticed how wonderfully sweet they begin to taste. I now have an apple as a snack, where as before I would have had a candy bar or ice cream.
I have not experience the bitter taste you are talking about (at least not yet). I can't think of what might cause that to happen, and I sure hope that I don't develop the same bitter taste.

Sounds like something is blocking your sweet taste buds - have you eaten anything that may contain sodium laureth sulphate, such as toothpaste?
Thanks

I am done being overweight. I have peaked at 319 lbs, and am absolutely ready to change. My motivation has never been higher.
I have tried to lose weight since I can remember. My biggest problem has been to reduce the amount of food I eat.
I KNOW that success is within my reach, as long as I don't slip into old habits.
Looking at all the different diet options, I have decided to try South Beach. I'm impressed by the nutritional lifestyle the diet creates.
I'm looking for motivators, so send me a message!

I noticed tonight that grape tomatoes, green and red bell peppers, and even celery have a wonderful flavor. The grape tomatoes almost seem sinful, since they taste so sweet to me. I'm on a low glycemic diet, so most of my sugar is in fruits (although I do eat sugar in products, like low-fat yogurt and small amounts of honey)
I also noticed today that the tastebuds on the tip of my tongue tingled when I ate breakfast. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the cold I just got over...I don't think it does.
Best of luck to all!
-Ben

Good question. No, nothing new, anyway. Same old toothpaste, same hair & skin care products, etc. I suspect my toothpaste does have sodium laureth sulfate (it's a fairly standard Colgate or Crest), but I've been using the same brand for months.
I can certainly try switching to a Tom's or something without it, but since nothing in that area has changed in many months (Costco multipack), it would surprise me if that was it. Thanks for the good idea. I'll check and see if I'm eating it some other way.

Amazing, isn't it? So much sweetness there, hidden all along by an avalanche of refined sweetness. Thanks for the supportive thoughts.
