Kristina,
From what I have read what you eat BEFORE your workout is not nearly as important as what you consume AFTER your workout. Picking up some tips from the weightlifting/body builders I consume measurable quantity of protein within 30min of my workout.
I prefer to workout in the morning. So my routine is consume a big glass of water right after weighing myself. Eat a small banana. Workout. Then I consume a 16oz protein shake for breakfast which roughly equals 90g of protein and 380 kcal. Following this I have noticed a HUGE difference. I might be a little stiff or tender after a tough workout but I am rarely sore for more than a day if at all. The other benefit is protein loading can help with carb cravings. This has been my experience at least.
If shakes are not your thing shop around for a good protein bar. It is very easy to over do the shakes and bars. So make sure you read the label and understand what your consuming.
