Anybody tried Quinoa (KEEN-wah)? Supposed to be a great protein grain. I read this in Men's Health but never tried it.

I enjoy pasta with it as an added fiber-boosting ingredient, but I've never tried it on its own. It's on "the list".

Give it a go and give us a full report, sir!

I've had it before and liked it, but I like all kinds of stuff like that and am not a picky eater. Quinoa isn't actually a grain but more related to spinach so it's more like eating spinach seeds than eating brown rice or something like that.

I haven't seen it in the local grocery store but I do plan to go to the natural foods store sometime soon to see if they have some. If they do, I'd probably eat a lot more of it.

Eden Foods has it available online.

love it! actually havent had it by itself-ive had it at whole foods-they make "quinoa cakes"-yummy! try them at whole foods if you have one near you-a little greasy though so you need to blot them.

I found it in Henry's Market. It is named Wild Oats Organic Quinoa. It is a product from Peru. It is in package of 397g (14oz).

I have it for dinner tonight. Cooking was very simple. 2 portion of water + 1 portion of quinoa. I cooked 1 cup of it. Boiled and then reduced to a simmer. The whole process took about 15min.

It tasted like brown rice to me. It was sweeter than brown rice though.

I compared the nutrition value with white rice, brown rice, multigrain and quinoa. I think both quinoa and multigrain win. The same serving (45g), multigrain has 2g more carb and fiber while quinoa has 1g more protein. Quinoa has 1g more fat and 10 calorie. The most surprising discovery is that quinoa has 25% of iron while multigrain has only 6%. Quinoa is the highest iron content compare to all grains or cereals that I know.

The best part is that quinoa takes only 15min to cook. Multigrains takes at least 1 hr.

We eat Quinoa regularly. It has begun to replace rice in our diets. It doesn't taste exactly like rice but it is of a similar enough consistency for me to find it as an enjoyable replacement. There are three colors that I know of (Red, Black and White). I've tried all three but cannot distinguish a flavor difference. It depends on what you are eating to which would be most visually appealing. You can buy Quinoia at Fred Meyer's if you have them also I believe we have purchased it at Safeway before. It will be in the natural food section. Other places that likely have it Trader Joes and Whole Foods. If by chance you are in Portland Oregon there is a great Vegan grocer on Stark called Food Fight which has it in bulk for real cheap. Hope this was helpful.

a recipe that i have been toying with recently. by no means is this perfected and will surely be adapted.

1.5 cups quinoa
1 can tomato paste
a can of beans. i prefer pinto or red beans
diced onions. you decide how much i would put a whole onion in because i love it.
a clove of garlic
a teaspoon or so of cumin and cayenne.
mix all together and makes a good side dish to go with tacos or black bean burgers or as a whole meal. this will make plenty for 6 people as a side.

as you can probably tell i don't really like to measure. i just cook to taste.

Trader Joe's sells Quinoa from Peru at a reasonable price.

IMO, Quinoa rice goes pretty well with fish, such as mahi-mahi. I've used it in burritos as a replacement for rice and found it to be quite tasty.

I agree with Mike, it doesn't taste exactly like rice, but it is a very healthy and tasty alternative.
