One other bad thing about diet (or any kind of) soft drinks: they are about as acidic as vinegar, which wreaks havoc on your body's pH balance. Naturally, I have no scientific evidence to back this up, it's pure heresay.

Again, Snopes to the rescue.
Choice quotes:
"Coca-Cola contains less citric acid than orange juice does, and the concentration of phosphoric acid in Coke is far too small (a mere 11 to 13 grams per gallon of syrup, or about 0.20 to 0.30 per cent of the total formula) to dissolve a steak, a tooth, or a nail overnight."
"Besides, the gastric acid in your stomach is much stronger than any of the acids in Coca-Cola, so the Coca-Cola is harmless. "
This is on the full fat of course, but I doubt there is a difference with the diet.
I love Snopes, especially because they reference their research, so you know it's verifiable.

Snopes may be right, Chris, but back in high school, when we were working on our homecoming float, one of my fellow students spilled non-water soluble paint on the gymnasium floor. By the time we noticed, the paint had dried, and there was nary a solvent in sight. One wag suggested that we spill diet coke on the paint to see if the acid in it the beverage would dissolve the paint and allow us to mop up.
It did.

Justin, You're making the right choice. Water is most def. the way to go.
I've found a happy medium when i want water but want to avoid soda.
Propel Fitness Water from gatorade. It contains Sucralose (Splenda), but also contains a small amount of sugar as to lessen the dependency on un-natural sweetener. it's a lovely balance. Only 30CAL in the 700ml/24Ounce bottle. Not a drink I'd live off, but a great sub for soda... and only $1 a bottle at wal-mart.

Eventually we'll learn everything we eat can kill us and if that doesn't a meteor will. I'm not giong to obsess about it. I like....no, make that love soda. I do make myself drink 96oz of water each day before I can have a soda, except on weekends. It's not the chemicals I'm worried about; it's the empty calories. I add Crystal Light to my water and that will probably kill me too. I got $100 that says I die a non-food related death....unless I choke on a chicken bone.

Soda or diet soda is less acidic than fruit juice. Don't sweat it.

Throughout my life, my health habits have had their ups and downs. For the past several years my unhealthy habits have "outweighed" the healthy ones. I am here to break that trend.
I am looking to transform myself into a pertson that can make healthy habits a permanent part of who I am.
On the food front, I want to change from overindulging in comfort foods to the point of discomfort to savoring every bite of "good" food.
Lately, the most exercise I get is chasing monsters around in video games. I spend the majority of my day sitting in front of a computer, either at work or at home. As much as I love computers, I would like to make other, more physical activities a part of my lifestyle. I'd like my options to be limited by my imagination and not my body.
Obviously for me this is as miuch as a psychological challenge for me as it a physical one.
It's time to enjoy the journey!

I used to drink a lot of regular soda.
I switched to diet soda to get away from all the sugar.
Now to get away from all the chemicals/carbonation in diet soda, I am drinking more plain water and also making big batches of iced tea which I store in single serv bottles.
Each batch of tea I make, I try to use a little less sugar with the intent of getting my taste buds to prefer straight tea. I've goten to the point where regular soda tastes too sweet for me. Now I just have to eliminate diet soda from my diet.
