I use fitday to track my caloric intake and I have noticed that others on here use it also. I have seen you guys talk about certain percentages for fat, carb and protein. I was just trying to keep my calories at or below 1600, but is there a certain science to it all? I do know that all calories are not created equal, but was curious how people come up with the percentages they use for the fat, carb and protein. Is this just a personal preference, or what works best for the individual, or is there actually certain peramiters to stay within?

What most nutritionists and fitness experts will recommend is a 40/30/30 split, carbs/protein/fat. With that in mind, try to get your carbs from complex carbs with log glycemic index, lots of fiber, etc, and avoid saturated and trans-saturated fats. Good sources of fat are nuts, fish, some dairy, etc.

I went into it not really caring about the macronutrient split. I had an idea that I would eventually move to a paleo/zone sort of split like Dave mentioned of 40/30/30. As luck would have it, it turns out my preferences are fairly close to that ideal. I would bet that the worst move people make is eliminating all the good fats out of their diets due to some vestigial fear of the word "fat" from the "fat-free" diet craze of the 1990's.

And I think the government's recommendation was something outrageous like 70-20-10, though they may have updated it to something like 50-30-20.

Thanks guys, this clears up alot of confusion. I thought I was getting waaayyy too many carbs but I guess I was just about right on track. I think I always hear all the "low carb" is good and stuff and freaked when I thought I was eating too many Thanks again!

Hey Guys,

How do I go about figuring the carb/protein/fat percentage exactly? Do i just add all of the carb/protein/fat grams together and then take the corresponding percentages?

Thanks!
