A friend sent me this link last week - good resource and excellent foods to eat, but I call BS on items 2-7 unless someone finds more data to support this... Oranges and carrots in particular have a lot of sugars in them and I doubt (ignorantly, of course, but I still doubt) that they could be a negative calorie food...

thoughts?

I love zucchini and eat it regularly with meals. Glad to see it's healthy (I never knew, haha).

I count apples as 50 calories, even though they're 80. I cut them insanely small, so I probably don't burn off the entire thing digesting.

I agree with Dave on the sugary items (even tomatoes).

And remember to eat these things cold - your body uses energy to bring it up to body temperature.

if you're going to start counting all these baby calories, you're most likely to miss the real ones elsewhere.

Also if you're going to do this.. then you might as well count the calories you don't burn during your workout (as in calories that you would burn normally but aren't actually workout calories, it's confusing... I know but some people get what I mean)

I mean it's good to know that eating those foods are obviously better than say.. chips or whatever but don't really use those as tools to help you, cuz you'll be dissapointed. Unless you're on a celeri diet.

Thanks for not using the cucumber as an example!

Plus certain foods, like carrots for eg. have increased glycemic indexes once cooked.

Hi All,

Thanks for the valuable feedback. I'm trying to avoid high carb fruits from this list too.

My favorite? - Number 8 !

...thinking about hiding a lettuce in my desk!

LOL

interesting article on negative food calories-see below

Is there really such a thing as "negative calorie" foods?

Your body burns calories by digesting food, just as it does by maintaining many other biological and bodily functions. This is the concept behind the idea of "negative calorie" foods. The idea that there are negative calorie foodsâ€"foods that are so low in calories that simply digesting them burns more calories than they containâ€"is a popular theory. Certain low-calorie (and often water-rich) foods like celery or cucumbers are often touted as examples of negative calorie foods, but this concept is wishful thinking. There is no such thing as a negative-calorie food.

Digesting and absorbing food uses about 10% of your total calorie intake. For someone eating 1500-1800 calories daily, for example, only 150-180 calories are expended to completely digest and absorb EVERYTHING you eat in a day.

It is great to include low calorie, high fiber, and water-rich foods in your daily diet. These foods add nutrients, bulk, and volume to your diet, but they still contain calories and should always be included in your calorie count. No food is a "free" food; eating too much of any food can cause weight gain or inhibit weight loss.

Although one would be hard-pressed to find the freak in the world who could actually eat 2-5000 calories of celery in one day.

They'd have jaws of steel for sure!
