Before this summer I never exercised and ate a lot. I started working out with my little brother when I was home for a few weeks, and after that joined a gym. I've built a lot of muscle since then, but now I want to lose some weight so that it actually shows.

Is there any diffrence between eating fresh vegetables from the produce section and eating frozen vegetables? I've been eating the steamfresh vegetables that you microwave in the bag, and they're great, but would it be any better if I was eating fresh ones?

Hi! I'm a 44 year-old slightly overweight male looking to loose 30lbs by the end of year. For me, weight loss is just one part of an overall plan for living a healthier lifestyle (as healthy a lifestyle as possible!) In addition to diet and exercise, other elements of my healthy way of life include good sleep, proper hydration, kicking the (smoking) habit, meditation, and disease management (I have rheumatoid arthritis).
I signed up at Traineo because maintaining routines has always been difficult for me. 3 years ago however, after many tries, I was finally able to maintain an exercise routine for a period of 6 months with outstanding results. I then stopped working out so I'd have more time for other things and 3 months later the RA got worse. Since then I've been unable to motivate myself back into the gym.
Well, my motivation is back, due in part to Traineo. I think having a few motivators will be a great help. Also, posting my efforts on the Internet, for the whole world to see, may help to keep me on my toes. I'm not entirely sure about that yet so I may change my profile so only Traineo members can see it.
I'm strong willed, but most of all I crave the results I achieved 3 years ago. So I'm determined, and thus far my spirits remain high. I sure am glad you stopped to read about me and great luck with your own efforts! Cheers!

That depends. As soon as you pick veggies they begin to loose nutrients (and flavor, I believe). Some frozen veggies companies (I wish I had names to give you) flash freeze their products hours after they're picked dramatically slowing down the loss of nutrients. Keep in mind some fresh veggies may take more than a week to make it to a grocery store shelf. And then how many days do you store it before consuming?
On the flip side, freezing something that doesn't need to be frozen is a waste of energy. That’s on top of the energy used to transport produce, sometimes hundreds and even thousands of miles away.
Then there’s organic produce, which I’ve heard can have as much of 5 times the nutrients of conventionally grown produce.
So, lots of food for thought.
Cheers! (I think)

I agree, jennifer! When you're tired and don't feel like cooking at all (the case for me every day after work), popping frozen veggies in the microwave is still easier, cheaper, faster, and far healthier than running through the drive-thru.

Everything I have read says that frozen and canned fruit/veggies have the same amount of nutrients as fresh. In some cases they might be better because, as Jeff West mentioned, the nutrition value starts to deteriorate once they're picked and then there's the transport and storing time etc.

Oooh, canned = So-Di-Um
Quoting: jenngetfit so sometimes convenience is worth it
The convenience of frozen is definitely hard to beat, and I use a combination of fresh and frozen myself. I am becoming more energy-aware and slowly transitioning into the whole sustainable lifestyle thing. One thing becomes immediately clear when you start living sustainability, it takes more time, and usually more effort as well. Nothing is free.

Daniel those articles were interesting, but I'm still very skeptical. Personally, I find that organic fruits taste much better than non-organic, but I also notice other things as well.
For example, if you have two bananas that are slightly green, one is organic and the other is not. The organic banana is always much firmer than the non-organic. This is just what I notice, and if the pesticides are safe, why do they cause the non-organic bananas to effectively age quicker?

I found the articles Daniel shared with us to be light-hearted at best. Not a whole lot of serious science there.

Well, until a few years ago I could pretty much eat anything I wanted to without gaining a single pound. Sadly, this was not a good thing because I would eat all kinds of junk withough giving it any thought at all. Now that I am slightly older, (26), I have finally just started to really pay attention to what and how much I eat. Better late than never, I suppose. I actually find that I really enjoy healthy foods so much more than I ever enjoyed the junk that I used to eat. My problem now is working out. I just can't seem to EVER stick to a plan or routine...which is why I'm on this site. I have high hopes and I feel really good about it this time around.

Frozen veggies do tend to have more nutrients, from what I've read. Canned veggies can be loaded with salt or sugar. Fresh is probably better if you purchase the produce at a farmers market or a local grower.
