Plan in advance you are going to say no, and then do it. Get used to saying, "No, thank you," without explanations or saying you're sorry. For people that are really pushy, I like to use, "Maybe later." We get a lot of gift candy where I work, so I'm facing this a lot right now. For the gifts, I take them into the break room where it will be devoured by the wolves I call coworkers.
At home, I never buy candy I like for the kids that come to the door. There really is candy I don't like, believe it or not! And it's not just the yucky stuff that nobody likes.
You just have to always, always keep your goal at the forefront of your mind. Do you want candy more, or do you want to lose weight/get healthy more? It's not a neat trick, but it works.

Read the labels and then decide how many calories to allocate to the candy you really love. I'm fond of candy corn myself, and I figure I can spend 50 calories a few times on 7 pieces of candy corn.
Believe it or not, 7 pieces of candy corn is as satisfying as a whole big handful. I get to bite off the sections on each piece and savor it and not feel deprived.

A few ups and downs with the weight lately. Losing those last 10 lbs again now. Revised fitness plan: -some cardio EVERY day for a month to remove the revenge of the hip fat -some weight training, some pilates -I love biking and lots of fun summer sports! That's what it's all about-good times!
I will eat healthy foods and let my body weigh what it wants to weigh. I concentrate on whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and veggies, and I will eat delicious chocolate when I want to! Guilt has been removed from my vocabulary.
The wave of passion can be an unstoppable force.

Of course I could resist if I wanted to and I'm usually so well behaved. After the local Halloween events, I plan to sit down, indulge in some Snicker bars (my fave!) and leave all guilt behind.

good stuff! I've gotten into the habit of eating a bite of a piece of candy, then throwing the remainder immediately in the garbage (if I save it for later, I WILL eat the rest). Yes, very wasteful, but my system works for me.

I have started two new blogs, one to follow my running and a Quest to a Marathon at blog.262quest.com and one to follow my weight loss at blog.2big.org, please check them out.
I am an IT professional / Developer which means I sit in front of a computer most of the day. This means very little exercise and plenty of time to eat.
I decided at the first of the year that I was going to lose weight. I started by changing my eating habits and started walking.
I did so for about a month and then added some weight lifting and started to run a little bit.
I have so far lost 29 lbs in just over 3 months and would like to lose just over another 50 lbs by the end of the year.
I have started running quite a bit more and am training to run the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th (10k)
I need all the encouragement I can get because to do this I am getting up every morning during the week at 4:30 to go running. With a wife and kids this is really the only time that I can consistently do what I need to do.
I am driven, but at times get a bit discouraged because I don't have anybody to work out with or run with.
All in All, I know I can do it, I just have to remember that when I don't do so well, it is in the past and what matters is going forward.

I really don't have to worry. I can usually do a good job of not eating it because I have my goal always in mind.
When the kids get back from the streets with bags full of candy, and the temptation gets a little bigger, they will keep me in line. I tried stealing some last year and about got my hand bit off.

Love your kids Tim!! My 14 yr old will almost cut dads hand off to if he tries to steal candy. My fix is a cinimon bear... ohh that hot gooy candy... LOL So On the day i have to go shopping i will buy just 5 pieces.. barely shows on the scale in the store and the checker usually gives me a funny look. OHH well she isnt taking off the lbs for me!! LOL I get my fix but dont have in laying around the house. The other common thing i am reading here is Calories In Calories out. If you can HONESTLY count it... and burn it off.. then enjoy your treat. If we deprive we over kill when the moment strikes.

Hi! I'm a 44 year-old slightly overweight male looking to loose 30lbs by the end of year. For me, weight loss is just one part of an overall plan for living a healthier lifestyle (as healthy a lifestyle as possible!) In addition to diet and exercise, other elements of my healthy way of life include good sleep, proper hydration, kicking the (smoking) habit, meditation, and disease management (I have rheumatoid arthritis).
I signed up at Traineo because maintaining routines has always been difficult for me. 3 years ago however, after many tries, I was finally able to maintain an exercise routine for a period of 6 months with outstanding results. I then stopped working out so I'd have more time for other things and 3 months later the RA got worse. Since then I've been unable to motivate myself back into the gym.
Well, my motivation is back, due in part to Traineo. I think having a few motivators will be a great help. Also, posting my efforts on the Internet, for the whole world to see, may help to keep me on my toes. I'm not entirely sure about that yet so I may change my profile so only Traineo members can see it.
I'm strong willed, but most of all I crave the results I achieved 3 years ago. So I'm determined, and thus far my spirits remain high. I sure am glad you stopped to read about me and great luck with your own efforts! Cheers!

Here's a psychological approach. Wear an inflatable John Candy costume and every time you chew on some sweets, give the costume one pump of air. See yourself getting bigger with each bite.
Hooooppy Hoooolloween.

Fun post Jeff,
Yet my choice wasn't there I have to go with the total kiddie variety that I wouldn't touch in a million years... nerds, laffy taffy.... that kind of stuff. Rots out their teeth, but beats getting their hands slapped if they take a snickers!!!
So I am in the " impulsive, lacks self-control, yet thinks of others" label. ( I'll just make up my own)
This year, since I am in better shape, and exercising more self control I am able to upgrade the candy a bit..... I bought a few kitkats..
snickers.... no can do

I knew there was some special reason I like Twix so much... They were made in England, which is my all-time favorite country!
If I really want a piece of candy (which, unfortunately, happens more often than not), I give myself a few minutes to think about it. I tell myself that it's either the candy or that candy's caloric value less of food that day.
If I still want the candy, I just add it into my calorie count and remind myself when I'm hungry later in the day why I can't have some more filling carrots or something: Because I'm a slave to chocolate.
I don't like to deprive myself of anything, not even candy, because it will just make me angry that I can't have it and will, in turn, cause me to eventually go crazy one day and eat way more than is good for me.
Every once in a while, it's not a bad thing to shake up the system a bit and enjoy something terribly horrid for you, but balance that by adjusting calorie intake for the rest of the day!
Also, I try to keep candy in the freezer so it's either less satisfying or takes longer to eat because it has to thaw. Kind of like freezing credit cards in blocks of ice to prevent you from using them... Hmm...

When I played a lot of rugby the coach came up with a system to counter the drinking element of the social side. He would give every pint a price and generally it would be a mile run.
His explanation was 'You can do anything you want in this world as long as you are prepared to accept the consequences'
I remember early January one year after a heavy New Years celebration having to work off about 20 miles by the next training session. It actually became a bit of fun after a while, and as our habits improved the fines became more and more fickle as we didn't drink that much, the fitter we got. What about placing a fine on each treat, a bit like what Nate suggested and then committing to paying your fine over the next week? It will make it a bit of fun, but will remove the guilt while keeping tabs on your intake. After all 'A little bit of what you fancy does you good'

Seeing as I'm 13 and still trick-or-treating, I'll be giving away the things I don't like instead of eating them anyway.
I hate nuts, so that's a lot of candy to give away.
I'll be eating plenty tonight, but my candy gets limited to one a day after that and I watch my sugar intake a little more until the candy's gone.
If I don't get my Halloween candy, at -least- in moderation, I get rather insane. Easter I can do without, though.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

|
# Posted: 31 Oct 2007 20:53
Dean that is an amazing idea! I am going to talk to my friends about that - it's hard to plan social get-togethers without adding in beer; it seems to be a part of almost everything we do... this will not only limit our intake but get us in the gym more too
